of that problem. “Skeptics calmly bypass this
reality and proceed as if they were spectators
observing a phenomenon, when in reality
they are part of the phenomenon. We are
not merely observers of the reality of evil. We
are involved in it beyond any mere academic
discussion,” he points out.
In your book Swaraj, which I think every
Indian school should include in its curriculum,
your observations are insightful, you write: “Lord
Metcalf, the Governor General of India, wrote
in 1830 that the foundation of this country is its
village sabhas. The people of the village meet
at a common point and take joint decisions. In
1860 the British brought in a law that destroyed
the village sabhas because they had understood
that until this foundation is destabilized, they
could not rule India effectively.
“A law was enacted to bring in the collector
raj. All rights that the people had or the village
sabhas had, were
snatched from
them and given
to the British
collectors. Earlier,
the villagers ran
the establishment
for irrigation which
the British started
to control through
an irrigation
department. The
villagers earlier
establishment
British formed
department. All
areas of life and
British through
Have you forgotten India or do you long to return?
Or may be you plan to leave its shores. Wherever you
are in the world, if you are of Indian origin Desh Aur
Diaspora will tug at your heart strings and give you
food for thought.
A permanent exit from India is difficult for most
Indians. But whatever your plans, Desh Aur Diaspora
has useful insights and a provocative fusion of
challenge and hope in its nearly two decade collection
of thought provoking editorials from The International Indian magazine.
Desh Aur Diaspora is a nostalgic yet unyielding take on heart and homeland
that demands more of all Indians.
Trials and dilemmas that confront people in India and the Diaspora may
be similar, but they are not the same. Isolation overseas can intensify the
inevitable gamut of hardships: extended family heartaches and expectations,
marriage, raising children, elder care and respect, divorce, racism, job
discrimination, uprootedness, friendships, community, identity, finding a
spiritual anchor etc.
Desh Aur Diaspora addresses many of these issues.
In the battle for hearts and minds, ‘ideas have consequences’ and Desh Aur
Diaspora audaciously tackles self imposed personal, social, political and
spiritual roadblocks that people unthinkingly keep or acquire, often creating
impediments to success, objectivity, understanding and real freedom.
Desh Aur Diaspora engages you with inspiring concepts, inviting debate to
shape a well rounded worldview that combines a passionate love of country
with a determination to excel and make a difference at home and abroad.
“The Collector” or “Burra Sahib”.
“It is bad luck that though we got
independence in 1947, yet the rights of the
people were not returned. The rights of village
sabhas were not returned. We replaced the
British Collector with an Indian. We kept all
the paraphernalia of the British government as
it is - its arrogance, its unapproachability, its
mentality of being
a ruler. The Indian
Collector, nay a
bureaucrat, is still
the Burra sahib.”
Indeed.
Indians were
the slaves of
the goras then...
Indians are slaves of
goondas now.
