Latin America boosts Dow Q4<br />
Dow AgroSciences’ agrochemical <strong>sales</strong> in the fourth quarter of<br />
2011 were boosted by a 17% increase in revenues in its Latin<br />
America COMPANIES region. The NEWS business ROUND-UP contributed to record fourthquarter<br />
<strong>and</strong> full-year <strong>sales</strong> for parent company Dow Chemical’s<br />
agricultural sciences segment <strong>and</strong> record fourth-quarter<br />
earnings, the company points out.<br />
PRODUCTS NEWS IN BRIEF<br />
The agricultural sciences business posted a 5.3% rise in<br />
revenues in the fourth quarter to $1,344 million. Volumes were<br />
up by 1% <strong>and</strong> prices by 4%. Earnings before interest, tax,<br />
depreciation <strong>and</strong> amortisation (EBITDA) more than doubled to<br />

$145 million. A strong growing season in Latin America boosted<br />
global <strong>sales</strong> of seed, traits <strong>and</strong> oils by 22%.<br />
Dow’s fourth-quarter gains followed a 20% rise in agricultural<br />
sciences revenues in the first nine months of the year (<strong>Agrow</strong><br />
No 627, AMERICAS p 6). For NEWS the ROUND-UP year as a whole, <strong>sales</strong> grew by 16.1% to<br />
$5,655 million. Volumes were up by 11% <strong>and</strong> prices by 5%.<br />
EBITDA grew by 42.7% to $913 million.<br />
Sales of “<strong>new</strong>” agrochemicals rose by over 20% during 2011.<br />
AUSTRALASIA NEWS IN BRIEF<br />
With more product launches planned for 2012, including the<br />
insecticide, sulfoxaflor, the company is on track to exceed its<br />
target of $800 million in annual <strong>sales</strong> of such products by<br />
2013, says Dow Chemical chairman <strong>and</strong> CEO Andrew Liveris.<br />
The company PEOPLE received its first approval of sulfoxaflor in South<br />
Korea in November, with a launch planned for the first half of<br />
2012 (<strong>Agrow</strong> No 629, p 25).<br />
Dow’s MEETING <strong>sales</strong> of seed, traits <strong>and</strong> oils grew by 35% last year, with<br />
“significant” gains in key crops such as maize <strong>and</strong> cotton. It saw<br />
continued strong dem<strong>and</strong> for genetically modified insect-resistant<br />
<strong>and</strong> herbicide-tolerant SmartStax maize in North America <strong>and</strong><br />
increased adoption of Herculex maize in the Americas. The<br />

business’ EBITDA margin of 16% in 2011 is said to reflect<br />

The company forecasts “double-digit” growth for its seed <strong>and</strong> trait<br />
