President’s Perspective
President’s Perspective
What an amazing year! As I write this, my final President's Perspective, I'm in
awe of the IMPACT we have made in our community, our League and on
each other. I'm honored to lead and represent the Junior League of St. Petersburg
as its President for the 2011 – 2012 League year. Throughout this
year, I've continually been impressed with the passion of each of our members
to contribute to our League and community. In a time when women
are pulled in so many directions, each of you has made the commitment of
time and energy to volunteer and give back.
This year was marked with much change, and change can be challenging. Our
search towards issue-based community impact shifted into high gear. Not
only did we continue the dialogue with leaders who represented the topics
about which we are most passionate, but most importantly we did this through hands-on
service in our community. This was the foundation for the Impact Challenge. When I
asked each of you to commit to serving six three-hour shifts in our community, earning
charms that would culminate in a bracelet that shouts I M P A CT, I had no idea how this
would be received. To be honest, I thought I might have been setting our sights too high.
I know now that nothing is impossible with the JLSP. You embraced the challenge wholeheartedly,
which allowed us to feel the value of our accomplishments to better guide us in
serving the needs of our community.
Another challenge this year was Fundraising. This year Special Events was tasked with
leading our League towards a Community Fundraiser. The goal was to develop fundraisers
that will provide the resources necessary to support our projects, and at the same time
serve the community. As we move towards a new long term focus area these events will
surely mirror those goals. The “Showdown on the Playground” Kickball Tournament,
Tacky Sweater Holiday Party, “Let Them Eat Cake” Tea Party and Fashion Show, and the
return of the legendary Whale of a Sale were all a huge success with our members and the
community. The always popular Jelly Bean Fling is still to come on April 7 th !
The question continues to be where the JLSP should focus its volunteers and money to
make the greatest impact in the community. Through our members' achievements this year
we're another step closer to making an educated and thoughtful decision.
Through the challenges of change there was one constant keeping us on course: our Mission.
Our members focused on the Mission to make decisions and keep us on track. Our
Mission as members of the JLSP gives us each an opportunity to be a part of something
bigger than ourselves. We enrich our own lives while enriching the lives of others. How
great is that?
Thank you for all you have done and will continue to do for the JLSP. I'm grateful that
you chose to spend your time and energy here. Your commitment is valued and you're
appreciated beyond words. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve with each of you.
With gratitude,
Donna
Habitat for Humanity
On a cold Saturday morning in January, members of the Junior
League of St Pete helped finish a trio of homes for Habitat for
Humanity. Volunteers performed trim work inside the homes
and installed landscape outside. We even had the opportunity
to work with one of the future homeowners. They were excited
to move into their home in February.
A special “Thank You” to Kahwa Coffee for their generous donation of
Community Outreac– Heart to Heart Foster Care Event
8 |CauseWay, Spring 2012
Heart to Heart Explorations Foster Care Event
by Courtney Vandenberg
The Junior League of St. Petersburg hosted foster children from Youth
and Family Alternatives, Directions for Mental Health and Lutheran Services
along with potential adoptive families at Great Explorations Children's
Museum on Saturday, February 25th. There were 25 children
that were eligible for adoption and 15 families that have completed the
adoption prep courses, home studies and are cleared to adopt a child.
Out of the 25 children there were five sibling groups and two of them
have already been deemed as finding a potential "match".
The Community Outreach Committee needed a number of volunteers
in order for this event to run smoothly and thanks to the wonderful
hearts of over 40 Junior League members we had enough. Volunteers
manned the registration table, served as group leaders for groups of
children, helped in the arts and crafts area with decorating cupcakes,
putting together art projects and providing the children and families
with yummy snacks throughout the day, and helping to facilitate station
changes.
Junior League volunteers were joined by case managers from the three
organizations, as well as foster parents who joined the children on their
journey around Great Explorations as they met with potential families
and got their passport stamped at each station.
The Community Outreach Committee received many requests for this
event to become a regular event from most of the volunteers that were
involved. It was a great way to get hands-on in the community and to
see what a difference the Junior League of St. Petersburg is making
one community activity at a time!
Thank you to all the volunteers, as this event would not have been
possible with the dedication of the fantastic women in our League.

History of the JLSP Awards
When the Roaring Twenties collided with the Great Depression, Ida
Dann, a St. Petersburg resident began to see that the citizens of St. Petersburg
had many unmet needs. As Mrs. Dann discussed her observations
with friends, the needs of the Junior Service Club were sewn.
"People simply had nothing"
said Mailande Holland Barton, who moved to St. Petersburg in 1929.
Mailande quickly became involved with her new community when she,
Mrs. Dann and several others decided to address their observations with
action.
As one of the founding members and the first president of the Junior
Service Club, Mailande Holland Barton's spirit of voluntarism and love
for the community has been deeply instilled within the Junior League of
St. Petersburg. This is evidenced by ambitious and smoothly executed
ventures that have resulted in ongoing programs and capital projects
for our city. Over the years, many women have committed to the name
and spirit of voluntarism, giving of their time and talents to make our
community a better place to live.
To honor these women, each year the League's Nominating Committee
looks for outstanding women who have contributed above and beyond
the call of duty. These awards are tributes to those who, through their
acts of giving, become an extension of the spirit of the founders of the
A Whale of a Sale Makes a Splashing Return to St. Petersburg
The JLSP legendary one day rummage sale, A Whale of a Sale, made a "splash"
on the St. Petersburg community the weekend of February 18th at the St.
Petersburg Woman's Club located at 40 Snell Isle Boulevard NE. From setting
up and pricing items to assisting guests with their purchases, the JLSP
membership pulled together as a team and celebrated the mission & history
of the Junior League.
To kick-off the weekend, a Sip & Sea Preview
Party was held for the JLSP membership and their guests on Friday, February
17th from 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm. To gain early entry at 6:30 pm, members
purchased a VIP ticket of $35 to be the first "shoppers" of the party.
Guests enjoyed a specialty cocktail, The Blue Splash, created by Tracey's
Toddies, and a JLSP swag bag (reusable shopping tote) packed with goodies
from a Bonefish Grill Koozie to the Bay Magazine
by the Tampa Bay Times. In addition, the
VIP guests were able to get first pick from all of the JLSP treasures donated
by the membership, family and friends. All Rummage Sale Items were double
the listed price.
For those that could not make the early entry, the
guests purchased a $25 ticket to enjoy a great party
and shop for great bargains. The evening was filled
with an array of "seaworthy" nibbles and lively libations. The hors d'oeuvres
were donated from the Fourth Street Shrimp Store, The Fresh Market, Bella Brava,
Publix, and Brewmasters. A cool, refreshing collection of bottled beers were
donated by J.J. Taylor capped off with wine donated by a Time for Wine. Entertainment
was provided by a DJ from Grant Hemond & Associates.
The Special Events Committee also offered Opportunity
Chance Drawings for a number of
items ranging from a Loews Don CeSar Beach
Basket with a one-night stay at the Pink Palace to
a Gift Certificate for either Sailing Lessons or a Sailboat ride for 4 guests.
The double winner of the drawings was our very own President, Donna
Mainguth, who walked away with the Don CeSar Basket and 4th Street
Shrimp Store Margarita Bucket. Way to go, Donna!
The main event, A Whale of a
Sale, opened with another big "splash" on Saturday, February
18th at 7:45 am. Hundreds of guests were wrapped around the
building waiting for their chance to gain entry and find some
treasures. The Community was excited that this event was back.
Guests rushed in and grabbed items left and right and ventured
into the long check-out line. The Special Events Committee
knew this event would service the community but didn't realize
all of the support behind it. The community wanted it back.
By Kristin Connell, Whale of a Sale Co-Chair
WOAS
CauseWay, Spring 2012|13

WOAS
So, why was this fundraiser successful? The event was successful because we
looked back at our history and surveyed the current membership on what events
they would be willing to support this year. Donna, our President, knew this event
would be a great one to revive and saw the potential. Her vision came to a reality
on that weekend and exceeded our expectations.
So, you may ask , what is the history of the rummage sale in the JLSP? It all started
with a Thrift Shop. The Junior Service Club, the predecessor of the Junior
League of St. Petersburg, established a clothing collection and distribution center
in donated space in the telephone company building in 1927. It was called the Junior
Service Exchange. Members created this exchange because they saw the community's
lack of clothing among the unemployed.
Thrift Shop/WOAS History
However, it then grew to such proportions that is was renamed
the Whale of a Sale and moved to the Bayfront Center. Merchandise
was collected by donations throughout the year for the sale.
For five years, JLSP members were very proud to provide families
in our community with reasonably priced clothing and household
items while raising funds to further serve the community.
On March 4, 1931, the Junior Service Exchange became the Junior
League Thrift Shop. At the time, members had a donation quota of
$24 worth of clothing per year. Sewing circles were formed to maintain
the clothing supply. The Thrift Shop would become the JLSP's
main source of funds to donate to the community for 65 years.
With the changing demands on volunteers, rising rent, and thrift shop
competition, the Junior League of St. Petersburg voted to close the
Thrift Shop and hold an annual One Day Sale in 1996. The first One
Day Sale was held at the University of South Florida.
Now, we have added more to this history....Co-Chairs, Tiffany
Webb & Kristin Connell and the Special Events Committee thank
all members - new members, active and sustainers - for cleaning
their closets and providing
donations to the sale. We also could not have done this without
the committee members and volunteers who donated their time to
the donation drop offs and setting up & pricing the sale. Your true
dedication to the JLSP and "improving the community through the
effective action and leadership of trained volunteers" made a major
"splash" back into the community. We can't wait to do this again
next year!
Mission Moments
Melanie Blanchard
MISSION STATEMENT OF JLSP:
The Junior League of St. Petersburg is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential
of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose
is exclusively educational and charitable.
The Junior League
of St. Petersburg has
definitely made a
positive impact on
my life. It's really
opened my eyes to
opportunities for
volunteerism that I
never knew existed.
I'm so thankful to
now know about
these volunteer opportunities,
as it's
been truly a joy to
volunteer at Care
Fair, Clothes to Kids
and other various
Community Outreach
and Kids Create
events during
my time thus far in
the League. Most
specifically, I love
working and interacting
with the kids
at many of these
events. I think they
have just as much
positive impact on
my life as our events
to do on them!
The Junior League mission...what does it mean to you? The CauseWay wants to know! Share what the
mission has meant to your experience in the League and we'll put it in the CauseWay! Email publications@jlstpete.org
What is your mission moment?
Sharing stories of the JLSP mission in action
Kara Bond
The Junior
League of St.
Petersburg is
always evolving.
When I
first joined the
Junior League as
a teacher, I was
searching for a
group of women
with similar
interests that
enjoy giving
back. Now that
I am a stay-athome
mother,
the Junior
League for me is
my outlet to
continue educating
and donating
my time to
a greater
good. I have
found a home
with the
League. As my
life continues to
evolve and
flourish, I know
that it will always
hold a
special relationship
with the
Junior League.
Karen Anthony
My friends like to ask me
what my weekend plans are
at the last minute and my
answer usually is, “I’m volunteering
at a Junior
League event, want to
come?” The next question
they ask is, “What is the
Junior League?” In my response,
I seem to unintentionally
start reciting the
League’s mission statement.
Philanthropy, volunteering
and leadership have always
been in my heart and the
Junior League of St. Petersburg
has allowed me not
only to hone my skills, but
also put me in contact
with strong, independent
women in the community
who have quickly become
my role models and mentors.
The League has also
provided opportunities for
me to personally have an
IMPACT on my community
and to see, first hand,
the impression that the
League leaves on people’s
hearts.
Katie Mulford
I see the Junior
League mission
acted out constantly.Anytime
I hear of a
member's accomplishment,
or outstanding
service, it
makes me
proud to be
associated with
such a strong
group of women.
So many of
us stick our
necks out to
help not only
the community,
but each
other. We are
truly a group
that has not
only the want
to help others,
but the
need. The mission
has also
made me realize
my own
potential, and
that I truly can
do anything I
put my mind
to.
Candy Winkler
I recently volunteered at
the Great Explorations
Match Event. This was a
function to introduce
children who are ready to
be adopted to people who
are ready to become
adoptive parents. As with
many events I have participated
in since joining the
League, I left this one
feeling like I gained more
from the experience than
I contributed. It was
moving to see how happy,
outgoing, and sweet the
children were, despite all
the heartache they have
experienced in their short
lives. It's very easy to get
caught up in the small
things we have going on
in our own lives, but
events like this always put
things back into perspective.
And like the Match
Event, so many events and
organizations the Junior
League is involved with
serve as reminders of
what's truly important in
life. The personal growth
that comes with voluntarism
strengthens our ability
to be strong leaders
and community members.
Rishaun Wilson
As I read the mission
statement, I notice
the many components
that make Junior
League such a
powerful organization.
The first
thought that comes
to mind when hearing
“power and
strength” is a strong,
muscular body (okay
in my mind). However,
our mission statement
proves that
strength and power
are not only physical,
but mental as well.
Every day we balance
several roles such as
friends, mothers,
sisters, girlfriends
(for those in the
dating phase of life),
wives, and community
volunteers. The
JLSP allows us to
learn (i.e: AJLI), teach
(i.e. NM Advisors),
and apply our skills
and talents (i.e. community
events). Our
organization allows
us to combine our
power to impact our
community. I am so
honored to belong
to the JLSP. Ladies,
continue to strive
for physical and
mental power!

Mission Moments, cont’d
Treena Hoaglan
Tiffany Weidner
Giving back to the city of St. Petersburg has been important to me since joining my first service organization,
Rojans, at St. Petersburg High School. When I came back to St. Pete after graduating from the University of
Florida I wanted to continue my service to the community. With this in mind, I obtained several association recommendations
from friends. For each organization I examined the mission statement as well as the people who
comprised the group. The Junior League’s mission statement resonated with me. It stood for who I was as a
person and who I wanted to become. After being in the Junior League for a few years, I now realize that although
I have given numerous hours to the league and community events, the league has given me much more in
return. It has provided me with great friendships with strong women who are determined to make an impact in
the community. These women have inspired me to grow as a leader as recently as the First Annual Junior League
Kickball Tournament Chair where I was able to not only lead an admirable on-site team and raise funds for the
organization but I was also able to educate the community about the great work our women are able to accomplish.
I’m looking forward to this next year and how I, along with other members, can continue to contribute to
our mission statement.
The Junior League of St. Petersburg is an organization of committed and powerful women working together to create
a better community. It also helps by supporting the development of a strong community through its members.
