ST. MARY‟S RECALL
A NEWSLETTER FOR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS OF ST. MARY‟S SCHOOL, SLEEPY EYE, MN VOLUME 26 NUMBER 3 SUMMER 2010
Congratulations Gigi and Cindy!
Gigi Portner taught religion and independent reading and
writing at St. Mary‟s. For many years, she shared her faith,
her creativity, and her love of learning with the students and
staff of St. Mary‟s.
The annual Mike Maurer award is given to a St. Mary‟s employee who exemplifies Christian values, dedication and
loyalty to St. Mary‟s and a love for education and the mission of the school and parish. This year‟s winners, Cindy Rieke
and Gigi Portner, are both extremely deserving of this honor.
Gigi Portner, who taught at St. Mary‟s for 26 years, served as a high school religion instructor and developed an
independent reading and writing class. Gigi loves to read and to learn and shared that passion with her students. Her
commitment to St. Mary‟s and its students is incredible. One example is the many, many Marathon letters that she writes
to alumni each year. A former student recalls, “Gigi Portner
was an excellent example of the lessons she taught. She was
faith-filled, and it came through when she both talked in
tongues and when she taught Church history.” She will be
missed next year as she begins enjoying her retirement!
Cindy Rieke served as the elementary librarian for 10
years. She is known for using her creative gifts to inspire students
to read! Cindy is an incredible librarian, developing exciting
reading incentives, sharing her love of books with others
and being a wonderful and positive role model. She was described
by colleague Linda (Schroepfer „69) Seifert as
“...overflowing with an excitement and love for reading, children‟s
literature, and for the very children themselves”. She
will also be missed as she moves on from St. Mary‟s to pursue
other ventures!
On behalf of St. Mary‟s School, we also offer a very special
thank you to Mike Maurer who so generously gives this
award each year. His commitment to Catholic education and
to St. Mary‟s is a tremendous blessing to us. Thank you
Mike!
Cindy Rieke, elementary librarian, shared her love of books
with the students of St. Mary‟s. She is pictured here with Diane
Lax‟s first grade class. Cindy will be missed next year as she
pursues new ventures!
Congratulations to Cindy Rieke and Gigi Portner who were
selected by the St. Mary‟s faculty and staff to receive the Mike
Maurer Award! Cindy and Gigi are pictured receiving their
awards from Msgr. Lozinski.

a tremendous amount of assistance from Deacon Zach Peterson.
The boys team finished 22-23, 6th place in the Tomahawk
was sophomore Mikail Sellner‟s, son of Brian („76) and Connie
golfer! The girls had a 38-4 record, finished 1st in the Tomahawk
Conference and Subsections and 2nd place at Sections, missing a
team trip to State by 8 strokes, the closest any team has come to
making a team trip to State. Junior Serena Rubey, daughter of
Dave („76) and Judy, secured a trip to the State Tournament.
Dear Alumni and Friends of St. Mary‟s School:
As all of you know so very well the summer always goes fast. So it is here at St. Mary‟s. The
lazy days of summer have been anything but that. Mr. Neubauer and Mrs. Gangelhoff have been
at their desk practically every day this summer. We are so fortunate to have such a dedicated
administration. And of course Rick Gilliland has been busy not only maintaining the campus but
enhancing it (tuck pointing the whole plant-where needed). Kathy Goblirsch has been busy
keeping the bills paid and creditors away. And of course, Chris has been trying to make contacts
through the development office. The teachers and support staff have been faithfully working
behind the scenes.
The big news this summer has been the discovery that the underground pipes that carry the
steam from the boilers in the parish garage basement to the school can no longer fulfill their task.
They have out served their usefulness. We are in the process of studying what will be the best solution for now and the future
due to this most recent challenge. Fortunately many good people have stepped forward to give explanations and offer
advice. With God‟s grace and your prayers we hope that we make the right decisions. Please say a prayer for us.
We have completed our Annual Alumni Appeal for fiscal year 2009-10. Our goal was $40,000.00. We raised $35,217.44
or 88% of the goal. This amount represents an increase of $6,504.44 over last year‟s appeal. This is fabulous. This means
that there are many of you who are willing to sacrifice for your alma mater and want St. Mary‟s to continue fulfilling its
mission. I want to thank each and every one of you for your sacrifice and generosity for St. Mary‟s. We are proud of who St.
Mary‟s is and what it continues to accomplish; it would be much more difficult without your support.
And finally, we are looking forward to the beginning of a new year of God‟s grace and favor. The principals are excited,
the teachers prepared, the curriculum established and the building has been cleaned. All is poised to have another successful
year as we welcome our students for the 127 th year of education. We look forward to our opening day Mass on August 30 th
with Bishop John LeVoir. I invite as many of you as are able to come and share in that great celebration. I invite you to come
to the school at anytime to tour or observe. We are pleased at what is happening within our walls. We have so many good
things happening here that we want to share them as much as possible.
May God bless each of you and may His name be praised. Msgr. Eugene L. Lozinski, Pastor-Superintendent
of 1950 on which my brother, Ken Murry was a member. Unfortunately, Ken broke his
collarbone early in the season so Coach Ray Wilder sent him down to coach the grade school
team; a photo of this is in the school archives. I was on this team along with several of my
classmates. Ken and Tom Haas were both halfbacks. Ken was hoping to follow his brother,
Charlie‟s footsteps to the school Hall of Fame.”
Terry Treml Memorial Update
In 2010, Terry Treml Memorial money has
helped purchase many new items for the school‟s
needs. Since the last issue of RECALL, helping to
outfit the Junior High Girls Softball team with new
uniforms, a request also came in before the spring
sports season for new bats for the baseball and
softball teams. Some money was left over and did
help to purchase necessary bats for the 2010 baseball
and softball teams. The drive for the 2010 year is
going well. However, it has been a slow year for
donations thus far. So if you'd like to donate again or
are a first time giver, please make your tax deductible
check out to the Terry Treml Memorial and mail to
Dr. Dean Brinkman, 505 Fourth Avenue NW, Sleepy
Eye, MN 56085 As always, necessary and needed
items and projects will be decided by the athletic director
and administration to put your donations back
into St. Mary's.
God's blessings to you, Dr. Dean („81)
From the Development Director…
By Chris (Berkner „81) Heiderscheidt
Thank you, thank you… included in this issue is the annual report of gifts from you, our alumni and
friends, received during our fiscal year 2009-2010. I wish to express a heartfelt thank you to everyone who
gave to St. Mary‟s this past year.
A goal for this upcoming year is to compile as many email addresses as possible from you and in turn,
offer you the opportunity to receive your Recall issues electronically. Not only will this save St. Mary‟s
money, but it will allow us to help our environment as well. You can begin today by sending me your email
address and in turn indicate how you would like to receive your future Recall newsletters. Please keep in
mind we will continue to mail issues to our alumni and friends.
Watch for a new and updated look to our website this fall. Chris (Braun „96) Andres has been busy
redesigning and updating it. I wish to give a big thank-you to Deanna (Fuchs „98) Schwint for sharing her expertise in designing
our current site years ago, which has served us well.
We hope to see you at our Alumni & Friends Golf Tournament which is once again on a Saturday, September 11, to allow
more alumni and friends to attend from out of town. Please call to sign up your 3 person team for this best ball tournament!

Happy Birthday Seifert Quads!
The Seifert quads, Monica Clayton („68), Marie („68)
Hoffmann, Martha („68) Andersen, and Mike („69),
helped to put Sleepy Eye on the map as their birth marked
the first set of quadruplets born in Brown County and the
first set of quads believed to survive to adulthood in
Minnesota. Born to Art and Delores Seifert on May 3,
1950 at the Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital, the quads‟
arrival made news throughout the entire country. 2010
marked the quads‟ 60th birthday and, as they do every
decade, they celebrated with a birthday party! There was
also a display on Main Street with memorabilia and
photos. Happy Birthday Mike, Martha, Monica and Marie!
