3. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
ProSpec Floor Mud is a portland cement-based mortar designed
for thick setting beds under ceramic or quarry tiles. When mixed
to a dry consistency, Floor Mud allows maximum compaction
during tamping.

Shelf Life
12 months from the date of manufacture when stored in the original,
unopened container, away from moisture, under cool, dry conditions
and out of direct sunlight.
4. INSTALLATION
Preparation
• Surface must be clean, dry, hard and free from dirt, loose particles,
wax, sealers, curing compounds, grease, paint, efflorescence and
any foreign materials that will inhibit adhesion.
• Floors must be structurally sound, free of movement and
dimensionally stable.
• All installations must conform to ANSI A108.1.
• Smooth concrete surfaces must be scarified.
• Concrete surface must be brought to a saturated surface dry
(SSD) condition with clean potable water. All excess water must
be removed.
All materials should be stored at 40°F (4°C) to 80°F (27°C) 24 hours
prior to installation.
Note: It is the responsibility of the installer/applicator to ensure the suitability
of the product for its intended use.
Job Mockups
Bonsal American, Inc. requires that when its ProSpec products are
used in any application or as part of any system that includes other
manufacturers’ products, the contractor and/or design professional
shall test all the system components collectively for compatibility,
performance and long-term intended use in accordance with pertinent
and accepted industry standards prior to any construction.
Written documentation of the tests performed shall be satisfactory
to the design professional and contractor. Test results must include
the means and methods of application, products used, project-specific
conditions being addressed, and standardized tests performed
for each proposed system or variation.
Mixing
1. Use cool, clean, potable water for mixing. Always use clean
tools and mixing containers. ProSpec B-710 SBR Mortar
Additive can be used in place of water.
2. Add just enough dry mix to the liquid, approximately 2.5 - 3 qts
(2.4 L - 2.8 L) per 50 lbs (22.7 kg), to produce a dry-pack
consistency. Too much liquid will cause the mortar to have
reduced strength.
3. Mix thoroughly until lump free.
4. The consistency and workability should be such to allow
maximum compaction during tamping.
5. Bucket life is approximately one hour. Warmer temperatures
will reduce the bucket life.

Application
Apply only to surfaces that are frost free and above 40°F (4°C)
and below 100°F (38°C) within 24 hours of application and
72 hours thereafter. Installation must conform to the current
specifications in ANSI A108.5 and the TCNA Handbook for
Ceramic Tile Installations.
Floors requiring reinforcement:
• When installing mud beds requiring reinforcement, place
wire mesh reinforcement in the center of the mortar bed;
reinforcement should not butt against vertical surfaces.
• Apply a slurry bond coat and install floor mud to desired
thickness.
Shower receptors, steam rooms, and wet areas:
• When installing Floor Mud in a shower receptor, steam room
or wet areas requiring waterproof membranes, Floor Mud
must be tamped and sloped towards drain at 1/4” (6 mm)
per foot and have a waterproof membrane and flanged
drain installed prior to Floor Mud installation. Refer to TCNA
B414, TR418 and SR613. B-6000 Waterproof / Crack Isolation
Membrane on top of the cured mortar bed greatly reduces
mold and mildew growth in the shower floor.
Over wood floors:
• Install a cleavage membrane (4 mil polyethylene film or
waterproofing membrane) before placing Floor Mud.
Concrete floors without reinforcement:
• Apply Floor Mud. The addition of ProSpec B-710 SBR Mortar
Additive provides better adhesion to the existing substrate and
strength of the mortar bed.
Installation of tile with wet set method:
• Soak tile in clean, potable water until saturated and drain
excess water before setting tile. Immerse tile completely
during the soaking period. Re-soaking of tile may be
necessary if the tile exhibits drying along the edges before
setting.
• Apply a coat of white neat cement over the Floor Mud while
still fresh and workable.
• Set tile firmly on the mortar bed. Space tiles to desired
grout joint width and bring surfaces to a true level plane.
Thoroughly beat tile while the mortar bed is still workable.
Coverage under tile should be at minimum 80% interior or dry
areas and 95% exterior or wet areas.

for Ceramic Tile Installation.
Installation of tile with the dry set method:
• For installations of tile over a cured floor mud, use a ProSpec
tile setting mortar. Consult the respective product information
sheet.
Limitations
• Do not use over gypsum underlayment, hardwood, OSB,
particle board or parquet flooring.
• Do not use under moisture sensitive floor coverings.
• Do not overwater. Mix to a dry consistency.
Coverage
50 lb (22.7 kg) bag: Approximately 7 ft 2 (0.7 m 2 ) at 1” (25 mm)
thickness.

Bonsal American ® product literature in effect at the time of purchase. This warranty is for one (1) year from the date of purchase. Any
implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose is limited to the duration of this express warranty. This warranty
applies only if the product is used, in strict accord with Bonsal American published instructions. The sole and exclusive remedy under
this warranty is replacement of the defective product or refund of the purchase price, at Bonsal’s option. CONSEQUENTIAL, SPECIAL AND

WARNING
This product contains portland cement and silica sand. Avoid
contact with eyes and skin. Do not take internally. Crystalline
silica sand may cause serious lung problems. Avoid breathing
dust and wear a respirator in dusty areas. Contact with the dry
powder or wet unhardened concrete, mortar, cement or cement
mixtures can cause skin irritation, severe chemical burns or
serious eye damage. The wearing of waterproof gloves, tight
fitting safety goggles and protective clothing that prevents
the product from coming in contact with the skin is strongly
recommended. If you have to stand in wet product, wear
waterproof boots high enough to keep product from getting
inside. If working on hands and knees, wear kneepads. Indirect
contact through clothing can be as serious as direct contact.
Promptly, rinse out wet product from clothing.
CALIFORNIA PROPOSITION 65: This product contains Crystalline
Silica, Quartz and may also contain trace amounts of other
chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer,
birth defects or other reproductive harm.
KEEP OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN AND ANIMALS.
FIRST AID:
Eye Contact: Flood eyes with water for at least 15 minutes
and consult a physician immediately. DO NOT RUB EYES. Skin
Contact: Wash exposed skin area with soap and water. Consult
a physician if irritation persists. Inhalation: Remove to fresh air.
Ingestion: Immediately consult a physician.

ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISORY
Uncured or crushed cured cement is an environmental hazard, which may
adversely affect fish and wildlife. Dispose of construction debris containing
cement, including empty bags, at a permitted municipal disposal firm.
Do not use crushed concrete as a fill near an aquatic habitat.
