COMPANIES NEWS IN BRIEF
DuPont agchem sales up 9% in
fourth quarter
DuPont notes. Growth is attributed to increased plantings and
share gains in North America, volume growth in Latin America
and success in Europe and Asia.
DuPont’s crop protection sales rose by 9% to $676 million
in the fourth quarter of 2011. The company saw growth from
all major product lines and in most regions, with the greatest
contribution coming from the US and Latin America. All regions
achieved double-digit sales growth in the second half of the
year, the company points out.
The fourth-quarter gains followed a 27% rise in crop protection
revenues in the third quarter (Agrow No 627, p 5). For the full
year, sales climbed by 16% to $2,900 million, including a 3%
decline from divested business. DuPont sold its non-mixture
diuron herbicide business to Makhteshim-Agan Industries during
the year (Agrow No 614, p 2).
Volume growth in 2011 was led by the insecticide,
chlorantraniliprole (trade-marked as Rynaxypyr), which recorded
strong gains towards the end of the year in Latin America and
Agriculture segment sales for 2011 were up by 16.8% to
$9,166 million. Volumes rose by 10%, prices by 6% and
portfolio changes added 1%. The business recorded an 18.1%
increase in pre-tax operating income (PTOI) to $1,527 million.
Excluding significant items, PTOI was up by 30.5% to $1,752
million, with margins of 19%.
Asia. Chlorantraniliprole sales rose by 45% to $580 million,
representing about 20% of total crop protection sales. As forecast
in December, DuPont’s insecticide sales exceeded $1,000 million
in 2011, a year earlier than expected (Agrow No 631, p 3).
DuPont’s second anthranilic diamide insecticide, cyantraniliprole
(trade-marked as Cyazypyr), is due to be introduced in the
second half of this year, with a peak revenue forecast of $250-
300 million. The combined sales of chlorantraniliprole and
cyantraniliprole are expected to top $1,000 million.
DuPont’s agriculture segment, which includes agrochemicals
and seed, recorded a 7.7% rise in fourth-quarter revenues to
$1,297 million. Volumes were up by 3% and prices by 5%.
The business recorded a pre-tax operating loss of $216 million
compared with a prior year loss of $185 million. Excluding
significant items, the losses were $116 million and $135
million, respectively. The improvement is attributed to higher
sales.
Among the significant items was a $100 million charge
related to damages claims over the turf herbicide, Imprelis
(aminocyclopyrachlor). The company incurred a $75 million
charge in the third quarter. The US EPA ordered a halt to
Imprelis sales last August after widespread damage reports
(Agrow No 622, p 16).
Pioneer . . .
Fourth-quarter sales by DuPont seed subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred
International rose by 7% to $621 million, which was partly
due to an “exceptional Latin America summer season”, the
company says. Latin American seed sales in the second half of
the year were up by more than 40%, driven by over 55% growth
in summer maize seed sales in Brazil. The business also saw
growth in the Philippines and Indonesia in the fourth quarter,
reflecting improved weather conditions and increased plantings.
Full-year seed sales grew by 17% to $6,300 million, along
with higher earnings and margins. The sales growth was well
balanced between North America and international operations,
sales spurt
United Phosphorus recorded an increase of 63.1% in
agrochemical sales to Rs 17,013 million ($333 million at the
current rate) in its third quarter ended December 31st 2011.
Agrochemicals accounted for some 91% of the company's
total sales of Rs 18,717 million ($367 million), which grew by
57.4%. Domestic sales accounted for a fifth of total revenues.
Profit after tax on all sales was up by 62.8% to Rs 1,340 million
($26 million).
Nine-month agrochemical sales grew by 43.7% to Rs 48,268
million ($946 million). Agrochemicals accounted for some 89%
of total sales of Rs 54,148 million ($1,061 million), which grew
by 43.7%. Profit after tax on all sales was up by 9.2% to Rs
3,725 million ($73 million). Domestic sales accounted for 27%
of total nine-month revenues. North America made up 21%,
Europe for 15% and the rest of the world accounted for the
remaining 37%.
United Phosphorus recorded an agrochemical sales increase of
9% to Rs 52,080 million ($1,020 million) in the financial year
ended March 31st 2011 (Agrow No 616, p 3).
Rallis’ Q3 sales up 19%
Rallis India recorded an 18.6% increase in revenues to Rs
3,178.6 million ($62.3 million at the current rate) in its third
quarter ended December 31st 2011. Sales were boosted by the
acquisition of the Indian agricultural biotechnology company,
Metahelix Life Sciences, in December 2010 (Agrow No 606,
p 5). Hence, they are not comparable with the results of the
previous year, the company says.
Net profit for the quarter, however, fell by over 77% to Rs 76.6
million. Profit calculations included a non-recurring charge of Rs
242.4 million on account of costs relating to the shutdown of its
manufacturing facility at Turbhe and a net foreign exchange loss
of Rs 82.1 million.
Nine-month revenues rose by over a quarter to Rs 10,395.1
million. Net profit was down by 16.7% to Rs 893 million.
The company says that farm productivity was impacted despite
increased acreages for wheat and rice because of erratic
monsoon rainfall.
Cheminova’s 2011 revenues up
10%
Cheminova has recorded revenues of just under DKK 5,800
million ($1,010 million at the current rate) in 2011, reveal
unaudited preliminary figures. That translates into an increase of
10.4% on the previous year (Agrow No 613, pp 4-5). Earnings
before interest and tax (EBIT) touched DKK 320 million ($56
million), while the EBITDA margin was around 8.5%.
The results are in line with its previously forecast revenues of
DKK 5,800 million, an EBITDA margin of 8-10% and EBIT in
the range of DKK 300-400 million ($52-70 million – Agrow
No 628, p 5). The only deviation was in the cash flow from
operating activities of approximately DKK 180 million ($31
million), which is lower than the expectation of over DKK 336
million ($59 million).
The company highlights problems such as a serious drought
in Texas, considerable difficulties experienced by German
subsidiary Stähler, and negative currency effects. But earnings
received a boost from positive developments in Latin America
towards the end of the year. Higher receivables negatively
affected the cash flow from operating activities. Cheminova’s
results for 2011 and guidance for 2012 are due to be issued on
March 14th.
Excel Crop Care up 8% in Q3
Indian agrochemical company Excel Crop Care (Mumbai) was
able to stem the decline suffered in the first two quarters of its
current fiscal year by recording an 8.4% rise in revenues to Rs
1,669.8 million ($32.7 million at the current rate) in its third
quarter ended December 31st 2011. The company was forced
to suspend production and sales of the insecticide/acaricide,
endosulfan, by an Indian Supreme Court ruling in May (Agrow
No 616, p 23). The active ingredient normally accounted for
a third of sales and the loss of the endosulfan business is
adversely impacting performance, the company says. After a
Court order in September allowing the export of existing stock of
the active ingredient (Agrow No 626, p 23), Excel was able to
export 737 tonnes, worth Rs 203.2 million ($4 million), in its
third quarter.
Net profit, however, fell by 85.4% to Rs 10.9 million
($200,000). Excel continues to maintain a provision of Rs 163
million ($3.2 million) for inventory items related to endosulfan.
Nine-month sales were down 14.3% to Rs 5,182.2 million
($101.5 million), while net profit dropped by almost two-thirds
to Rs 157 million ($3.1 million).
Excel will export 416 kilolitres of formulated product, worth
about Rs 7,200 million ($141 million), in the current quarter
following a Court ruling in December allowing the export of
existing stock of endosulfan formulations held by manufacturers
(Agrow No 631, p 19). To the extent export orders are received
in future, the remaining stock of formulations will be exported,
the company says.
MEETING
AGROW | No 564 | March 27th 2009
Europe AGROW | No 633 | February 8th 2012
EU targets extra ais for water
quality rules
The European Commission has proposed the addition of six
agrochemical active ingredients and one non-crop biocide to
chemicals that are subject to water pollution controls. The
pesticides are: the herbicides, aclonifen and bifenox; the
insecticide, cypermethrin; the acaricide, dicofol; the insecticide,
heptachlor; and the fungicide, quinoxyfen. The biocide is the
insecticide/acaricide, dichlorvos. The move follows a review
of some 2,000 chemicals to see if they should be included in
those regulated by the EU water framework Directive (2000/60 –
Agrow No 603, p 11).
The ais are proposed as “priority substances”, which would
make them subject to maximum concentration levels in water.
Three of the ais, dicofol, quinoxyfen and heptachlor, are
proposed as “priority hazardous substances”, which would
place them under stronger measures to phase them out or stop
releases to water within 20 years.
Of the three, only quinoxyfen is approved in the EU. Its
use was authorised under the EU agrochemical registration
Directive (91/414) in 2004 and is used mainly on cereals and
grapevines. Dicofol has already been phased out, following a
decision in 2008 against re-registration, but there may possibly
be some residual use, the Commission says. Heptachlor has
not been marketed in the EU for many years and is covered by
international agreements that ban persistent organic pollutants
(POPs). However, secondary emissions to water are possible, the
Commission notes.
EU agrochemical approval was granted to aclonifen and
bifenox in 2009, and cypermethrin in 2006. An application for
dichlorvos approval under the EU biocidal products Directive
(98/8) is currently under assessment. The ai failed to gain
agrochemical re-registration in 2007.
The Commission also proposes to change the classification of
some ais already on the priority substances list. This includes
the herbicide, trifluralin, which would become a priority
hazardous substance. Decisions against re-registration of the
ai were taken in 2007 and 2010, although Dow AgroSciences
continues to pursue legal action to reinstate its approval (Agrow
No 630, p 7).
The review focused on substances that had been identified
under agrochemical or biocide legislation as being of potential
concern to the aquatic environment. The designation of priority
substances was “based essentially on their hazardousness and
their presence in the aquatic environment”, the Commission
says.
In addition to the seven proposed pesticides, two more
biocides, the preservative, terbutryn, and the antifouling agent,
cybutryne, together with a further six industrial chemicals and
pharmaceuticals are also proposed as new additions. “The 15
additional chemicals need to be monitored and controlled to
ensure they don’t pose a risk to the environment or human
health,” says EU Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik.
The Directive already covers a total of 33 substances, including
11 pesticides.
The proposals require approval from EU Ministers and the
European Parliament. The changes would take the form
of amendments to both Directive 2000/60 and the EU
environmental quality standards (EQS) in water Directive
2008/105, which sets the concentration limits for specific
substances. EU member states would have to ensure that
the additional ais are monitored and their EQS met by 2021.
However, there are provisions under Directive 2000/60 for
extending this period in specific cases.
Actual measures for meeting the EQS are not included in the
proposal, as it is expected that existing agrochemical legislation
will reduce the emissions of many of the ais. Inclusion of the
ais in the list means that monitoring data would be obtained
to provide feedback on the effectiveness of existing legislation,
the Commission notes. However, if additional local or national
measures prove insufficient to meet the EQS, then additional EU
measures may need to be considered, it adds.
“watch list” . . .
Other elements of the proposal include a system for gathering
information on other pollutants that might need to be controlled
in the future at EU level. The establishment of a “watch list”
would aim to gather monitoring data EU-wide over one or two
years for substances of possible concern. The information would
support decision-making on the risks posed by these substances
and would be used in future reviews of the priority substances
list. No EU standards or phase-out obligations would apply to
substances on the watch list, and neither would they have to be
monitored as widely as priority substances.
The Commission also proposes improvements to the monitoring
and reporting of chemical pollutants in water. In particular, there
are provisions for coping with persistent, bioaccumulative and
toxic substances that may remain in the environment for long
periods, even though their use in the EU has ceased. In cases
where there is little a member state can do to speed up the
reduction in concentrations of these substances, the proposal
would allow them to reduce the monitoring effort to less
frequent periods.
impact assessment . . .
An impact assessment carried out when drawing up the proposals
concluded that the expected benefits, in terms of water quality
and environmental and human health, would outweigh the costs,
the Commission maintains. As no specific reduction actions
are proposed, member states can select the most cost-effective
measures that best fit their local situation. Since most of the ais
would not be designated priority hazardous substances, there would
be no need to find substitutes for them. Those designated priority
hazardous substances “are already, or will probably soon become,
subject to controls under other legislation”, the Commission states.
In most cases, substitutes are likely to be developed within the 20year
phase-out timeframe. While there would be some additional
monitoring costs, they would be “minor in relation to the existing
overall monitoring costs”, the Commission believes.
South American region seeks
flexible agchem approvals
The South American customs union the Andean Community’s
(CAN) pesticides committee, the Cotasa de Plaguicidas, wants
to “rationalise and make flexible” the harmonised agricultural
use pesticide agrochemical registration process. CAN member
state representatives from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru
met late last year at the 120th Cotasa reunion, and produced
three joint initiatives.
They agreed to adopt amendments to Resolution 630
covering the data required from an applicant for a product
registration, and what modifications a registrant can request
to a registration. Resolution 630 of 2002, along with Decision
436 of 1998, set the harmonised pesticide registration regime
in the union (Agrow No 422, p 21).
The amendments would establish requirements for the
following policies: the processing of new authorisations of
an approved pesticide under a different name; defining the
conditions for adding manufacturers, formulators and the
countries of origin for an approved pesticide; and regulating
the requirements for raising the application rate of an approved
pesticide and re-setting its toxicological category.
The first of those is designed to allow the agrochemical
industry to develop strategies for supplying the same product
with different names in separate niche markets and different
trading conditions, while the second would aim to facilitate
and expand product supplies in domestic markets, while
responding to moves in international markets, the Cotasa
explains.
The meeting also considered the flexibility in the requirements
for the registration of active ingredients that are under patent
or data protection.
The Cotasa called on the secretary general of the CAN to
process the amendments of the Resolution and Decision as
soon as possible to improve member states’ competitiveness.
It further called for member states to evaluate the possibility
of establishing harmonised procedures and requirements
for the registration and control of plant growth regulators
and adjuvants, including their import, export, manufacture,
formulation, packaging and distribution.
The meeting supported three proposals, which it decided “to
move on in the short to medium term”. The first concerns
a project for setting maximum residue limits (MRLs) on
four “low toxicity” pesticides. The Cotasa hopes to gain the
support of the WTO and the USDA on the project, which covers
Syngenta’s fungicide, azoxystrobin, and three insecticides:
DuPont’s chlorantraniliprole, Dow AgroSciences’ spinetoram
and Sumitomo Chemical’s pyriproxyfen.
It would not only grant access to significant international
resources but also lead to the inclusion of Codex Alimentarius
MRLs that can subsequently be extrapolated to more than 20
tropical plants of the region, facilitating exports particularly to
the EU, the Conasa notes.
The second supported proposal was to take part in the second
global minor-use summit (GMUS-II), which takes place this
month and to which Colombia was invited as a member of the
advisory committee. The summit is of particular significance
to CAN member states in facilitating internationally recognised
approvals of products for use on minor crops. The last adopted
proposal was for the creation of a network of laboratories across
the region for the control of pesticide formulations and residues.
Earlier in 2011, the secretary general of the CAN launched a
project in association with the FAO to improve the control of
pesticide use in the region. The secretary general accepted that
highly toxic pesticides continued to be used in the region. The
project was scheduled to last two years, and would include the
establishment of the regional laboratory network among other
capacity raising goals of a technically improved registration
system and post-registration controls.
Bayer debuts fluopyram in Turkey
Bayer CropScience has debuted a fungicide formulation based
on its new active ingredient, fluopyram, in Turkey. The country
granted registration late last year, and it is the first confirmed
product approval for a fungicide based on the active ingredient.
Luna Experience (fluopyram 200 g/litre + tebuconazole 200
g/litre) is a suspension concentrate formulation for use on
nine crops, including apples for the control of scab (Venturia
inaequalis), on grapevines against powdery mildew (Uncinula
necator), cherries against brown rot (Monilinia laxa), and
tomatoes, aubergines and peppers for the control of tomato
powdery mildew (Leveillula taurica). It is safe for bees and nontarget
organisms, Bayer notes.
Fluopyram comes from the pyridylethylbenzamide family of
fungicides. It is a succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI).
Fluopyram was developed for use on over 70 crops, and was
unveiled in 2009 (Agrow No 567, p 23). Recommended
application rates for the ai range from 0.2-0.5 litres/ha.
The US EPA has recently proposed the registration of five
fungicide products based on fluopyram, some in formulation
with other ais, including Luna Experience (Agrow No 631, p
20). The EU registration application for the new fungicide was
declared complete in 2009, and first member state approvals
were expected by 2011 for use on grapevines and strawberries
(Agrow No 567, p 23).
BASF brands new dicamba
Engenia
BASF plans to apply for US approval for a new formulation of
the herbicide, dicamba, under the Engenia brand this year. It is
intended for use on Monsanto’s genetically modified dicambatolerant
soybeans. “Engenia will be an important new tool for
soybean growers battling herbicide-resistant weeds, like Palmer
amaranth, waterhemp [both Amaranthus spp] and marestail
[Conyza canadensis],” says Paul Rea, vice-president of BASF’s
US crop protection business. Research on advances in dicamba
formulations and the use of the herbicide on dicamba-tolerant
crops was presented at the US Southern Weed Science Society
annual meeting last month.
BASF and Monsanto have been collaborating on the
development of dicamba formulations for use on GM soybeans
for the past three years. The companies entered into a licensing
agreement covering the commercialisation of the herbicides last
year (Agrow No 612, p 2).
BASF expects to receive US approval for Engenia prior to the
commercialisation of Monsanto’s Genuity Roundup Ready 2
Yield dicamba-tolerant soybeans. Its first stacks of dicamba
tolerance and glyphosate tolerance are being lined up for
on-farm testing in 2013, with a commercial launch planned
for 2014 (Agrow No 631, p 4). Monsanto is also developing
dicamba-tolerant cotton, maize and canola.
JANUARY 2011
The US Patent and Trademark Office in December published
a total of 53 patent applications from 28 different assignees,
covering genetically modified plants and methods of producing
them.
Two were for input traits, one of which, from Bayer
CropScience, concerned a chimeric gene construct conferring
resistance to several different classes of herbicides. There were
27 applications published that concerned output traits, including
15 claiming improvements to stress tolerance or increasing
yield. Methods of altering the content of GM plants accounted
for nine applications. These included a pair of filings from BASF
concerning the production of arachidonic and eicosapentaenoic
acid in plants using desaturase enzymes derived from algae.
Three applications concerned methods of altering plant
phenotypes.
A further 24 applications concerned other aspects of
biotechnology, such as newly identified promoters, expressed
sequence tags or transformation methods. The latter included
two filings from Dow AgroSciences for nanoparticle-mediated
transformation methods.
DuPont, including seed subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred
International, dominated the field with 15 applications published.
Its closest rival was Monsanto, which had six filings published.
BASF, Ceres and Dow each had three applications published.
Bayer and the US Michigan State University each had two
applications published.
New model confirms refuge values
Researchers from the US University of Arizona (Tucson) and
others have developed a new method to assess the effectiveness
of refuge strategies in delaying the emergence of pests resistant
to insecticides. The method is based on results of an eightyear,
large-scale study involving 84 cotton fields in central
Arizona and takes into account variations in surrounding crop
types and distances between treated fields and refuge areas.
The study looked at the effects of the insecticide, pyriproxyfen,
on whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci). Data from the first four years
of the study were used to develop spatially explicit statistical
models that identified the crops affecting local variations in pest
resistance and the maximum range of any effects.
The researchers found that annual spatial variation in resistance
was not affected by refuges in near-by melon or alfalfa crops.
Resistance was negatively associated with the area of cotton
refuges and positively associated with the area of cotton
treated with pyriproxyfen. The model was validated over the
following four years by predicting resistance at the landscape
level. Results confirmed that the provision of refuges for cotton
delayed the evolution of resistance and fields treated with
pyriproxyfen accelerated the evolution of resistance. The new
method and framework could help refine the refuge strategy for
many key COMPANIES pests, the NEWS researchers ROUND-UP suggest.
Details of the study have been published in the US journal,
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Study finds budworms cause of
soybean GBS
EUROPE NEWS ROUND-UP
Researchers from a trio of US universities have identified insect
pests as the cause of green bean syndrome (GBS) in soybeans,
rather than micro-organisms as previously believed. Pods on
soybeans affected by GBS do not mature at the same rate on the
AMERICAS NEWS ROUND-UP
plant, so that half the pods on a plant may be ready for harvest
while the rest are still green, the researchers note. The syndrome
rarely affects an entire field, but is usually confined to small
areas within it.
AUSTRALASIA NEWS IN BRIEF
Field observations over the past two years indicate that
budworms (Helicoverpa zea) are the underlying cause of GBS,
the researchers say. Their findings suggest that high levels of
seed abortions and de-podding, likely due to budworm feeding,
cause PEOPLE physiological changes in plants that result in delayed and
uneven maturity of pods.
The researchers also cite studies in which soybeans were either
deliberately MEETINGS de-podded or were exposed to heavy infestations of
pod-feeding stink bugs or other pests. The results show that any
stress that interferes with pod setting, filling or retention can
cause uneven pod maturity.
In addition, DNA sequencing analysis of plants affected with
GBS did ASIA/AUSTRALASIA/AFRICA not detect any trace of known NEWS IN soybean BRIEF pathogens such
as phytoplasma or viruses.
WORLD NEWS IN BRIEF
Priming plant defences has
heritable benefits
Two research projects conducted by current and former members
of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR)
in Plant Survival have shown that priming a plant’s defences
also increases disease or pest resistance in its descendants.
In one study, researchers from the Swiss University of Neuchatel
treated thale cress plants with either b-amino-butyric acid or an
avirulent isolate of Pseudomonas spp bacteria to prime defence
responses. Both substances are harmless to the environment
and are simple to apply, the researchers note. The descendants
of primed plants reacted more quickly and strongly when
challenged with a mildew vector and pathogenic bacteria.
Transcription rates of defence-related genes were also increased
more rapidly.
Similar trans-generational beneficial effects, this time against
herbivorous pests, were found in a second project using thale
cress and tomatoes. In this case, plants were primed using
either methyl jasmonate or by exposing the parent plants to
caterpillar feeding. The results showed that caterpillars feeding
on plants whose parents had been primed developed much
slower and their size was reduced by half.
In both cases, positive trans-generational effects were
maintained for two generations. However, plant defence
responses returned to normal levels if second-generation plants
were not also primed. The phenomenon helps plants adapt to a
hostile environment, the researchers believe.
promising strategy . . .
OVERMATTER
These characteristics make the application of defence elicitors a
very promising strategy for sustainable agriculture that respects
the environment, the researchers note. Exploiting the effects
of trans-generational priming could help reduce pesticide use,
they add. By reducing the amount of pesticides applied in
fields, plants end up being more exposed to insect wounds.
Paradoxically, these wounds reinforce the plant’s resistance,
which will then be transmitted to the next generation, they add.
Details of the studies have been published in the journal Plant
Physiology.
