So, why was this fundraiser successful? The event was successful because we
looked back at our history and surveyed the current membership on what events
they would be willing to support this year. Donna, our President, knew this event
would be a great one to revive and saw the potential. Her vision came to a reality
on that weekend and exceeded our expectations.
So, you may ask , what is the history of the rummage sale in the JLSP? It all started
with a Thrift Shop. The Junior Service Club, the predecessor of the Junior
League of St. Petersburg, established a clothing collection and distribution center
in donated space in the telephone company building in 1927. It was called the Junior
Service Exchange. Members created this exchange because they saw the community's
lack of clothing among the unemployed.

However, it then grew to such proportions that is was renamed
the Whale of a Sale and moved to the Bayfront Center. Merchandise
was collected by donations throughout the year for the sale.
For five years, JLSP members were very proud to provide families
in our community with reasonably priced clothing and household
items while raising funds to further serve the community.
On March 4, 1931, the Junior Service Exchange became the Junior
League Thrift Shop. At the time, members had a donation quota of
$24 worth of clothing per year. Sewing circles were formed to maintain
the clothing supply. The Thrift Shop would become the JLSP's
main source of funds to donate to the community for 65 years.
With the changing demands on volunteers, rising rent, and thrift shop
competition, the Junior League of St. Petersburg voted to close the
Thrift Shop and hold an annual One Day Sale in 1996. The first One
Day Sale was held at the University of South Florida.
Now, we have added more to this history....Co-Chairs, Tiffany
Webb & Kristin Connell and the Special Events Committee thank
all members - new members, active and sustainers - for cleaning
their closets and providing
donations to the sale. We also could not have done this without
the committee members and volunteers who donated their time to
the donation drop offs and setting up & pricing the sale. Your true
dedication to the JLSP and "improving the community through the
effective action and leadership of trained volunteers" made a major
"splash" back into the community. We can't wait to do this again
next year!
