Welcome to the Escape!
Welcome to the third annual Faerie Escape! We’ve had
otherworldly fun with the first two, and now we’re taking
the enchantment even beyond the Escape with a showing
of Stardust at the Plaza Theater, a continuing series of Faerie
Escape meetups around Atlanta, and even a collection
of short stories in Mercury Retrograde Press’ 2012 Faerie
Escape Chapbook. Thus the theme for this year’s Escape:
Spreading the Magic.
As we noted at the first Escape, the Fae present us with the
opportunity to fly beyond
the mundane, to stretch our wings and reach for distant
points of brilliance. Creatures from Faerie inspire our art,
our dance, our prose, our music, our poetry, and even the
way we interact with the world. This year we plan to take
that inspiration well beyond this weekend and help it escape
out into the world itself, whether it be through our
stories, our art, or even the unique ways we live our lives.
We know many of you will have a favorite part of the Escape,
be it the marketplace with its many glittering attractions,
the workshops where you lose yourself in creation,
the discussions that will open you to new ways of seeing
our world, or some unexpected encounter with another
member of the Escape. Whatever it is you find most appealing,
we hope you’ll give other aspects a try as well, and
be ready to continue them well beyond here.
Have fun spreading the magic!
Workshops
The Escape offers you numerous opportunities to express
yourself creatively, and we hope you will take advantage of
our workshops to try your hand at wing making, dance,
costuming, mask making, faerie house creation, and art.
Some of these workshops, like wing making, mask making
and faerie house creation, require more than a few
bits and pieces, and we are collecting a materials fee to
reimburse our presenters who supplied these. More information
about this can be found at the registration desk.
In addition, we have crafting nooks in the workshop
rooms where you can create as you see fit. The workshops
have precedence, so please work quietly or
come back later if they need the space. Volunteers
should be available to answer your
questions about these creation stations,
but if you have any doubts, ask for more
information at the registration desk. There
are trash cans available, so please clean up
when you are done, and let our volunteers or
the hotel staff know if the trash cans get full.
Our Story
The Mythic Imagination Institute, one of
the Escape’s sponsors, has long promoted
the fact that “Every life is a story, and a story
can change the world.” The entire Escape
is filled with stories, but we hope you will join us
for some of the key ones. Expect the story to start at
the Gathering of the Court Friday night, continue in
the Grand Ball Saturday night, and conclude at the
Closing of the Court.
Gaming
The Chardonnay room is open all weekend for gaming.
Feel free to stop by as you please to try out any games that
are there or bring your own. In addition, we have a sneak
preview of Hi-Rez Studios upcoming mythology-based
massively multiplayer game SMITE and some scheduled
games as well.
Saturday, June 16, 1 pm
Join us at Faerie Haven, a card game from Mushroom Circle
Games. Each player tries to build havens using Heroes
and Items. The other players use events and attacks to destroy
the havens of opponents. The player with the most
points at the end of the game wins. The “personages” featured
in the game come from Arthurian, Celtic, Roman,
Nordic and Greek mythology as well as Faerie lore.
of human ones. Join Emory adjunct law professor Courtney
Perry and intellectual property attorney Blake Sorensen
Lindsay Archer From an early age, Lindsay
declared that she was going
to be an artist. After
seeing her grandfather’s
regret at not pursuing his
talent, she vowed to use
her gift. In elementary
school she made copies
of her early work with her
father’s xerox copier and
sold them for change to buy ice cream. During her high
school years she continued her entrepreneurial endeavors
by scultping figurines, painting T-Shirts, and painting
items to sell at Pow Wows.
In 1999 Lindsay graduated with honors from The Art
Institute of Atlanta and returned to her hometown
in search of work, where she worked for an advertising
company known as Third Wave Digital until she took a
teaching position at Macon Technical College where she
taught art and originated their 3D program.
After observing successful artists, Lindsay took the leap to
professional full time artist in the fall of 2003. Traveling
to conventions around the country selling and promoting
her artwork along with the work of other artists, Lindsay
emerged on the fantasy/scifi scene. In 2004 Lindsay was
one of Larry Elmore’s first art camp students, and with
what she learned it took her artwork to the next level.
Not long afterward, Lindsay began illustrating for Margaret
Weis Productions, and her artwork was featured
in role-playing such as the Serenity RPG, DragonLance
RPG, Battlestar Galactica RPG, and the Supernatural RPG.
Through the years she has been prolific in both illustration
and her own fantasy artwork.
Charlotte Babb
Charlotte has been writing
since she was four, making
up stories about fairies in
the back yard and aliens in
the forest. She has studied
the folk stories of many
cultures and wonders what
happened to ours. Where
the stories are for people over 20 who have survived marriage,
divorce, child-raising, education, bankruptcy, and
widowhood? She loves Fractured Fairy Tales and writes
them for your enjoyment.
Bill Bridges
Bill Bridges is a role-playing
game developer and
author. He was one of
the primary White Wolf
original developer (along
with many others who
contributed) to Werewolf:
The Apocalypse from 1992
to 1995. He was extremely
influential in turning the
idea that werewolves could
be something besides cursed humans, and instead be
spiritual warriors defending the environment from inevitable
impending doom. This idea has since been echoed
in some of popular contemporary novel series in which
werewolves can breed new werewolves in addition to creating
new ones by biting them. While previous examples of
this exist, his contributions help broaden the idea of what
a werewolf could be or entail as accepted by the reading
audience. He was a part of the original Mage: The Ascension
design team. He has numerous writing credits encompassing
most of the second edition World of Darkness games,
and helped design the Werewolfcollectible card game,
Rage.
After years with White Wolf, he joined Holistic Design
(HDI) where he co-created Fading Suns with Andrew
Greenberg. Bridge’s most measurable contributions to
the game were his “Alustro’s Journals” a series of Marco
Polo style travel logs featuring the travels of the pilgrim
Alustro and his companions as they moved from one area
to another. He was also the primary author of the War in
the Heaven’s series which revealed the secrets of the Symbiots
and the Vau respectively. Minor literary similarities
can be seen between the pro-environmental Symbiots and
the ‘defenders of Gaia’ among the Garou in Werewolf the
Apocalypse. Another common theme includes the deeper
mysteries implied in the setting over the battle of fate and
free will (in Fading Suns this manifest through the proxy
war the Ananaki fight through Vau influence whereas in
Werewolf: The Apocalypse it shows itself through the conflict
between arch-spirits Wyrm, Weaver and Wyld. His
work for other companies include writing for Chaosium,
and development for the Star Trek: The Next Generation
and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine role-playing games for Last
Unicorn Games. He has also worked on computer games,
notably Emperor of the Fading Suns for Segasoft (based on
the Fading Suns RPG), co-writing scripts for Viacom’s “interactive
horror movie”Dracula Unleashed, and more Star
Trek work on Starfleet Academy for Interplay.
Bridges moved back to White Wolf in 2002, replacing Jess
Heinig as the developer for the revised edition of Mage:
The Ascension, seeing the game he created through
to its conclusion in the Time of Judgment. For the
6
new World of Darkness, he worked on the new core rules
and was a designer, author and developer on Mage: The
Awakening. He later moved on line edit Promethean: The
Created, which has won several awards.
Bridges also co-chairs the content committee for the biannual
myth based academic conference and performance
festival, Mythic Journeys. His published novels include The
Silver Crown and The Last Battle, both of which are set in
the Werewolf: The Apocalypse setting.
The Fables
The Fables are a
fantasy-character acting
troupe. They preform
every May at the
Tennessee Renaissance
Festival. They audition
in February and
then train for three months in preparation for the faire in
May. They learn to walk, talk, and act like a fairy. Their
main job at the faire is to entertain guests and make the
magic that is a fairy real for children. They are known for
their love of food, especially cheesecake. During the late
afternoon it is not unusual to find them napping in the
garden. Their director, Esther Cancasci, has been with
the Tennessee Renaissance Festival since 1997 and the
Fairy Director since 2001.
Honora Foah
Honora Foah is the President of Mythic Imagination
Institute and Creative Director of Visioneering International.
A pioneer of multi-disciplinary art, Ms Foah’s New York
based dance theatre company incorporated movement,
voice, music, food, art installation and projection. The
company was a grant recipient from the National Endowment
for the Arts.
After 10 years with the company, Ms Foah began studies
in Waldorf Education helping to found 3 schools. A
Masters degree from the University of North Carolina in
Dance and PhD studies in Education followed.
Ms Foah became Creative Director of Visioneering International
in 1990, designing many projects. Highlights
include chief designer and producer of two World’s Fair
pavilions for the United Nations (Genova, Italy; Taijon,
Korea), work for the Hayden Planetarium, installations
for Fernbank Science Museum and enormous video art
installations for Augusta Children’s Hospital and Children’s
Healthcare of Atlanta’s Emory Hospital.
7
She has created and collaborated on two notable performance
cycles, Water Murders with playwright Bradford Riley
and her own Recombinant DNA. A collaboration with
artist Amy Landesberg produced a full gallery show at the
Sandler-Hudson gallery in Atlanta.
In 2003, Ms Foah began work on Mythic Journeys, a performance
festival and conference of extraordinary scope.
Bringing together more than 150 presenters, speakers,
artists and performers, Mythic Journeys uses the great archetypal
stories, sacred traditions, folk wisdom and tales
as a ground from which new art in consonance with interdisciplinary
conversation can create a context for contemporary
events. Psychologists, scientists, poets, scholars,
politicians, business people, artists and musicians bring
their expertise and creativity to bear on the experiences
and issues of our time. It is an approach both deeply respectful
and knowledgeable of tradition, and iconoclastic,
recognizing, ‘You cannot solve a problem from the
same consciousness that created it. You must learn to see
the world anew.’ (Albert Einstein) The rich interaction
included many wise hearts and brilliant minds ranging
from poet Coleman Barks to Chief Jake Swamp, from
Deepak Chopra to Joyce Carol Oates, Lorin Hollander to
Sobonfu Some, James Hillman to Chungliang Al Huang.
In 2005, Mythic Journeys was the subject of a two-hour
documentary on National Public Radio.
Mythic Journeys is a production of the Mythic Imagination
Institute which also produces an online magazine, educational
programs, podcasts and other events, most notably
in 2010, Testaments of the Heart in support of the work of
Francesco Lotoro, who has been collecting and recording
music written in the concentration camps of World War
II. Mythic Imagination has also produced The Human Forum
conference for The Alliance for a New Humanity,
of which Ms Foah is an advisory board member. In the
spring of 2010, a feature film about Mythic Journeys was
released.
Corey Frison Through his company,
Labrys Creations, artist Corey
Frison has combined his
devotion to healing energy,
knowledge of the Futhark
runes, tarot, and talent for
jewelry making. Corey’s
fascination with spiritual
and energy healing began in
childhood. This eventually
led to his study of hypnosis
and metaphysical healing
arts and tarot. Corey settled
on jewelry as the medium for sharing his knowledge and
talents. His early jewelry used mainly stone and metal elements,
but then he realized he had a strong connection
to wood. Corey utilizes the energy of natural wood to enhance
his jewelry and rune sets.
Corey has since branched out, no pun intended, to include
spirit boards as well as other wooden items including
boxes. Corey has over 20 years of experience and currently
can be seen in Underground Atlanta at Whispers
of the Oracle. A gifted tarot and palm reader he uses his
unique skills and experience to help those seeking him
out.
Intuitive and sincere, Corey will use the tools he has access
to, be it tarot, runes or palmistry, to examine the events
in your life and your current situation so that you can
move forward with confidence. He will help you achieve
a level of clarity so that you can better understand your
intentions and reinforce or, when necessary, redirect your
actions.
Your visit with Corey promises to be enlightening and
empowering.
Carrie Anne Hunt
Carrie Anne is an actress
by trade and a faerie by
birth, or at least that’s
what the evidence suggests.
It would, perchance,
explain that basket at the
edge of the woods twentysomething
years ago …
She attended the S.C.
Gov ernor’s School for the
Arts and was a member of
the Trustus Theatre Appren tice Company for two years,
where she got both profes sional training and her first professional
acting job. 8
Since then, she has gone on to perform internation ally
in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival inScotland, study Shakespeare,
and earn her B.A. in Acting fromWinthropUniversity.
Her focus has now shifted to acting for the camera
and the full-time pursuit of a career in film and television.
Favorite stage roles include: Miranda in ‘The Tempest,
Kwan-Yin in Goddess & the Magdalene, and Beth in Sam
Sheppard’s A Lie of the Mind. Film-wise, Carrie Anne is
most proud of her role as Sophy Hopkey in the historical
epic Wesley, which was released on DVD this month! She
can also be seen (soon!) as Serra in the upcoming graphic
novel series, Time of the Faeries: Afterlight.
She hopes to be a part of projects that spark the fires and
stir the waters, so to speak. She feels that we have lost our
‘woods walk’ and would very much like to return a sense
of wonder, journey, and discovery to the world through
her work.
Thrilled to be a guest at Faerie Escape, she wishes you all
a rollicking good time and plenty of heart opening experiences.
IK - King of the Trolls
Bryan Thompson has been an improvisational actor at
Renaissance Festivals for 20
years. He created the character
of IK, King of the Trolls
(for whom he is best well
known), and played him
for 10 years at the Georgia
Renaissance Festival and can
now be seen in the shade of
the Tennessee Renaissance Festival
along with his fabulous
friends, The Faebles!
He has also made guest appearances as IK at the Carolina
Renaissance Festival, Scarborough Faire, and the Louisiana Renaissance
Festival. In addition to that, IK has also made appearances
at the award winning Netherworld Haunted House
and Six Flags over Georgia’s Fright Fest.
Bryan has also played the role of King Richard the Lionheart,
and a couple of other noble characters, and if you’re
shorter than 5’6” he has a usable sword that is taller than
you. In addition to all of this, he has worked as the Entertainment
Director of the Georgia Independence Day Festival,
in which he’s also played John Adams. Bryan’s realm of
expertise is character creation and improv, as well as costume
design and prop construction.
9
When not doing all of these silly things, he is a Graphic
Designer and Illustrator.
Joining IK this year are serveral of his Trollish subjects,
including his daughter - Princess Amoanya, Rhianna
the Troll from Scarborough Faire, Rubella the Troll from
the Tennessee Renaissance Festival, Diarrhea the Troll (pronounced
DEE-oh-RYE-ah), and a few other minions such
as Poppa Flopsie.
IK would like to remind everyone that he is not a homestuck
troll, nor are any of his subjects. This should be evident
by the fact that they are present at this convention,
and is not stuck at home. He is , however, an admitted
Brony, and feels no shame for being so.
Ted Skirvin
Ted Skirvin first was inducted into the world of hobby
gaming in the Autumn of 1979. He was a freshman in
high school and in his first day of French class. The guy
behind him had a strange book with warriors and monsters
on the cover. After asking about it, Ted heard his first
description of Dungeons & Dragons. He searched for info
about the game days later and that began his journey into
the amazing world of hobby gaming: RPGs, miniatures,
board games, card games, etc. He founded three mini-conventions
of his own in the late 80′s and early 90′s. He has
been the Gaming Coordinator for a great little convention
called TimeGate since 2010. And, he was selected to be
Lord of the Games for Faerie Escape.
