Bubba Cunningham<br />

Director <strong>of</strong> Athletics<br />

Lawrence R. (Bubba) Cunningham is the director<br />

<strong>of</strong> athletics at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>.<br />

Chancellor Holden Thorp introduced Cunningham,<br />

who had been the director <strong>of</strong> athletics at The<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Tulsa for six years, on October 14,<br />

2011, at a press conference at the Dean E. Smith Center.<br />

Cunningham, 49, <strong>of</strong>ficially began his duties at <strong>Carolina</strong> on<br />

November 14, 2011, succeeding Dick Baddour. Cunningham is the<br />

seventh director <strong>of</strong> athletics in UNC history, following Robert A. Fetzer<br />

(1923-52), Chuck Erickson (1953-67), Homer Rice (1969-75), Bill<br />

Cobey (1976-80), John Sw<strong>of</strong>ford (1980-97) and Baddour.<br />

Cunningham is in his 10th year as a Division I director <strong>of</strong> athletics.<br />

In addition to his tenure at Tulsa, he was the AD for three years from<br />

2002-2005 at Ball State <strong>University</strong>.<br />

From 1988-2002, Cunningham worked in the athletics department<br />

at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Notre Dame. Cunningham served as associate<br />

director <strong>of</strong> athletics for external affairs from 2000-02. He renegotiated<br />

the school’s footwear contract, developed a communications<br />

and marketing plan, created marketing teams for all 26 varsity sports,<br />

increased corporate sponsorship income, created a financial/equity<br />

plan for the department and served as chairman <strong>of</strong> the NCAA Division<br />

I Women’s Golf Committee.<br />

Cunningham earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business<br />

administration, both from Notre Dame, in 1984 and 1988, respectively.<br />

He played on the Irish golf team in 1982-83.<br />

Cunningham serves on the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Committee,<br />

is a member <strong>of</strong> NACDA’s Executive Committee, and was on the Board<br />

<strong>of</strong> Directors <strong>of</strong> the Alzheimers Association <strong>of</strong> Oklahoma and the Folds<br />

<strong>of</strong> Honor Foundation Board. Cunningham also served on the Gatorade<br />

National Advisory Board and has been a featured speaker at numerous<br />

NACDA and I-A institute conferences.<br />

Born in Flint, Mich., and raised in Naples, Fla., Cunningham and<br />

his wife, Tina, have four children: Matthew, Michael, John and Sarah.<br />

DR. BETH MILLER<br />

Senior Associate Director <strong>of</strong> Athletics<br />

Beth Miller is in her 28th year supervising<br />

<strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>’s highly-successful 26-team<br />

Olympic Sports program and serves as UNC’s<br />

Senior Woman Administrator.<br />

A native <strong>of</strong> Landis, N.C., Miller is a 1968<br />

alumna <strong>of</strong> Appalachian State <strong>University</strong> with a<br />

B.S. degree in health and physical education. She has a master’s<br />

from ASU and earned a Doctor <strong>of</strong> Arts degree in physical education<br />

at Middle Tennessee State in 1974.<br />

From 1969-72, Miller served as the head volleyball and basketball<br />

coach at Appalachian State. She became head volleyball<br />

coach at UNC in 1975 and led the Tar Heels to four consecutive<br />

ACC titles from 1980-83 and five postseason tournament appearances.<br />

She also coached s<strong>of</strong>tball at <strong>Carolina</strong> from 1978-79.<br />

In 1979, Miller was named UNC’s Athletic Business Manager.<br />

She retired from coaching volleyball after 1983, but continued to<br />

handle all financial affairs for the department through 1987. She<br />

has overseen UNC’s Olympic Sports program since 1985.<br />

Miller serves on the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics,<br />

as well as a number <strong>of</strong> Atlantic Coast Conference committees,<br />

including those for women’s basketball, women’s golf and volleyball.<br />

She chairs the ACC Awards Committee. Miller also is a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> UNC’s Housing Advisory Board and the Enforcement and<br />

Response Protocol subcommittee <strong>of</strong> the UNC Campus Alcohol<br />

Task Force.<br />

In recognition <strong>of</strong> her outstanding service to <strong>Carolina</strong>, Miller was<br />

honored in April <strong>of</strong> 2008 as a recipient <strong>of</strong> the 2008 C. Knox Massey<br />

Distinguished Service Award, one <strong>of</strong> the most prestigious honors<br />

bestowed by the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>.<br />
