PRESIDENT’S LETTER _______________________________________
Dear AGAP Member,
Composing this first Newsletter for 2012, we
look back on 2011 as a year full of challenges
and hope for new beginnings. We are grateful
for and encouraged by the feedback from those
among you who shared their opinions with us.
AGAP Forum 2012 The Forum program committee,
headed by Josephine Evetts-Secker, has
gathered colleagues from far and wide to exchange
on the topic of psyche and time. Aptly
enough, we will have the rare chance to see a
demonstration of the original psychogalvonometer
that Jung used in his early word association
experiments at Burghölzi. Also in the spirit of
experiment: this Forum will, for the first time,
invite students of ISAPZURICH and the CGJI ZH
to attend the Forum lectures and special events,
such as the performance of Scenes from the
Red Book. Please see details in pages to come.
ISAPZURCH At ISAP’s annual March assembly,
Murray Stein stepped down after four years of
inspired presidency that transformed ISAP’s
solid local basis into a broad international vision.
With great thanks to Murray, we look forward
to working with the new ISAP Council,
headed by Isabelle Meier and Marco Della Chiesa,
the newly elected co-presidents. For a
complete update on ISAP’s committee members
go to www.isapzurich.com > Organization.
CGJI-ZH Representatives of the Institute will
soon join with representatives of ISAPZURICH
and AGAP at large to propose training standards
that should function as the basis for AGAP
membership. We will keep you updated about
the developments.
IAAP The IAAP Executive Committee met in
Copenhagen on February 10-14, 2012. Joe
Cambray, IAAP President, will soon report on
the significant events and decisions of that
meeting. As AGAP’s representative to the IAAP
EC, John Desteian was present at the meeting
and found many signs about which we can be
cautiously optimistic. Leaving it to Joe to cover
the topic more fully in his forthcoming letter to
the Society presidents and Individual Members,
John reports here only in general terms:
1) The IAAP EC approved changes to the proposed
revisions of the Constitution, and I believe
now AGAP can support the revisions.
2) The IAAP EC heard the concerns of many
AGAP members and members from other Socie-
ties and plans for an expanded Council of Societies
Meeting in Zurich, 2013. Additionally, will
be set aside at the Copenhagen Congress for
discussion of the concerns raised in the online
forum. I am personally gratified by the openness
and concern for transparency, which extends
as follows:
3) The financial statements will again be published
online. As one of two internal auditors, I
inspected the financial statements and expenditures
of the IAAP for the past year. I can report
without hesitation that the financial state of the
IAAP is solid, the EC has taken care to live
within its means, and that actual expenses were
less than budgeted.
4) Cautious optimism indicates that, in the foreseeable
future, the setting of requirements and
the recruitment of personnel for the Router
Training and Developing Groups will expand
further beyond the IAAP EC.
5) The EC is committed to the goal of translating
presidential and other important communications
into the five official languages. Insofar
as possible, the translations will be done by
IAAP members, who will receive a small honorarium
for their efforts. This is a significant and
welcome move to make communications more
accessible to all.
6) The Copenhagen organizing committee
brainstormed the problem of the extraordinary
cost of interpreters, which drives up substantially
the expenses of the congresses. They
have proposed contributing 50 or more Kindles
at their own expense, with translations of the
Congress Plenary addresses downloaded to
them; these lectures should also be available to
participants who can download to their own
devices.
We ask you to consider at least the following
questions: Are you concerned about the expansion
of Analytical Psychology? If yes, in what
ways? To what extent are you willing to hand
over this mission to the IAAP? How might the
IAAP better support our other society concerns
and endeavors? Your answers will help us represent
your views and opinions at the IAAP
level.
With collegial greetings on behalf of the ExCo,
John Desteian and Stacy Wirth
Co-Presidents
VENUE This year’s Forum will take place at the
Epi Park Seminar Center, an oasis within the city
of Zürich overlooking the lake and surrounded by
romantic gardens. Established in 2009 on the
grounds of today’s Swiss Epilepsy Center, the
venue is a stone’s throw from Bürghölzli where
C.G. Jung began his psychiatric practice and
work with the Association Experiment. The Seminar
Center is housed in the original building that
opened in 1886 as the “Swiss Clinic for Epileptics.”
Into the 1950’s the clinic treated children,
NEWS FROM ISAPZURICH
Murray Stein, Former President
The year 2011 marked the 50th anniversary of
C.G. Jung’s death. With this in mind, ISAP paid
due respect to Prof. Jung with three special
events: A series of lectures and tours given by
ISAP analysts at the Museum Rietberg in conjunction
with the exhibition of The Red Book; a
Symposium held at the ETH on the subject of
“C.G. Jung in the Historical Context of the
1930’s;” and an all-day Memorial on June 6 at
the Kunsthaus of Zurich. All of these events
were conducted in cooperation with other institutions,
including the C.G. Jung Institute of
Kusnacht, the Psychological Club, the Foundation
for the Works of C.G. Jung, the Swiss
Foundation Museum for Analytical Psychology
after C.G. Jung, the Philemon Foundation, and
the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). This
has been a year of collaboration and cooperation
with a broad range of communities who
share ISAP’s interest in the recognition of
Jung’s work and Analytical Psychology in the
public world.
With sadness, ISAP also had to take leave in
2011 of its beloved and esteemed senior training
analyst and teacher, Dr. Mario Jacoby.
Known to all of us simply as “Mario,” he
brought a charm, intelligence and a loving
presence into our community for as long as we
can remember. He was well celebrated at
ISAP’s Opening Tea in March with a shower of
memories and accolades from colleagues of
long standing, of which a booklet was made in
his honor with the title Liber Amicorum (eds.
Stacy Wirth and Murray Stein). Mario’s health
deteriorated over the summer, and he passed
away on Oct. 1 at the age of 86. His funeral
took place on October 8 in Zollikon, Mario’s
home of many years, in the company of friends
and colleagues, all of whom were deeply moved
by the grave-side ceremony conducted by Dr.
Paul Brutsche and the words of appreciation
spoken by friends and colleagues in the service
following.
Looking at the present situation at ISAP, I am
happy to report that the training program is
thriving and in excellent spirits. We are blessed
not only with a dedicated faculty but also with a
group of outstandingly gifted and talented students
to match. The student organization has
been actively engaged during the year in exchanges
with analysts about the present state
of ISAP and its vision for the future, in developing
programs for students to share their gifts
and achievements with one another, and in
supporting ISAP activities with contributions of
many kinds on all levels. It is a joy to watch the
next generation of Jungian analysts taking form
before one’s very eyes in the seminars and
events at ISAP.
As always, the Jungian Odyssey was a notable
success in 2011, with a highly stimulating week
shared by a full house at Monte Verita, the
historic place overlooking Ascona and a favorite
spot for Jungians since the 1930’s. The theme
of this year’s JO was “The Playful Psyche: Entering
Chaos, Coincidence, Creation.”
As the JO traditionally concludes the academic
year at ISAP, the Zurich Lecture Series opens
AGAP HISTORY:
URSULA ULMER
From an Interview
with Kathleen Moreau, Jan 2012
Ursula Ulmer is
currently Director
of Admissions at
ISAPZURICH and
a Member of the
AGAP ExCo. A
training analyst
since 1979, she
has held lectures,
seminars and supervision in South Africa. The interview
was done in her home in Zürich in January 2012.
I landed in Zürich by accident in 1964. I had no
intention of staying. I was on my way back to the States
from Sierra Leone where I had been in the Peace Corps
for two years and all my clothes had been shipped back.
And it was only when I had nothing better to do that I
decided to stay. I had applied to graduate school as my
West Africa tour was ending. I was not accepted and I
was at loose ends. It was now a question of what to do
next.
Jung’s Memories, Dreams and Reflections had been one
of the books (a rare item) passed around among the
Peace Corps volunteers. I decided to stop in Zürich to
see Bollingen. I had been given a letter of introduction
to Dieter Baumann, Jung’s grandson. When I saw him
and told him that I did not know what to do next he
asked whether I knew that there was a Jung Institute
around the corner. I went to Gemeindestrasse and there
was Fraulein Buchler, a very dear soul, working in the
front office. I soon began classes and analysis.
There were very few students when I began. I remember
in the lecture room there would be little pieces of
paper on the chairs in the front rows reserving them for
the Psychology Club people. The students were relegated
to the back. The emphasis was on lectures, not
training.
As a foreigner, I particularly appreciated the Jung Institute
expatriate environment as the Swiss were not particularly
welcoming. The von Franz lectures were absolutely
fantastic. It was a kind of learning I had never
been exposed to before. Eleanor Mattern, a good friend,
captured this in an image. “It was like there was a tube
going from von Franz to us, as if we were being fed in a
way. It was a very special feeling.” Dr. Fierz, on the
other hand, and his style of psychiatry, was utterly not
understandable for me. He was like a tall, thin gnome.
It was almost as if he had pointed ears and a very trick-
10
AGAP
FORUM
ster smile and I never knew what was going to come
next. I had a very difficult time following him. When I
decided to do the Propaedeuticum, my American
background made me wonder: “what specific books do
I need to read for which exams?” I asked Dr. Riklin
what to read as I had him for the neurosis exam. He
smiled very sweetly, put his arm gently around my
shoulder and made a slow, sweeping gesture saying,
“There’s the library.”
When the Institute moved from Gemeindestrasse to
Küsnacht there had been several shifts. When I had
done my admission interviews in 1964, I had spoken
with each member of the Curatorium for about 15
minutes. By 1979 there were Selection Committees and
much more emphasis on the training.
I chose to study Jung when I finally realized that I felt
better when thinking within a Jungian framework. It
suited me. It reminds me of how von Franz determines
whether a fairy tale interpretation is acceptable. She
would say, “It has to click, it just makes you feel better.”
I gave up looking for the TRUTH. Have had other
guides on this journey. Mrs. Pope, with whom I
worked, helped me to dare to begin in earnest the path
of training. I hope I, too, provide a space for students
and analysands to sort out their next steps.
