educators interested in teaching art and design at the college level. Taught<br />
online, they explore theoretical foundations of art and design education,<br />
new online tools, and practical aspects of classroom instruction.<br />

Designed to provide a theoretical foundation<br />
for creative professionals who teach or<br />
are preparing to teach at the university<br />
level, this course examines the historical,<br />
cultural, and theoretical underpinnings of<br />
innovative pedagogy using digital and social<br />
media. Learning can involve conventional<br />
online shells, social networking sites and<br />
experiences, modalities such as podcasts and<br />
streaming video, and even the most current<br />
tools, such as ChatRoulette. Students learn<br />
to use a variety of these software tools and<br />
digital modes and consider how to use them<br />
effectively to deliver educational information<br />
at the university level. <strong>The</strong> final course<br />
assignment includes a project brief or lesson<br />
plan as well as the design of digital and social<br />

Students explore the basics of teaching art<br />
and design courses at the university level.<br />
<strong>The</strong>y develop and implement lessons, create<br />
inquiry-based dialogues about art and design,<br />
and find the most effective ways to interact<br />
with students during class critiques and<br />
discussions. <strong>The</strong> course examines distinctive<br />
aspects of teaching art and design, such as<br />
studio assignments, site visits, facilitating<br />
critiques, and cultural history and theory.<br />
By focusing on what is unique to art<br />
and design-based thinking and learning,<br />
students discover the importance of<br />
collaboration, iteration, reflective practice,<br />
and systems thinking in art and design<br />
curricula. (3 graduate credits) Limited to 20.<br />

you are taking a course for credit or auditing.<br />
Registration cannot be completed without<br />
advisor approval and, for credit registration,<br />
confirmation that the credits will be accepted<br />
by the student’s program. Registration must<br />
be completed in person at the Registrar’s<br />
Office, 72 Fifth Avenue.<br />
Nonmatriculated students<br />

or Parsons can register on a noncredit basis<br />
