COMPANIES NEWS IN BRIEF
DuPont agchem sales up 9% in
fourth quarter
DuPont notes. Growth is attributed to increased plantings and
share gains in North America, volume growth in Latin America
and success in Europe and Asia.
DuPont’s crop protection sales rose by 9% to $676 million
in the fourth quarter of 2011. The company saw growth from
all major product lines and in most regions, with the greatest
contribution coming from the US and Latin America. All regions
achieved double-digit sales growth in the second half of the
year, the company points out.
The fourth-quarter gains followed a 27% rise in crop protection
revenues in the third quarter (Agrow No 627, p 5). For the full
year, sales climbed by 16% to $2,900 million, including a 3%
decline from divested business. DuPont sold its non-mixture
diuron herbicide business to Makhteshim-Agan Industries during
the year (Agrow No 614, p 2).
Volume growth in 2011 was led by the insecticide,
chlorantraniliprole (trade-marked as Rynaxypyr), which recorded
strong gains towards the end of the year in Latin America and
Agriculture segment sales for 2011 were up by 16.8% to
$9,166 million. Volumes rose by 10%, prices by 6% and
portfolio changes added 1%. The business recorded an 18.1%
increase in pre-tax operating income (PTOI) to $1,527 million.
Excluding significant items, PTOI was up by 30.5% to $1,752
million, with margins of 19%.
Asia. Chlorantraniliprole sales rose by 45% to $580 million,
representing about 20% of total crop protection sales. As forecast
in December, DuPont’s insecticide sales exceeded $1,000 million
in 2011, a year earlier than expected (Agrow No 631, p 3).
DuPont’s second anthranilic diamide insecticide, cyantraniliprole
(trade-marked as Cyazypyr), is due to be introduced in the
second half of this year, with a peak revenue forecast of $250-
300 million. The combined sales of chlorantraniliprole and
cyantraniliprole are expected to top $1,000 million.
DuPont’s agriculture segment, which includes agrochemicals
and seed, recorded a 7.7% rise in fourth-quarter revenues to
$1,297 million. Volumes were up by 3% and prices by 5%.
The business recorded a pre-tax operating loss of $216 million
compared with a prior year loss of $185 million. Excluding
significant items, the losses were $116 million and $135
million, respectively. The improvement is attributed to higher
sales.
Among the significant items was a $100 million charge
related to damages claims over the turf herbicide, Imprelis
(aminocyclopyrachlor). The company incurred a $75 million
charge in the third quarter. The US EPA ordered a halt to
Imprelis sales last August after widespread damage reports
(Agrow No 622, p 16).
Pioneer . . .
Fourth-quarter sales by DuPont seed subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred
International rose by 7% to $621 million, which was partly
due to an “exceptional Latin America summer season”, the
company says. Latin American seed sales in the second half of
the year were up by more than 40%, driven by over 55% growth
in summer maize seed sales in Brazil. The business also saw
growth in the Philippines and Indonesia in the fourth quarter,
reflecting improved weather conditions and increased plantings.
Full-year seed sales grew by 17% to $6,300 million, along
with higher earnings and margins. The sales growth was well
balanced between North America and international operations,
