as schneider reflects <strong>on</strong> his many years <strong>of</strong> teaching, he relates that<br />

students have always been first and foremost, and all <strong>of</strong> his teaching<br />

decisi<strong>on</strong>s were formed around that priority. students awarded him<br />

the Justice robert o. lukowsky award five times in recogniti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> his<br />

outstanding teaching performance. he believes these are the most<br />

significant h<strong>on</strong>ors he received during his teaching career.<br />

schneider has forged many friendships am<strong>on</strong>g his fellow teachers<br />

during his time at chase. “fred schneider has been my colleague and<br />

friend for over 30 years,” says pr<strong>of</strong>essor caryl yzenbaard, a l<strong>on</strong>gtime<br />

associate <strong>of</strong> schneider. “our relati<strong>on</strong>ship is and has been a w<strong>on</strong>derful<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>al and pers<strong>on</strong>al pleasure.”<br />

dean dennis h<strong>on</strong>abach had the privilege <strong>of</strong> working with<br />

schneider in his final years <strong>of</strong> teaching. “fred schneider was the<br />

c<strong>on</strong>summate law pr<strong>of</strong>essor,” h<strong>on</strong>abach says. “he cared passi<strong>on</strong>ately<br />

about the subject matter he taught. he cared passi<strong>on</strong>ately about<br />

our law school. and, most importantly, he cared passi<strong>on</strong>ately about<br />

his students. fortunately, he will stay a part <strong>of</strong> our community as a<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor emeritus, and, i hope, c<strong>on</strong>tinue to teach and mentor our<br />

students.”<br />

schneider’s students likewise remember him with f<strong>on</strong>dness. “he<br />

taught with fervor and passi<strong>on</strong>,” according to third-year law student<br />

Katrina Bruce. “pr<strong>of</strong>essor schneider was always encouraging and quite<br />

sincere when it came to assisting students. he was a jewel to chase,”<br />

she believes.<br />

schneider and his wife, Karen, recently celebrated their 45th<br />

wedding anniversary, and he feels blessed with their three children and<br />

11 grandchildren. he looks forward to spending his newly free time<br />

with his family. “our two s<strong>on</strong>s are eagle scouts; now <strong>on</strong>e grands<strong>on</strong> is<br />

working <strong>on</strong> eagle rank,” he proudly relates. he further reflects, “it is<br />

good to watch grandchildren in recitals, dance performances and sport<br />

events, as we did for our own children.” he and his wife also plan some<br />

travel, beginning with a trip to alaska taken this past summer. “i hope<br />

to enjoy hobbies i have put <strong>of</strong>f for too l<strong>on</strong>g,” he says. he looks forward<br />

to catching up <strong>on</strong> n<strong>on</strong>-legal reading. “the outdoors beck<strong>on</strong>s, too,” he<br />

declares. he also enjoys amateur radio and photography.<br />
