Software program to aid
importers / exporters
CAPE MICRO-CONTAINER
LOADING, a computer software program
designed to meet the needs of
worldwide importers and exporters,
especially those that ship bulk products
by container/trailer loads, has recently
been made available by CAPE Systems
and Consulting Services.
The Micro-Container Loading System
can be operated on personal computers,
accepts any trailer/container dimensions
and can identify alternative container/trailer
loading patterns. It can
consider any dimension of unit to be
loaded and identify block segments for
multiple-product loading. The package
will allow more units shipped per container/trailer
load and reduce distribution
costs.
For further information on the system,
New Wallenius car carrier makes maiden voyage to Barbours Cut Container Terminal
A new Wallenius Lines car and truck carrier, the M/V TRISTAN, made
its maiden voyage to the Port of Houston Authority’s Barbours Cut Container
Terminal recently. The first of four new car and truck carriers
ordered by the lines for delivery in 1985 from Swedish and Japanese
shipyards arrived at the port with a cargo of imported passenger cars
and various rolling stock, which were loaded in Gothenburg,
Bremerhaven, Antwerp and Southhampton. The cargo was discharged
at Houston and various other U.S. ports. The M/V TRISTAN then
11
, ¯
departed Houston for various Japanese ports, where approximately
6,000 cars were to be loaded for the European market. The vessel was
so named following Wallenius Lines’ tradition of naming vessels after
famous operas. Other vessels in the fleet include the CARMEN,
FIGARO, MADAM BUTTERFLY, and AIDA. The M/V TRISTAN, which is
650 feet long, was captained during the voyage by Captain Sixten
Coast Guard from page 17
tions to a central dispatch. They in turn receive reports of the
whereabour~ of other vessels in their vicinity.
"They tell us what kind of vessels they are, if they’re towing
barges and what they’re carrying, and we put it in our
computer," Tyo explained. "The computer keeps a real-time
plot of where they are. When another vessel checks into the
system, we can let him know what traffic to expect. Hopefully,
we can eliminate surprises."
The service extends all the way out to the jetties in
Galveston Bay, Tyo said.
"The channel is monitored by closed-circuit cameras between
the Turning Basin and Morgan’s Point," he said.
"From Redfish Reef on to the jetties, we’ve got radar
coverage."
The VTS is the most sophisticated surveillance system in
use today, Tyo said.’"With it, we can advise pilots of
any aid-to-navigation discrepancies, hazards in the waterway
or restrictions placed on the channel by the Captain of the
Port," he said.
Vessel participation is strictly voluntary. Almost all the
vessels on the channel use it, however. "We’ve got a better
than 99 percent participation rate," Tyo said, "which shows
that pilots recognize its value."
The system has been in use on the Houston ship channel
since 1975, and will continue to be a valuable safety tool, Tyo
said. "The big thing we’re doing is taking the surprise out of
what’s around the corner. If the pilot knows what’s there, he
can be prepared and act accordingly." []
GYI)NIA, POLAND
What’s the bottom line?
If you’re buying a high-speed dockside container handling crane,
you’re probably looking at a stack of proposals, spec sheets, and
bids. You want to make the right decision. But, what’s the bottom
line? Is it the initial purchase price?
No. The key to higher profits is equipment reliability. Less
downtime means faster turnaround, and more satisfied customers.
Your crane has to perform.
That’s why ports all over the world depend on the Paceco
Portainer ® Crane.
Ask Anybody Who Operates a Crane.
Before you make a decision about which crane to buy, talk
to the people who actually run cranes. The terminal engineers.
The operators. They’ll tell you.
Paceco Portainers are reliable. With routine maintenance,
total downtime figures of less than one percent are regularly
logged for cranes operating five, ten, or even fifteen years.
Like the Portainers at Atlantic Container Lines terminal at
Port Elizabeth, New Jersey. They’ve logged over 62,249
hours of operation, with less than 64 hours of downtime.
That’s 99.9% reliability.
And Paceco Portainers are a sound investment. Many
cranes have appreciated in value since they were purchased.
Why Gamble?
You can probably buy a cheaper crane. But, in the long run
are you really saving money?
Not if you’re facing exorbitant maintenance costs and
hard-to-get parts. Not if your customers are sitting dockside
waiting on your crane to perform. Ships make money at sea,
not sitting in port. When you think about it, the Paceco Portainer
is probably the least expensive crane you can buy.
And the best crane for your money.
There’s Only One Portainer ® Crane.
Paceco built the first high-speed dockside container crane
in 1958. It helped revolutionize the shipping industry. That
same crane is still performing admirably just like the 300
Portainers we’ve built since. So, if it’s not designed by
Paceco, it’s not a Portainer.
productivity call (601) 896-1010, Telex 589-924 or write
