VELUX EHF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2011/12 PREVIEW
• 8,880 minutes until the trophy is won
• 19 th season for the EHF Champions League
• 24 teams from 15 countries (36 from 24 if including Qualification Phase)
• 148 matches until the final destination Cologne
• RK Croatia Osiguranje Zagreb participate for the 18 th time
• Chekhovskie Medvedi for the 12 th straight time
• Three newcomers
One trophy, one city, one dream: 24 teams have to go 18 (or maybe even 20) steps to be on top of
Europe; to be crowned champions of the VELUX EHF Champions League 2011/2012.
In 275 days, on 27 May 2012, the winner of the most important cup in the world of the club handball
will be known – after 148 matches in Group Stage, Last 16, Quarter-Finals and the VELUX EHF FINAL4.
FC Barcelona Intersport start as defending champions – but the number of top opponents is huge this
season. With their new name and new home BM Atletico Madrid are keen to continue their successful
tradition, when they were known as BM Ciudad Real.
The German sides from Hamburg and Kiel will be strong like the Catalans and like the new Danish
champions AG Kobenhavn or traditionally strong teams like MKB Veszprem, MAHB Montpellier or
Chekhovskie Medvedi.
The first steps for all of them are the 10 matches of the Group Stage. On 28 September the starting
whistle will be blown and after the break for EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia the Group Stage continues with
the last three rounds on 8 February 2012.
By 26 February the 16 participants of the knock-out stage will be known, whilst the Last 16 (14 – 25
March) will also be played in the same form as last season.
The four group winners face the four fourth-ranked teams, and the clubs ranked third meet those
ranked second. The better ranked teams have the home right in the second leg.
The winners of the Last 16 qualify for the Quarter-Finals (18 – 29 April 2012), which is the last step to
Cologne. The group winners (if they qualify) again have the home right in the decisive second leg –
and group winners cannot face each other before the VELUX EHF FINAL4.
The semi-finals will take place in Cologne on 26 May – and one day later the 19 th winner of the VELUX
EHF Champions League will be known.

VELUX EHF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2011/12 FACTS
FC Barcelona Intersport are the current EHF Champions League record holders with seven titles,
followed by Atletico Madrid (three titles as BM Ciudad Real) and THW Kiel (two titles).
In total, Spanish teams have won the trophy 13 times, and all of the EHF Champions League winners
since 2005 are participating this season, however, it is not a team from the Iberian peninsula who are
competing this year who have participated the most in the competition though, it is RK Croatia
Osiguranje Zagreb.
Since the start of the EHF Champions League in 1993 the 20-time Croat champion have only missed it
once in the 2001/2002 season and currently start the competition for the 18 th time.
Behind Zagreb are MKB Veszprem, the 20-time Hungarian champions, who participate for the 17 th time
in the EHF Champions League ahead of FC Barcelona Intersport and THW Kiel (both 15), MAHB
Montpellier (14) and Chekhovskie Medvedi (12).
Medvedi, the Russian champions, are the only team to be part of the EHF Champions League for the
12 th straight time, again ahead of Veszprem (11) and Montpellier (10 times).
In contrast, Füchse Berlin (GER), Bjerringbro-Silkeborg and AG Kobenhavn (both DEN) play in the
Group Stage of the VELUX EHF Champions League for the first time.
The first 16 matches of this season’s competition have already been played in the three qualification
and tournaments and one Wild Card tournament.
After 20 teams had qualified directly for the VELUX EHF Champions League, due to the EHF seeding
list, IK Savehof, Partizan Belgrade, Metalurg Skopje and Vive Targi Kielce made their way through to
the Group Stage as the winners of those tournaments, played in a new play-off format with semi-finals
and finals in contrast to the group matches before.
So, after 8,880 minutes of regular time played by more than 400 players in the 24 teams coming from
15 countries one team captain will raise the one trophy everyone wants in Cologne in May 2012.

VELUX EHF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2011/12 TEAM OVERVIEW
Group A:
FC Barcelona Intersport (ESP)
The defending champions have been tipped by many VELUX EHF Champions League coaches as big
favourites to win the VELUX EHF Champions League again this season, with team captain Laszlo Nagy
hoping for a record eighth title too. “It’s easier to get to the top than to remain there,” he said.
The Spanish champions can rely on almost the same team from last season in their 15th season of
participation in the EHF Champions League. Only Iker Romero has left the club but Spanish
internationals Viran Morros (Atletico Madrid) and Mikel Aguirrezabalaga (Reale Ademar León) signed
for the Catalans, who hold the record for winning the EHF Champions League the most times.
Croatia Osiguranje Zagreb (CRO)
For the 20th straight time Zagreb are Croatian champions and for the 18th time (the most out of all
the participants in the competition this season) they play in the EHF Champions League. After
reaching the Last 16 in the last two years the Croats hope to make the Quarter-Finals this season.
The only key player who departed is goalkeeper Gorazd Skof, but experienced Josip Valcic from
Gummersbach has joined the club. Ivano Balic is the head of the team, but youngsters like Gojun and
Kopljar are emerging as contenders for the leading position.
Kadetten Schaffhausen (SUI)
Last season the Swiss champions were close to a big sensation, as they were close to eliminating
MAHB Montpellier in the Last 16, but lost the second leg. This season coach Petr Hrachovec has to face
the fact that three of his top stars left the club; goalkeeper Bjorgvin Gustavsson, top scorer Mait
Patrail and experienced wing Jan Filip.
However, Schaffhausen can count on a World Champion, the German Christian Dissinger, who was part
of the All Star Team at the 2011 Junior World Championship.
Chambery Savoie HB (FRA)
In their short-term strategy the team from the Alps want to reach the Quarter-Finals, but in the midterm
they hope to be a candidate for the VELUX EHF FINAL4. Coach Philippe Gardent is in his 15th
season on the Chambery bench and he again signed young talented French players to step out of the
shadow of champions Montpellier.
Last season Chambery reached the Last 16 in the “group of death” with teams like THW Kiel, FC
Barcelona and Rhein-Neckar Lowen – and the French runners-up especially can count on their home
court strength.

VELUX EHF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2011/12 TEAM OVERVIEW
HC Bosna BH Gas Sarajevo (BIH)
Last season, for the first time in their club history, the seven-time Bosnian champions reached the
Last 16 – and now the Bosna team is hungry to repeat this success. Coach Irfan Smajlagic has made
several changes to his team with seven newcomers arriving and five players (including top star Petar
Kapisoda) leaving.
On home turf the Sarajevo team always show a stronger performance, attended by thousands of
frenetic spectators, so the objective away will be to become more stable.
IK Savehof (SWE)
For the fourth time the Swedes have qualified for the VELUX EHF Champions League. Savehof won the
qualification tournament in Vienna thanks to their clear semi-final victory over Besiktas and a tight
final qualifying match success against Dinamo Minsk.
The new star of IK Savehof is Swedish international Fredrik Larsson after their former top scorer,
Jonathan Stenbacken, left to join German side Fuchse Berlin. IK Savehof (which is close to
Gothenburg) is well known for their highly successful youth programme and organise the famous
Partille Cup.
Group B:
Chekhovskie Medvedi (RUS)
Chekhovskie Medvedi are the only one of all 24 participating teams to qualify for the Group Stage of
the EHF Champions League for the twelfth straight time.
The Russian champions known as ‘the Bears’ are still clearly the team to beat in Russia, and
internationally they have improved to be considered as one of the major contenders in European
handball. Still counting on physical strong players, coach Vladimir Maximov does not have major
changes in his squad. Only Alexey Kamanin left, but legendary wing player Eduard Kosharov arrived.
Again their aim will be to go to the VELUX EHF FINAL4, but the Bears will face strong opponents in the
first stage as they hope to go through to the Last 16.
MKB Veszprem KC (HUN)
For the 17th time the Hungarian record champions are participating in the VELUX EHF Champions
League – and again they are one of the candidates for the VELUX EHF FINAL4. But like in the last few
seasons, when they had to face extremely strong opponents and were eliminated twice by FC
Barcelona, Veszprem were unlucky with the group draw.
The club from Lake Balaton again signed some big names such as Ferenc Ilyes and or Croatian national
team goalkeeper Mirko Allilovic – the successor of the legend between the posts, Dejan Peric. But

VELUX EHF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2011/12 TEAM OVERVIEW
playmaker Nikola Eklemovic left the team of Coach Lajos Mocsai. Top star of Veszprem is Serbian
shooter Marko Vujin, who will leave after this season to THW Kiel.
BM Atletico Madrid (ESP)
New name, old objectives: BM Ciudad Real relocated due to financial reasons from the La Mancha
region to the Spanish capital – and reignites the handball tradition of Atletico. “We are going for all
the titles,” said Coach Talant Dujshebaev, even though his defensive ace Viran Morros moved to the
big rivals FC Barcelona Intersport.
However, Madrid signed the 2.12 metre tall Danish pivot Nikolaj Marussen and the Spaniard Edu
Fernandez and kept the rest of their experienced and successful squad from last season that reached
the VELUX EHF Champions League Final in May, but lost against FC Barcelona. With three titles (2006,
2008, 2009) Madrid are number two in the record list of the EHF Champions League titles, behind FC
Barcelona.
Füchse Berlin (GER)
The Foxes from the German capital were the biggest sensation in the Bundesliga last season, finishing
third in the end, equal on points with THW Kiel and ahead of teams like Flensburg and Rhein-Neckar
Löwen. Competing in the VELUX EHF Champions League 2011/12 is their first ever international
appearance, and the dreams are flying high, despite the strong matches ahead for them in the Group
Stage.
By signing Spanish World Champion and double winner of the VELUX EHF Champions League, Iker
Romero, they have made a huge step on their quest to improving handball interest in Berlin.
Bjerringbro-Silkeborg (DEN)
The Danish league runners-up are another debutant in the Group Stage of the VELUX EHF Champions
League – and another one with high hopes, as it is their objective to make the Last 16 and beyond.
The team of Coach Martin Albrektsen consists of top players like young Danish national team
goalkeeper Niklas Landin, one of the stars at the 2011 World Championship in Sweden, the experienced
team captain Kasper Nielsen – and new signings with international experience such as Swedish pivot
Robert Arrhenius and French player Audray Tuzolana.
KS Vive Targi Kielce (POL)
The team of Coach Bogdan Wenta travelled the long way to be part of the VELUX EHF Champions
League again. After surprisingly losing the Polish league finals against Orlen Wisla Plock, Kielce were
hosts of the Wild Card Tournament and as all organisers before – Leon and Lowen – they qualified for
the Group Stage.

VELUX EHF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2011/12 TEAM OVERVIEW
But it was a real tough struggle to first beat Valladolid in the semi-final and then to eliminate Rhein
Neckar-Lowen in the final, as the Polish runners-up needed extra-time.
Kielce signed two Polish internationals Slawomir Szmal and Grzegorz Tkaczyk from Lowen and
Croatian international Denis Buntic from Leon, as another Croat, Mirza Dzomba, has finished his
career.
Group C:
HSV Hamburg (GER)
Though they do not have a long international history, HSV Hamburg are one of the most successful
teams of the VELUX EHF Champions League in the past few years. They have participated in the
competition four times reaching the Semi-Final three times and the Quarter-Final once – and in all four
seasons they were eliminated by Ciudad Real (now Atletico Madrid).
Despite missing the VELUX EHF Champions League Final in May, last season was the best in the club’s
history as HSV fulfilled their long-term objective – winning the German championship – for the first
time. Per Carlen is now the successor to coach Martin Schwalb who became General Director and
President of the club. Carlen arrived together with his son Oscar and goalkeeper Dan Beutler from
Flensburg. The goal remains the same for HSV; to win one national or international title and to reach
the final destination of the VELUX Champions League 2011/12 - Cologne.
RK Cimos Koper (SLO)
First, they were European Cup winners in the EHF Challenge Cup, then they broke the dominance of RK
Celje and Gorenje Velenje and last season was a total triumph for them as they became Slovenian
champions for the first time and Cup winners for the third time. Coach Fredi Radojkovic has changed
his goalkeeper for the new season by signing the experienced Gorazd Skof from Zagreb, as Darko
Stanic left to Skopje.
For the second time after the 2008/09 season Koper have qualified for the Group Stage of the VELUX
EHF Champions League. “We are more experienced than in our first participation, so it is our objective
to reach the Last 16,” said manager Alex Korsic.
HCM Constanta (ROU)
Newcomer Valentin Ghionnea, one of the best current Romanian players, is the key factor for HCM
Constanta and their high hopes. After their sixth Romanian title the team from the Black Sea hope for
their second qualification for the Last 16 after the 2009/2010 season. HCM Constanta are part of the
VELUX EHF Champions League Group Stage for the sixth time – and despite some changes in the squad
coaches Ion Craciun and former goalkeeping legend Alexandru Buligan hope for a successful season
on domestic and international courts.

VELUX EHF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2011/12 TEAM OVERVIEW
St. Petersburg HC (RUS)
For the second straight time St. Petersburg finished Russian league runners-up below Chekhovskie
Medvedi and for the second time the Last 16 of the VELUX EHF Champions League is the objective of
Coach Dimitri Torgowanow. “Last season, when we were debutants, we lacked experience, now I hope
that we have – especially in away matches – the cleverness to stand up to our opponents,” he said.
The Olympic, World and European Champion still has a very young team, but they are well trained and
used to each other as only two new players have arrived since last season.
Orlen Wisla Plock (POL)
In one of the biggest sensations across the European leagues last season, Plock won the final series in
Poland against the great favourites Kielce. Even in Kielce the team of Danish coach Lars Walther took
the points – and they are now playing for the seventh time in the VELUX EHF Champions League. They
have been eliminated after the Group Stage five times and reached the Last 16 once – but this was 15
years ago.
Now with an improved team helped with the arrivals of the experienced playmaker Nikola Eklemovic
(Veszprem) and Polish international Michal Kubisztal, who arrived from Berlin. “I think we have a
great chance to reach the Last 16, as teams like Constanta, St. Petersburg, Koper and Plock are on the
same level now,” said Club President Andrzej Miszczynski.
RK Metalurg Skopje (MKD)
After two previous unsuccessful attempts, coaching legend Lino Cervar (former Croatian national
coach, Olympic and World Champion) has led Metalurg to the Group Phase of the VELUX EHF
Champions League. The champions of FYR Macedonia improved their team by signing internationally
well-known players like Serbian goalkeeper Darko Stanic from Koper and Zarko Markovic, former
player of Veszprem.
In their qualification tournament Metalurg did not have to give their best to win the semi-final against
Lezion Rishion from Israel, but were highly lucky in the final as they scored the decisive goal to win
against Haslum 29:28, 20 seconds before the final buzzer.
Group D:
Montpellier Agglomeration HB (FRA)
Twice they were close to the VELUX EHF FINAL4, but twice Montpellier were the unlucky loser in the
2010 and 2011 Quarter-Finals against Medvedi and Lowen – now the French champions are trying again
to reach Cologne. But in their group two more contenders – Kiel and Kobenhavn – have this objective
too.
Coach Patrice Canayer, on the MAHB bench since 1994, hopes that no major injuries will stop his team
– the EHF Champions League winner 2002/03 – on their way to their final destination.

VELUX EHF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2011/12 TEAM OVERVIEW
With world class players like Nikola Karabatic, Vid Kavticnik or Michael Guigou, Canayer can count on
huge international experience in the 14 th appearance of the team in the VELUX EHF Champions League.
Montpellier have signed two Slovenians, wing player Dragan Gajic and goalkeeper Primosz Prost – but
lost French international Adrien Di Panda and Czech wing David Juricek.
AG Kobenhavn (DEN)
AG Kobenhavn became Danish champions for the first time in front of the biggest ever crowd at a
handball match. 36,000 spectators attended the second final against Bjerringbro-Silkeborg in the
Parken football arena. Only two years after being promoted from the second league, AGK returned like
a phoenix from the ashes.
Thanks to players like Mikkel Hansen, Joachim Boldsen, Kasper Hvidt or the newcomers Olafur
Stefansson or Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson, the goals are high for the AGK mastermind, manager Jesper
Nielsen: “We want to reach the VELUX EHF FINAL4 – and in the future win the VELUX EHF Champions
League title.”
THW Kiel (GER)
No new players for the first time in 23 years, no players who have left – no team is better prepared
for the VELUX EHF Champions League 2011/12 season than THW Kiel. Long-term injured players Kim
Andersson and Daniel Narcisse have returned to the team of Coach Alfred Gislasson and ambitions are
high. “We want to win all possible titles,” said Gislason.
The two-time EHF Champions League winners still have a squad with their own key factors such as
Thierry Omeyer, Filip Jicha, Momir Illic or Daniel Narcisse – and their pre-season preparation was
impressive, as they won all their 15 test matches. THW again are on the list of nearly every coach as
one of the big favourites for the VELUX EHF FINAL4.
Reale Ademar Leon (ESP)
After missing the Group Stage in the 2010/2011 season at the Wild Card Tournament stage Leon are
back in the field of the 24 best teams of Europe as the third-ranked team in the Spanish Asobal Liga.
New coach Isidoro Martinez, a former Spanish national team youth coach, hopes to reach the Last 16
despite their “terribly strong opponents” as he describes the other teams in his group.
The hopes are pinned on newcomer Adrien Di Panda (from Montpellier), as well as some new Spanish
signings. Leon’s best known player who departed was Croat Dennis Buntic who moved to Kielce. Leon,
who are well-known for their strength at home, participate for the tenth time in the EHF Champions
League.

VELUX EHF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2011/12 TEAM OVERVIEW
Pick Szeged (HUN)
Like last season major changes occurred in Szeged, as five newcomers arrived and nine players left or
have been loaned to other clubs including key players like David Katzirz, Gabor Herbert or Maxim
Butenko. In contrast Pick signed the Hungarian international Daniel Buday and talented youngster
Gabor Anscin.
The Hungarian runners-up are one of the most traditional participants in the VELUX EHF Champions
League; with this season their tenth appearance. Club manager Gyorgy Fekete hopes for another step
in this season’s competition, despite the top class opponents: “On the one hand I am not glad because
we are in a very strong group; on the other hand I am happy because it is very good that such famous
clubs will visit Szeged. Our goal is to qualify for the Last 16.”
RK Partizan Beograd
The Serbian champions are an exception in the field of the 24 participants of the VELUX EHF
Champions League Group Stage, as they are the only team with players exclusively from their home
country. In their Qualification Tournament they first beat AEK Athens closely in the semi-final, before
then going on to the Group Stage with victory over FC Porto Vitalis.
For Partizan, it is their fourth qualification for the EHF Champions League Group matches and their
first since the 2003/2004 season.

VELUX EHF FINAL4 2012 EVENT INFORMATION
The VELUX EHF FINAL4 is the culmination of the European club handball season. The two-day event
sees the best four men’s teams in Europe playing to decide the ultimate winners of the VELUX EHF
Champions League title.
Introduced in the 2009/10 season and so far played twice in the LAXNESS arena, Cologne, the decision
to create a new format for the final phase of the VELUX EHF Champions League was seen as crucial for
the growth of handball across Europe. The aim was to create a flagship event, one that could compete
on the international sports market and make the Europe’s leading club competition even more
attractive to partners and sponsors.
The aim of the new format was to create an event that set new standards in organisation and
entertainment not just for four games played over two days, but a true entertainment event in its own
right. Playing in one venue, in a major European city with a whole year for organisation, promotion
and marketing have been critical factors in the success of the event.
VELUX EHF FINAL4 2012 BRANDED TRAM
Three months after the successful VELUX EHF FINAL4 in May at the LANXESS arena in Cologne, the
first signs of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 2012 can be seen on the streets of Cologne.
The start of ticket sales on 7 September 2011 also sees the launch of the official VELUX EHF FINAL4
branded tram, which will travel throughout the cathedral city until June 2012.
With the branding of this modern tram, EHF Marketing GmbH have created an effective 200 square
metre advertising space in the City of Cologne, promoting the event throughout the year on its return
to the city for the third year in a row.
The advertising team who worked on the project are from Kölner Aussenwerbung and were made up of
four specialists, who have worked intensively to create a professional looking final product.
Areas such as joints, handles as well as doors and windows in particular required careful and
painstaking work. In total 350 man hours were required to complete the branding of the tram.
The tram will travel on Line 1 in Cologne, and directly to the tram station serving the LANXESS arena. It
is estimated that the tram will transport over 500,000 people and travel approximately 100,000 km
up to June 2012.
