SASSELLO<br />
Italy’s first orange flag<br />
Although it has a population of less than two thousand, the<br />
municipal territory of Sassello covers an area of over 100<br />
square kilometres. Its extensive woods are inhabited by roe<br />
deer, hawks and foxes, all of which can be spotted when<br />
walking, cycling or driving through the beech and pine<br />
groves. Sassello is the first Italian village to receive the<br />
Touring Club of Italy’s orange flag, a quality mark for tourist<br />
facilities and environmental standards of inland areas.<br />
A noble feudal village<br />
The centre of Sassello dates back to the seventeenth century<br />
and boasts frescoed palaces and Baroque churches.<br />
The late-Renaissance Church of the Concezione and the old<br />
Church of San Giovanni house paintings and sculptures by<br />
great Genoese artists, inclu<strong>di</strong>ng Anton Maria Maragliano.<br />
The Saracens’ Tower dominates Bastia Soprana, whilst the<br />
fifteenth-century village of Bastia Sottana preserves the<br />
ruins of a castle and the Church of Sant’Antonio.<br />

of Liguria; skiers here<br />

Mount Viso and the<br />

refuge) and wake up<br />
ready for the pistes.<br />
Sassello is the main<br />
town on majestic, wild<br />
Mount Beigua, which<br />
is protected by the<br />
Regional Natural Park<br />
of the same name.<br />
Its summit (1287 m)<br />
offers what can only<br />
be described as an<br />
immense panorama,<br />
exten<strong>di</strong>ng from Genoa<br />
to the Apuan Alps, and<br />
Corsica to the Maritime<br />
Alps, Mount Viso,<br />
Mount Rosa and the Po<br />
Valley. And the sea is<br />
right there at its foot.<br />
To the north, the<br />
mountain turns into a<br />
plateau crossed by the<br />
River Erro in a<br />
fascinating landscape<br />
of meadows, rugged<br />
rocks and cool lakes:<br />
ideal for swimming.<br />

In early summer the streets<br />
of Sassello are decked with<br />
leafy branches and flower<br />
petals for the Corpus Christi<br />
celebrations.<br />
Books, paintings<br />
and nativity scenes<br />
Sassello is one of the<br />
most important cultural<br />
spots of <strong>Savona</strong>’s inland<br />
area. Palazzo Perrando<br />
houses the library,<br />
cultural centre and<br />
museum of archaeology<br />
and local history founded<br />
by the last descendant of<br />
the Perrando family.<br />
The museum also boasts<br />
paintings by Piola and<br />
Cambiaso, a seventeenthcentury<br />
carved wooden<br />
nativity scene and a<br />
collection of ceramics.
