A comprehensive overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> anatomical and physiological<br />

changes that occur in <strong>the</strong> eye as we age. Each participant will gain<br />

a better understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> aging process and how it affects <strong>the</strong><br />

human eye.<br />

Conflicts-Avoiding Them, Resolving Them (1 hr) - Joy<br />

Gibb, ABOC<br />

Most people don’t like conflict and will usually avoid it at all costs.<br />

But when dealing with <strong>the</strong> public, chances are pretty good <strong>the</strong>re<br />

are going to be conflicts. This course will explain techniques to<br />

avoid conflicts and explore ways to diffuse conflicts once <strong>the</strong>y’ve<br />

occurred.<br />

New Transitions® Vantage Lenses with Variable<br />

Polarization (1 hr) - Jill Luebbert, CPOT, ABOC<br />

This course will introduce Transitions® Vantage lenses – <strong>the</strong> new<br />

adaptive lenses from Transitions Optical that are designed to both<br />

darken and polarize upon UV exposure to deliver noticeably crisper,<br />

sharper vision, even in <strong>the</strong> brightest outdoor glare. Through <strong>the</strong><br />

course, <strong>the</strong> audience will learn how Transitions ®Vantage lenses<br />

not only adapt to changing light but also increase polarization as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y darken, optimizing <strong>the</strong> angle at which light reaches <strong>the</strong> eyes to<br />

help control glare and light scatter. The course reviews traditional<br />

polarization and photochromic technology and details <strong>the</strong> new<br />

technology which enables Transitions® Vantage lenses, how <strong>the</strong>y<br />

work and who <strong>the</strong>y are for.<br />

Tips for Building a Successful Sunwear (1 hr) - Joy Gibb<br />

Have you ever wondered how to increase sunglass sales in your<br />

practice, both prescription and non-prescription alike? This course<br />

will guide eye care pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in recommending sunwear at all<br />

points <strong>of</strong> encounter with <strong>the</strong> patient. It will also suggest ways to<br />

develop a marketing plan specific to sunwear sales.<br />

What <strong>the</strong> Doctor Sees: It’s not Rocket Science (2 hrs) -<br />

Joseph Shetler, OD<br />

This course reviews common cases <strong>of</strong> ocular disease that are<br />

routinely seen in <strong>the</strong> optometric <strong>of</strong>fice. It gives <strong>the</strong> para <strong>the</strong><br />

opportunity to see what <strong>the</strong> doctor sees from <strong>the</strong> slit lamp<br />

perspective and <strong>the</strong> retinal perspective. Common diseases are<br />

identified and treatment as well as standard <strong>of</strong> care are discussed.<br />

Ocular Anatomy via Cow Eye Dissection (2 hrs) - Krystle<br />

Kennedy, OD<br />

Attendance limited to 25 participants - This course allows <strong>the</strong> participant<br />

<strong>the</strong> opportunity to have a hands-on look at eyeball anatomy through<br />

dissection. Small groups <strong>of</strong> participants will each have an eyeball at<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir table and be able to have hands-on instruction.<br />

Pediatric Pearls (1 hr) - Jeremy Baumfalk, OD<br />

Successful examination <strong>of</strong> pediatric patients requires practice, patience,<br />

and persistence. Attendees will discover new strategies and techniques<br />

to enhance delivery <strong>of</strong> eye care to this unique patient population.<br />

Chairside skills will be emphasized along with clinical pearls that will<br />

aid <strong>the</strong> technician in future pediatric patient encounters.<br />

Low Cost, High Return Marketing & Merchandising (1 hr)<br />

When structuring <strong>the</strong>ir budgets, many business owners might<br />

consider <strong>the</strong> category <strong>of</strong> merchandising and marketing as frivolous<br />

and expendable expenses. But merchandising should be considered<br />

a critical element <strong>of</strong> effective retailing, and history has shown that<br />

companies who continue to market during economic slow times are<br />

usually those that emerge first when <strong>the</strong> tide turns. This course will<br />

help attendees make wise and effective marketing choices without<br />

breaking <strong>the</strong> bank, as well as explore <strong>the</strong> basic rules <strong>of</strong> creating displays<br />

to create eye appeal and evoke a desire to purchase, and how to<br />

merchandise products and services without spending a fortune.<br />

Quite <strong>of</strong>ten, <strong>the</strong> service experienced in your <strong>of</strong>fice is what keeps a<br />

patient coming back to your practice. This course is designed to help<br />

practice staffs <strong>of</strong>fer better customer service, which will in turn create a<br />

more loyal customer. Attendees will learn fourteen service behaviors<br />

that when implemented will create a pleasant environment for patients<br />

and staff alike.<br />
