publisher’s note
look, boy, there’s a zebra in the backyard!” my
grandfather said. African wildlife in the back
yard? I was eight, not stupid.
The year was 1978. The place was my grandfather’s
Escondido home, which overlooked
what felt like the world—from Lake Hodges
all the way to the hot air balloons at Del Mar. At the time,
you had to take a dirt road to get there. Today it’s “freeway
friendly.” I was on tippy-toes, hoping, but not expecting
to spot exotic animals through a rusty telescope. And
what did I see? A mother-lovin’ zebra.
The animal turned out to be one of thousands living at
the Wild Animal Park. The memory is part of the magnetism
that lured me here, to Pacific Beach, in 1993.
I moved from the east coast into an apartment behind
Vons, at Garnet and Ingraham. The 5 a.m. beep of those
damn produce trucks reversing into the delivery bay will
never leave me—even now that Staples has replaced
Vons. I landed a gig writing high school sports stories for
the La Jolla Light for 50 bucks a pop. Next was writing
press releases and being the $6-an-hour fileboy for Spike
‘n’ Mike’s Sick & Twisted Festival of Animation.
Manifest destiny had gotten me pretty far, but not all
the way to the coast. I needed mucho mas dinero to move
west, up the alphabet, from Ingraham all the way to Cass
or Bayard or so. My next apartment, though bigger, was
still a solid quarter-mile from the sand. But it was in Pacific
Beach, in Southern California, and that turns out to have
been the whole point.
In San Diego, whether you live a few steps or a car-ride
away from the beach, you can wear flip-flops in January
and sunburn your feet. You can learn a hundred words in
Spanish, even if you’re a gringo from Philadelphia. You can
meet your wife at a gay bar (it was straight night, I swear)
and live the dream that is Southern California, whether
you’re from Poway or Norway.
Pacific Beach Magazine celebrates the beautiful life
along the coast in Southern California. It’s about trying
to catch a glimpse of the zebra in the backyard to create
memories that last lifetimes.
Please enjoy this premier issue of Pacific Beach Magazine.
Walking west on Garnet Ave. from Ingraham St., the progression
of storefronts is something like: sushi, clothing boutique,
sushi, tattoo shop, sushi... Starbucks.
So who’s got the best hand-roll in town? Tough to say. But for great food,
friendly chefs (Saul, Carlos and Adrian) and a killer vibe, try Kabuki.
At Kabuki Sushi the rolls come to you. Small boats float around an oval, racetrack-like
moat that encircles the sushi bar. Sushi chefs cut and roll inside the
moat, then put the goods on the boats, which travel around the bar to you. Don’t
miss the boat—grab what you want before it speeds off to your right and someone
else reels it in.
When you’ve eaten whatever floats your boat, your plates are counted and your
check is delivered. No surprises—a picture of each plate and its corresponding
price are displayed on the menu, so you know what your roll will cost before
you download it from the moat.
aren’t afraid to get your mercury
studies show that
capsaicin, a chemical found
for the last 20 years,” says Mehran
Saberi, president of Mayfair Homes,
Inc., Avalon’s development firm. “I
have seen rejuvenation due to the
changes in the housing market and
the economy.”
Priced from the low $500,000s,
Avalon’s posh two-bedroom/two-
bath condos will sport granite-andstainless
kitchens and beach-and-bay
proximity. Saberi hopes to fill the retail
spaces with boutiques, extending
a beautiful model kitchen at the avalon
architect’s rendering of avalon, hornblend
street’s newest lux address
the Garnet Ave. shopping district one block south. “People will live, shop and play on
the same block,” he says.
The late Henry Hester, San Diego’s modernist architect, designed 3200 Sixth Ave.,
the famous luxury apartment overlooking Balboa Park. “It was the place to live back in
1959,” says David Lorimer, Avalon’s architect. With floor-to-ceiling windows, a flat roof
and other mid-century influences, Avalon promises to be the 3200 of Pacific Beach.
It’s our premier issue. Our fi rst cover shoot.
We gotta get it right.
We’re planning early-morning makeovers
for our models before we take them into the
San Diego sun for the photo shoot on Mission
Bay. Just one problem—in a town that
sees two rainy days a year, it’s cloudy with
a drizzle. Holy shizzle. Nervous? Us? Come
behind the scenes with our crew to see just
how edgy we are.
The weather outside
is frightful, but
the indoor space is
delightful. We’re at the exquisite bayfront Catamaran
Spa, where the staff are eager to help.
We’re waiting for the models to show up and
praying to our respective gods for sun. Fortunately,
we have hired star photographer Christa
Renee, who has shot for Apple Computers,
MINI Cooper, Roxy and Ripcurl. Christa glances
at the ominous sky. “No problem,” she says,
unloading her equipment. We breathe.
We’re relieved when our models arrive at
6 a.m., bright and fresh-faced even before
makeup: Pacifi c Beach beauty Sydney Wheel-
er, a 22-year-old model for La Jolla-based Jet
Set Agency and a local university student; and
Geoff Stirling, a lanky 27-year-old actor-slashmodel
with bay-blue
eyes. “I need some
coffee,” says Geoff.
Coffee comes. We
breathe again.
Sydney and Geoff
are in for a sweet surprise—and
they’re
getting paid for it.
In addition to being
chosen for the cover
of our premier issue,
they’re about to revel
in the amenities
of the deluxe Catamaran
Resort and Spa, a leading rejuvenation
destination for tourists and locals.
Geoff and Sydney trade street clothes for
spa robes as they indulge in papaya facials,
body scrubs and pedicures. As Geoff says
of the rich fi g-and-cucumber-scented atmosphere,
“It’s all in a day’s work.”
as the twin blondes
from the hit NBC reality
show Treasure Hunters.
They’re famous locally
for mixing it up behind
the bar at Johnny V.
what’s it like BeinG
a tv star?
m: “A lot harder than it
looks. There was a lot of
running!”
j: “I actually fractured
my leg. After a 20-mile
canoe ride down a river
in Montana, I fell into
this huge hole and split
my tibia in half!” Ouch.
At Johnny V, the twins
have broken only bottles...and
a few hearts.
what do you drink?
m:“I like to drink Ketel
One Citron on the rocks.
But my signature drink is
a strawberry lemon drop
martini. I make that for
the girls who come to
the bar and are just like
‘make me something
good!’”
Jessica’s signature
chocolate martini will
make you see double
— even when her twin’s
not around.
about pB now?
I love PB for a million
reasons: Tourmaline,
Lahaina’s deck, Bogart
Yogurt’s peanut butter
