I N T R O D U C T I O N
Hello and a very warm welcome to the winter booklet of Extracurricular
Activities here at the Berlin Brandenburg International School.
This booklet aims to inform you about the 64 Extracurricular Activities (ECAs)
offered by BBIS staff and external instructors in Term 2, starting on Monday
14 th January until Thursday 21 st March 2013 (unless otherwise stated).
Extracurricular Activities are provided in all three terms, each of similar length,
which will enable students to attend a greater variety of activities over the
course of the school year.
The registration is online via the link below, and will close at 15:00 on Thursday
10 th January 2013. A second sign-up period will begin on Monday 14 th January –
Friday 18 th January 2013. Please read carefully the information in the next page.
We strongly encourage all students to participate in this programme as it offers
a unique opportunity to meet new friends, be a risk-taker and share and learn
new passions whilst having fun! The programme enables students to learn new
skills and fully become part of our international school community.
“Audere est Facere” (anonymous)
The ECA programme aims to further open the minds and eyes of our students,
to provide them with something new and challenging to look forward to. We
are therefore excited to be able to offer such diverse activities such as karate,
international award, table tennis, middle earth appreciation club, junior nerdy
book club and many more new activities.
We are very fortunate with the generosity and commitment of the BBIS staff,
external and volunteer instructors, however it is sometimes impossible to offer
activities all-year round. This does provide our students with a greater
opportunity to try different activities throughout the year. It is essential that
all students sign up for the activities.
Sincerely yours,
Ben Dutton
Registration deadline
Deadline for registration period 1 is Thursday 10 th January 2013 at 15:00.
Period 2 is Monday 14 th – Friday 18 th January at 15:00. Term 2 activities
will start in the week beginning Monday 14 th January unless stated. Registration
is online; if you miss the deadlines please contact the ECA Coordinator. If you
miss both deadlines please contact the ECA coordinator via email.
Registration criteria
When an activity continues into a new term, all students need to sign up again
for the activity. Without registering (online form) students will not be
considered for participation and therefore not have permission to be on the
school campus after school hours.
The registration for activities used to be based on a first-come, first-served
basis. We will not use that method anymore. Instead, all students will have
time until the deadline, and beyond to register for the activity of their choice.
Allocation and over-subscribed activities
By Friday 11 th January 2012, all signed up students will receive an email
(provided via the online sign-up), which states whether they have been
accepted or placed on the waiting list, for the activities of their choice. This
letter will also include any other relevant information regarding the activity.
If you do not sign up before the deadline, an email confirmation will
be sent home. Please provide an up-to-date email address for this
purpose.
If an activity is over-subscribed, we will hold a random ballot to allocate the
spaces available. This gives all students the same chance to get enrolled into an
activity. Students who do not make it into an activity will be placed on a waiting
list. We will do our best to keep waiting lists to a minimum. Students who will
be waitlisted, and sign up for the exact same activity in a different term, will be
given preference for that activity.
2
Dress code (Sporting activities)
All participants of sporting activities are expected to wear appropriate,
functional clothing. Indoor activities require non-marking, clean indoor shoes.
Late bus information
The late bus is available to Elementary, Middle and High School students. The
late bus leaves school at 16:35 exactly. This bus will follow a strict route and
time schedule. Please indicate on your registration form on which days you
would like to make use of this optional late bus service.
The bus schedule to Berlin and Potsdam can already be found in this booklet.
There are late buses on Monday till Friday. The normal school bus rules, as
printed in the school handbooks, also apply for the late bus.
Elementary students will need to be collected from the relevant bus
stop where appropriate. If no one is there to meet the student, they will be
returned to BBIS (unless stated), whereby the relevant person will be
contacted.
Please indicate on the sign-up sheet which stop your son/daughter will be
getting off at.
Any students being picked up will need to do so from the Atrium of House 3
(unless other arrangements are made by the instructor).
Costs – new information and guidelines 2012/13
From school year 2012/13 on, the majority of ECAs will include a moderate
contribution to partially cover the costs they generate. The fees for most ECAs
will be as follows and in 3 categories
ECA Fees (term 2)
1 paid ECA = 45 euros
2 or more paid ECAs = 90 euros
Late Bus fee (term 2)
17.50 euros
For each term the prices will vary in cost, please check the upcoming
booklets for term 3 for further information.
3
Each ECA has a payment category either Free, Paid or External.
A number of activities like the lunchtime ECAs and many charitable and/or
ECAs serving the broader BBIS community will remain free as before. Various
exceptions will apply such as for Sailing and other cost-intensive activities, and
all the ECAs offered by an external instructor will, as in the past be charged by
the instructors directly.
All paid ECA’s will be invoiced within the first 4 weeks of them
commencing where possible (Monday 14 th January 2013).
External instructors will provide you with a contract to complete and inform
you directly of the payment details.
Commitment
When you sign up for an activity, it is vital to be aware of the commitment
expected from you. BBIS has the general expectation and sees it as normal
courtesy towards fellow participants and activity leaders that once you have
signed up you attend the activity for the entire length of the term.
If circumstances prevent students from continuing or coming to an activity we
ask you to inform the ECA Coordinator and the activity leader.
The students will learn to draw, illustrate, and paint. Based on
classical techniques each student can develop his own interests.
We will start by drawing from observation of still-lives and from
two-dimensional images. The drawing activities will have its focus
on line and tone creating shadows, surface qualities, focal point
using classical techniques (range of graphite, charcoal, ink,
lightening on coloured paper).
Furthermore, we will explore illustration and painting using basic
colour based techniques. Starting with the classic black-white and
“oker method” we will add some “cold” colours (blue and green).
We will apply our knowledge of how to use the colour wheel and
the importance of grey values in creating representational
paintings.
It is also possible to develop an abstract approach.
We will work on paper and canvas.
This course is designed to meet the needs of students from
various experience and ability levels and will certainly enhance any
artistic development needed in the upper grades and the IB Visual
Arts program at BBIS.

Debate is extremely important to our survival as a civilized world.
Talking about issues and trying to figure out how to solve them,
not only makes people smarter (reading, writing and researching
are its core parts), and makes it easier for them to handle issues
when they arise, but it has been used for millennia as a way of
passing on and changing cultural norms, laws and even mindsets.
Some of the most highly influential people in our universe are or
have been a debater. The next could be YOU! Come and join Ms
Banicevic and Ms Hanlon for fun, challenge, and most of all, a good
debate.
design, creating scenery appropriate to the play and show,
comparing and analyzing other professional designs. The outcome
communication skills and partnering them with new students as
stronger feeling of community and responsibility among students.
In turn, arriving students will feel quickly integrated into their new
school and connected with their new classmates. The ideal
Fed up with always losing your stuff?
Organized Group. We are a student self help group, which
focuses on teaching young people the necessary skills to improve
their personal organizational skills, both academically and
personally. All members join on a voluntary basis and not because
either their teachers or parents tell force them! All members
need to already recognize that they have a problem with their
personal organization, but are now self motivated to do something
about this. The group in the past has helped many students to
remember their homework, keep their rooms tidy and improve
their grades. Our new members’ first organizational challenge will
be to remember to turn up!
