boundary of the Argent<strong>in</strong>e Bas<strong>in</strong>. Sedimentati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> this area is c<strong>on</strong>trolled by two ma<strong>in</strong><br />

processes: gravity-c<strong>on</strong>trolled sediment transport and str<strong>on</strong>g current circulati<strong>on</strong> (Ew<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

Le<strong>on</strong>ardi, 1971; Klaus and Ledbetter, 1988). Terrigenous <strong>in</strong>put orig<strong>in</strong>ates from the<br />

numerous fluvial tributaries al<strong>on</strong>g the coast of Argent<strong>in</strong>a and Uruguay (Iri<strong>on</strong>do, 1984;<br />

Piccolo and Perillo, 1999). The sediments are transported directly down-slope al<strong>on</strong>g the<br />

western marg<strong>in</strong> of the Argent<strong>in</strong>e Bas<strong>in</strong> by gravity-c<strong>on</strong>trolled processes (Ew<strong>in</strong>g et al., 1971;<br />

Biscay and Dasch, 1971; Klaus and Ledbetter, 1988; Sachs and Ellwood, 1988; Romero<br />

and Hensen, 2002; Hensen et al., 2003). These gravity-driven mass transports, such as<br />

debris flows and turbidity currents, are the ma<strong>in</strong> pathways of sediment supply <strong>in</strong>to the<br />

deeper bas<strong>in</strong>. The sec<strong>on</strong>d important process c<strong>on</strong>troll<strong>in</strong>g the sedimentati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> this area is<br />

the acti<strong>on</strong> of str<strong>on</strong>g currents al<strong>on</strong>g the c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ental marg<strong>in</strong>. The currents <strong>in</strong> the upper water<br />
