Page 2 Last weekend, we celebrated the birth of John the Baptizer. Such Zeal! Such single-minded dedication to one goal! I like to imagine what it must have been like as he and Jesus grew up. We have some indication that they knew each other well from John’s words at the River of Jordan. He looks up in surprise and says, “It is I who need Baptism from you, and yet you come to me!” And Jesus answers: “Leave it as it is.” and John gives in (Matthew 3:14,15). How zealous would we be in the spreading of God’s kingdom if we too, knew Jesus? That’s just it. We have the scriptures to work from and just reading his words can give us a clear picture. We have to ask ourselves if we are satisfied to listen to a Gospel on Sunday, listen to the homilist’s views on it and go about our business for the rest of the week without a thought beyond that. How do we grow in faith then? If we don’t try to get to know Jesus better, how will we help others find him? We all know people who are lost, or worse, indifferent to Christ. We have a duty to Christ to help others get to know him, to recognize his saving grace but we can’t do it if we don’t know it ourselves. She has not planted her feet anywhere as of yet, the Holy Spirit is guiding her. To live in New York has been a life-long dream of Diane’s. It is her genuine kindness and generosity that makes this very difficult to say “goodbye”. However, we must respect and support her decision. For those who have been involved with Diane and her ministry or have been touched or enlightened with knowledge in our faith, know and understand that Diane does not believe in “goodbyes”, but instead new beginnings. The Ladies Group~SIS will host a Retirement reception on Sunday, July 15, 2012 after the 11:00 a.m. Mass. We invite you to join us in this event, as it is the best time to show our gratitude to a noble, selfless soul. We want to make this wonderful occasion very special and your presence matters a lot. It doesn’t sit right with me; I really don’t think it’s any of the governments business what kind of health care the Church provides its employees. Everything the Church does has its grounding in the Bible, plain and simple, at least it should. I feel that as a citizen and a Catholic, this is just the latest attempt by our government to control everything. I see our civil liberties being eroded everyday by a government that just seems to get bigger and bigger and go deeper and deeper into debt. Every President for the last 20 years has promised “smaller” government and just the opposite always seems to happen. As citizens, we are called to do something, but let’s be honest. How many of us have the time or the wherewithal to tackle the government. We can write all the letters we want to our representatives, but unless there’s a hefty check attached I doubt if it gets much attention. They are too busy sorting through the letters and checks they get from the lobbyists. That’s where the real horsepower behind legislation is. If I sound somewhat pessimistic, I guess I am with this latest development and with this being an election year, who knows what’s coming down the pike from the Administration or the Challenger. I fear the worst given the already tense situation in the Middle East and with North Korea. We have our MCREST guests this week and I’m looking forward to meeting them and getting to know them. Each one of them has a story, a story that I want to hear. There is therapeutic value in letting someone talk. Listening is a real art that seems to have fallen by the wayside as it seems that everyone is much more interested in what they have to say than what someone else has to say, to coin a phrase, “they love the sound of their own voice.” Have you ever noticed that when you are talking or someone else is talking how often you or they are interrupted? Where did all that come from, didn’t our parents raise us better than that? Let’s all practice some listening and let’s let people finish their thoughts before responding. I know we will bend over backwards to make our guests feel welcome. Give them some good old St. Ronald hospitality. Be sure to stop in and visit. I’m sure they’d appreciate meeting you.
