STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION TOWARD ENGLISH TEACHERS’ COMPETENCES IN TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES Oleh: Khairunnisa Saleh Siregar (Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Jurusan PBS <strong>FKIP</strong> Universitas Jambi) ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to describe students‟ perception toward English teachers‟ competences in teaching and learning activities in school. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The participants of this research were 48 students of the eleventh grade from senior high school. To gain the data about students‟ perception, the questionnaires were distributed and tested to the sample of the research and interview. The data was analyzed by using Likert Scale. The Likert Scale was used for the questionaire, then the result of questionnaire were explained by description. From the finding and discussion, it can be concluded that based on students‟ perception, they have positive perception to their English Teacher. They believed that based on what have they seen, felt and done, their English teacher has good competence in four aspect of competence (profesionalism, social,personal and pedagogy). Furthermore, the highest competence is profesionalism competence with 198,8 score and in strong interval. The average of all competence is 184,5 or in strong interval. It proved that the English teachers in their school has good competence. Key word: Perception, teachers’ competence INTRODUCTION Teaching profession is a profession within the framework of strategic intellectual life of the nation. The teacher is one component of which is important because as the spearhead in education. Teacher works educate the direction for a change of behavior in accordance with the purpose of education ( Carter, 2008 : [ online]). The teacher has responsibility to facilitate teaching and learning process in the classroom. This is where the teachers become the motor of overall teaching and learning activities that take place in the educational situation in order to achieve certain educational goals ( Carter, 2008 : [ online] ). Moreover, Cupino (2008, [online] ) says that teaching profession is a very noble profession and people who take this profession is among those who lucky because they let go of the shackles of ignorance, educating people, creating a human, virtuous, faithful, devoted, using thoughts, feelings and trained human skills. Uno (2011:60) states that a professional teacher must have competence in doing learning program. Fullan ( in Uno, 2011:62) explains that competence is broad capacities as fully human attribute. Teachers competence is supposed to include all “qualities of personal effectiveness that are required in the work place”, it is certain teachers have here a very diverse set of qualities indeed : attitudes, motives, interest, personal attunements of all kinds, perceptiveness, receptive, openness, creativity, social skills generally, interpersonal maturity, kinds of personal identification, etc. Moreover, Usman in Saudagar and Idrus (2009 : 30) 2
states that competences is a situation which describes the quantitative and qualitative quality of person. From the explanation above it can be assumed that teacher competences are seen into two concepts, they are as teachers‟ skill indicator and teachers‟ concepts which is contain of cognitive, affective and conation aspect. Competence teachers is needed to build up the students‟ ability in academic and non academic. School that has competence teachers will get some advantages. One of the advantages is the students will get more motivation in learning activity. So, students will get good mark and pass in national examination ( Soetjipto and Kosasi, 2009 : 34). Regarding the explanation above, it is worthwhile to investigate how the students‟ perception toward English teachers‟ competence in English teaching and learning activities. REVIEW OF LITERATURE Definition of Perception According to Woolfolk and Nicolich (1980:197), perception refers to the meaning of information received through person‟ senses. It means that condtructed partly from the way person organizes the information. Perception is the process interpreting stimuli which has been in the brain. It is an information process, which is based on previous experiences. The process is influenced by how the stimuli are arranged, based on background, feeling, desire, attitudes and objective (Mahmud in Rohani, 2009 : 3). Moscovitz and Orgel in Walgito (2010 : 98) state that perception is an intregated process in self to the stimulation that is accepted. In other words, the form and the meaning of the perception might be determined by the condition of the individuals who state the perception, object and attitude. The statement of the perception might be an arrangement or disagreement toward an event, object or attitude. It can be assumed that the perception is person‟s way of seeing, understanding or interpreting something. In this case, it talks about teachers‟ perception in interpreting the teachers‟ competences. Types of Perception Soemanto‟s (in Rohani, 2009 : 7) states that perception does not only happen in one time, but it can happen in the past, present and future . He divides perception into three types; the past, present and future perceptions. The past perception is a reaction to stimulus by developing personal impression oriented to the past observation. The next perception is present perception or imagination perception. The last is future perception or initiative perception. Future perception means a reaction to stimulus by developing personal impression oriented to the future observation. While Sujanto (in Rohani, 2009 : 8) says that each individual has her/his own types of perception which are grouped into five, such as visual, auditive, motorical, tactile and mixed perception. Visual means that one has a good memory of what he saw and auditive means that one can remember well what they heard, motorical means that one has a good memory of what he felt, tactile means that one has a good memory of what he touched, and mixed means that the power for everything that they have sensed. Process of Perception Perception is not happening directly. There some psychological processes in influencing a perception. Thoha in Rohani (2009 : 9) states that there are four processes of perception, such as : stimulation, registration, interpretation and feed back. The process of 3
