6th Sunday in Ordinary Time
We welcome Fr. Ron Kurzawa this weekend
as they celebrate mass with us while Fr. Jim is
on vacation. At our 11am Mass today, we celebrate and congratulate all
The messages in today’s
readings and Gospel are hard to
swallow for some if not most people. We listen to
the words of Scripture in agreement but putting
them into practice is another story. First and foremost the
teaching of Jesus is addressed not just to his ‘chosen few’
but also “a great crowd of people”, Jews and non-Jews
alike. His teaching is for everyone not just the elite.
Today we are presented with Luke’s version of the
Beatitudes. Jesus uses three examples: those who are
poor, sad and hungry or those who suffer in mind, body
and spirit. These people make up a shocking large
proportion of the world’s population. Even though today,
we have more effective resources to solve this problem.
Jesus speaks with authority when he says these people
are blessed because in spite of their condition, God deeply
loves them. That is a message they need to hear and from
you.
We are all called to be in communion, to think as one.
One human family in God. The ‘poor’ are blessed because
in God’s Kingdom, of which the Church is a sign, their
suffering will be recognized and brought to an end.
Here in this parish we have people who ‘suffer’ and do so
in silence. While we have, in my opinion, the greatest
Vincentians (the St. Vincent DePaul-St. Ronald
Conference) we still have people who are ashamed of a
situation they find themselves in and won’t ask for help. In
my opinion, and this may get me in trouble, we have all
failed in convincing them ‘we are one big loving family’.
From Deacon Franz
I’m putting this article together prior to the Superbowl, so
here’s my prediction: Colts 27 – Saints 17. But I do have
hope with the Saints being there that there is hope for the
Lions. With the Saints being there, that makes the Lions as
the only team from the original NFL that have never been to
a Superbowl, but I do think they are on the right track. My
son and his wife and my daughter and her husband along
with their dogs will soon be invading this peaceful house to
watch the game with Arlene and I. I can’t wait, it will be fun
and something we’ve been doing for sometime. My son and
I have been watching the game together since he was a little
guy and now it’s an annual family event that I wouldn’t trade
for anything.
Luke’s depiction of Jesus in today’s Gospel emphasizes
the emptiness of riches, material possession and false
esteem. From the moment of His unrolling the scripture in
the synagogue to His Passion, Jesus is inviting His followers
to question the accepted value system of the day and really,
turn it upside down. Jesus called Peter out of his boat, but
more importantly away for his identity as a fisherman, the
one by which his family, friends, and neighbors all knew him
by and not to be forgotten the identity he had chosen for
himself. In essence, Jesus is not just calling him to follow
him, but to leave his former identity behind. The question for
all of us when Jesus comes calling will always be about what
is our current identity, what are our roots, what do others
identify us as and then ultimately, do we have the courage
and faith to change.
I’ve always thought that some of Jesus’ disciples may have
been a little better-off than others especially considering the
varied backgrounds most of them had. Most people we
consider rich in our day and time, always seem to want
more; I’ve always wondered if they consider themselves
“rich”? There are the hungry, the sick, and the poor and
Jesus says that they belong to the kingdom. Those who will
speak up for the poor, sick and hungry will belong too, but
we often do not feel them to be genuine and we and others
speak against them and give them a sense that they do not
belong to the kingdom. We are all God’s children so we all
belong to the kingdom. How we handle that citizenship is up
to each one of us.
I have a way of looking at people. I call those that seem to
have everything and flaunt it over others as the “It’s All About
Me Generation”, the key being “flaunt it over others”. They
are concerned with the here and now, they thrive on
attention and others telling them how wonderful they are;
they are not concerned with their eternal soul and the notion
of God means very little to them. Then there’s the other
citizens of the kingdom, whether rich, middle class, or facing
challenges, I call the “It’s All About Them Generation”, and
they ground their roots in the here and now and strive to
bring about a better realization of God’s kingdom on earth.
As we dip our hands in the holy water when we enter or
leave St. Ronald, we re-commit ourselves to our baptismal
vows. St Ronald (as well as every other church in every
denomination around the world) has both types: we have
members of the “It’s All About Me Generation” and the “It’s
All About Them Generation”. We are the children of a loving
and forgiving God who accepts one and all, but what position
we ultimately have in the kingdom is up to each one of us
individually. God Bless, Deacon Franz
COPIER—We recently purchased a black and white
copier for the parish, as well as a color printer. After
looking into the possibility of purchasing a color copier, it
made more sense (financially) for us to buy a black and
white one and the color printer be used to make color
copies.
REMODELING THE PARISH KITCHEN—Over the past
couple weeks, the men of the Men’s Club have been busy
remodeling the parish kitchen including tearing down
walls expanding the space, rearranging some of the cupboards,
retiling the floor, installing a drop ceiling, and
painting. As usual, the project was completed with minimal
cost and many hours of volunteer time. Thanks to
the guys for all their work.
CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS—If you are in need of a
statement showing your donations for 2009, please call
the parish office. Have a great week! Lisa
Last Friday, February 5th, Mary Van Hulle celebrated
her 99th birthday. As a parish, we celebrated with her at
mass and a small reception afterward in the hall.
God bless you Mary.

Together in Christ,
Christian Service Commission
Mentioned by McDonald (continued from p.1)
Let it be known that I understand pride and privacy. But when
one of us suffers we all suffer. For example, when you stop
coming to church because you feel bad you can’t contribute
financially because you’re out of work and can’t feed your
family, we all suffer. When you stop coming to church because
you are depressed for whatever reason and won’t share your
pain, we all suffer. When you stop coming to church because
you think you are not worthy, maybe you’ve committed some
giant scandalous sin, we all suffer. In the end, without you we
all suffer and shame on us. Please don’t abandon us, instead
give us a chance.
The fourth beatitude talks of those who are blessed that are
persecuted for their faith. How can this be? First, their reward
will be great in heaven. Second, because of their close sharing
in the pain and suffering and rejection which Jesus endured for
the sake of the Gospel. And, third because what they are doing
is right and in tradition of the great prophets, the prophets of the
old and the new.
Yes, we are all called to ‘do the right thing’, to be in
communion, the Body of Christ.
As one Christian writer once said: “Jesus promised his
disciples three things: that they would be completely fearless,
absurdly happy and in constant trouble.” Sounds good to me!
Happy Valentines Day!
St. Valentine's Day, as we know
it today, contains vestiges of both
Christian and ancient Roman
tradition. So, who was Saint
Valentine and how did he become
associated with this ancient rite?
Today, the Catholic Church
recognizes at least three different
saints named Valentine or
Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.
One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who
served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor
Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers
than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage
for young men — his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine,
realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and
continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.
When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius
ordered that he be put to death.
Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed
for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman
prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.
According to another legend, Valentine actually sent the
first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is
believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who
may have been his jailor's daughter — who visited him during
his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he
wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an
expression that is still in use today. Although the truth
behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly
emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most
importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the
Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints
in England and France.
The above information is an adaptation from
www.history.com/content/valentine/history-of-valentine-s-day.
Reminders:
The Religious Formation Office is open this week, but
there are no classes scheduled on Tuesday, February 16,
due to Winter Break. We hope you enjoy your time off!
Preschool and Kindergarten are also scheduled off this
week and next (February 14 and 21) due to Winter Break.
We actually had a snow day last week. In order to inform
everyone, we called all the catechists and asked them to
call their class lists, emailed all staff and parents that we
had email addresses for, put it on our website, Facebook
and twitter, and I called WWJ News radio and asked that it
be announced.
We decided to cancel classes because there was a “Snow
Warning” issued by the Weather Service. I was in contact
with Fraser Schools and they were not canceling evening
activities, but because it was a warning from the weather
service, we felt it best to cancel. I am sorry for any
inconvenience this may have caused, and I hope you made
lots of snow angels instead!
Call me at 586-792-1276. If I am not here, please leave a
message at extension #226 and I will call you back. You can
also email me at amastindre@stronald.com. I am always
happy to speak with you.
It really is a beautiful interpretation, and it brings a tear to the
eyes of many. The practice schedule will be available soon.
Many roles are needed to make this a success. Anyone from
5 th – 12 th grade is welcome, and strongly encouraged, to be a
part of this. No matter what your comfort level is with being in
front of a crowd, from the shy to the public speakers, we have
