Under the direction of Head Coach Brent Kucera, and assistant coaches Matt
Andres, Dan Schmid (‘95) Mark Simon (‘96), Mark Tauer (‘71), Dusty Mangen (‘02),
Nick Novotny (‘02), and Seth Nevold, the 2011 Knights football team had an incredible
season. With a record of 9-4 (unbeaten at home!), the Knights are enjoying the
school’s third trip to the elite State Tournament and the first ever school trip to the
Dome. Kucera says, “We are excited to be the first St. Mary's team to ever play at
the Dome. We are taking pride in making our alumni proud.” The entire school community,
including our alumni, are so proud of our Knights and their accomplishments.
Members of the 1979 and 1988 teams who also made trips to the State Tournament
joined the 2011 team at a pepfest before the first state game to offer their inspiration
and best wishes. Jason Hertling (‘89) generously offered a $500 donation from Mediacom,
his employer, to help St. Mary’s athletic department. The Knights tradition continues
at St. Mary’s!
Kucera explains, “The team chemistry and leadership is what has gotten us here. The
kids are truly a team and will do whatever is asked of them in the best interests of the
team. The seniors pictured front row l-r: Lauri Vuoerenpae (foreign exchange student);
Tanner Weiss, son of Mike (’86) and Lori; Zach Miller, son of Ron and
Melissa; Scott Salfer, son of Ron and Kim; Kyle Krzmarzick, son of Pat (‘78) and
Jacque (Ladd ’83). Back row l-r: Joe Meyer, son of Dean (’82) and Darla; Nolan
Helget, son of David (’81) and Tammy; Jake Lilleodden, son of Jeff and Julie; Josh
Kopacek, son of Terry and Janelle (Reinarts ‘87); Brady Hansen, son of Craig
(’74) and Linda; James Pulley, son of Tracy More, and Adam Sellner, son of Loran
(’83) and Heidi, have led this team all season and the team has followed.
A key for our success has been our balanced offensive attack. We take whatever teams
give us. If teams decide to stop our pass we run the ball. If they stack the box we pass
the ball. Not too many teams in the state have a strong balanced attack. Most are one
dimensional. Another huge key to our success has been our much improved offensive
line. They have not allowed a sack since our first game against Cathedral in the 1st
quarter. It has been 141 pass attempts since the last time Jordan (Anderson, son of
Paul and Julie) has been sacked. I think Jordan needs to take his line out for a steak
dinner! The team as a whole...coaching staff and players...just seems to gel. Our team
chemistry is as good as I have ever seen a team. We communicate well and respect
each other...and most importantly we have fun together. Another key to our success
has been our health. We have everybody healthy which is key to making runs in the
playoffs. Teams we have faced have not been so fortunate. So please say a prayer as a
thanks and a continuation [of our health].”
We are so proud of our Knights! Congratulations on your accomplishments this year!
Fall Sports Update
The St. Mary’s—Sleepy Eye-New Ulm Cathedral Knights cross country team learned a lot about themselves this year
according to Coach Scott DeMaris. The importance of being in good condition as the season starts was very evident as
the season went on. “We were not able to race well early in the season, and, as others were peaking, it seemed we were
still getting in racing shape,” said DeMaris. The team struggled to have a full team for parts of this season. For the
girls’ team, this meant having two seventh graders run. Junior Kari Schumacher, daughter of Dean (’76) and Julie was
a very consistent top runner. She was our top runner for the 5 th straight year. This included her victory at the
Tomahawk Conference Meet. Senior Amanda Goblirsch, daughter of David and Michelle was our most improved
runner. Winning the Conference Meet was a big highlight for the girls’ team. For the boys, freshman Stephen Joyce,
son of James and Kathleen, threatened at times to take over the top spot. St. Mary’s looks for him to help lead the way
again next year. “We will miss all of our seniors and hope for our underclassmen to return with a great excitement to
improve on this year’s results,” concluded DeMaris.
The River Valley Wildcats tennis team, under the direction of head coach Brad Goede, ended their season with a 6-14
record. The River Valley Wildcats include players from St. Mary’s, Sleepy Eye Public School, and Springfield Public
School. St. Mary’s players include senior Larissa Krebs, daughter of Shari (’90), and freshmen Erika Ries, daughter
of Bill and Julie, and Kacie Goblirsch, daughter of David and Michelle.
Under the direction of head coach Angie Novotny and assistant coaches Julie Lilleodden and Andrew Bach, the
Lady Knights volleyball team ended their season with a 9-15 record. Seven seniors led the team: Allison Woitas,
daughter of Bruce and Mary; Courtney Schneider, daughter of Kevin Schneider and Amy Wendinger; Ellen
Mathiowetz, daughter of Dean Mathiowetz and Judy Mathiowetz; Natalie Schwartz, daughter of John (‘74) and
Rose; Mandee Heiderscheidt, daughter of Todd (‘83) and Maureen (Berkner ‘85); Lex Domeier, daughter of Gary
and LeAnn (Lund ‘90); and Alex Brinkman, daughter of Dean (‘81) and Sandy. Team awards were given to Allison
Woitas for Leadership; Mandee Heiderscheidt for MVP; and Jessica Schmitz, daughter of Tony (‘82) and Lisa
(Mages ‘84), as Most Improved. Maddy Helget, daughter of Terry and Tammy, earned All Conference honors with
Mandee Heiderscheidt as All Conference Honorable Mention.
CORRECTION: Named to Tomahawk Conference All Academic Team was Molly Lax, daughter of Monica (Sellner
’79) and Rick Lax. Molly’s parents were incorrectly identified in the last RECALL; we apologize for the error!
Dear Alumni and Friends of St. Mary’s School:
These are exciting days for St. Mary’s as we rejoice with our Knights football team as
they won the section championship and moved forward to the state game at the Dome. I
want to commend each and every player for their sportsmanship as well as hard work and
determination to do their best. I wish to thank the coaching staff, especially Brent Kucera,
who has done a great job in leading our team. May God guide and bless all of you so that
He may be glorified through you.
We have just finished our first quarter and, from all indications, it was a great success.
Our students are applying themselves earnestly and accomplishing one of the primary ends
of our school: to be educated in order to be able to do whatever God asks of them in this
life.
We have begun our Alumni & Friends Annual Appeal. As you know the cost of
carrying on the work of Catholic education is becoming increasingly more challenging.
This is particularly true of a Catholic education endeavor such as St. Mary’s. A parish with a pre-school through 12 th
grade Catholic School is extremely rare today. It is possible only through the dedication, commitment and sacrifices of
the people of St. Mary’s Parish and you, our alumni and friends of St. Mary’s.
This appeal helps us meet our budget and thus carry on this great work which is such a vital ministry of the parish of
St. Mary’s. Our school exists to carry on the mission of Jesus who gave the command to go out to the world to baptize
and teach the message of the Gospel, the Good News that Jesus has suffered and died for them and has risen from the
dead thus opening the gates of heaven.
We will be grateful for whatever you can give to help us continue the mission of Jesus here at St. Mary’s. This work
is vital for our Church and our society. In these trying economic times, your sacrifice will take on special meaning and
significance as it draws all of us close to Christ who gave His all for us.
May God bless you and may His name be praised forever.
Msgr. Eugene L. Lozinski
Thank you for your gift of $525.00 to our Alumni
& Friends Annual Appeal Fund!
A Marathon of Blessings
On October 7, 2011, St. Mary’s Catholic School celebrated our Marathon for Non-Public Education! As always, this
proved to be a day to reflect on the “marathon” of blessings that St. Mary’s receives, blessings in the form of our
students, parents, teachers, alumni, friends, generous benefactors, and the opportunity to share the gift of Catholic
education with Sleepy Eye and the surrounding communities. To date, the Marathon has generated over $35,000, monies
that will be used to continue providing a high quality Catholic education to our students. Thank you for being one of our
“marathon” of blessings as you support our school!
The Blessing of Faith
Bishop John LeVoir greets students following the allschool
Marathon Mass. It is an honor to have the Bishop
celebrate Mass with us as the celebration of the Eucharist
is the pinnacle of all that St. Mary’s stands for.
The Blessing of Students
Elementary students are paired with junior/senior high
school students for the symbolic Marathon through
town. Then, at the park, the students played games and
had a delicious snack courtesy of the Knights of
Columbus.
The Blessing of Fun
Students who brought in $90 or more where entered
into a drawing to participate in Minute-to-Win! These
students (Becky Guldan, daughter of Tom (’82) and
Bonnie (Nelson ‘84), Kyle Krzmarzick, son of Pat
and Jacque (Ladd ’83) and Bethany Berkner,
daughter of Pat (’80) and Patty (Spaeth ‘80)) are
attempting to place six penne noodles on a spaghetti
noodle in less than 60 seconds!
The Blessing of Alumni
Our students wrote
letters to our alumni,
asking for Marathon
pledges, and the
generous response was
overwhelming! Pictured
is one of our alumni
Judd Walter (‘98) with
his kindergarten son
Will. The support of our
alumni is extremely
important and much
appreciated!
A Marathon of Blessings
of St. Catherine’s in Redwood Falls. Because of her efforts,
parishioners from St. Catherine’s generously pledged her for
the Marathon, making her the top pledge earner for the
On October 11-13, a visiting team from MNSAA (Minnesota Non-
Public School Accreditation Association) assessed the school by
examining our self-study documents, verifying reports, comparing
indicators of compliance with accreditation standards, interviewing
teachers and school administrators, and observing the school in action
for several days. They randomly chose parents to call and interview,
plus visited with parishioners. After the October visit, the team will
recommend accreditation status to the respective agencies’ governing
board. Thank you to all who helped to make the visit a success!
