NYCC Sets the Pace
Stephen R. Covey writes, “Wisdom is … your underst<strong>and</strong>ing
of how the various parts <strong>and</strong> principles apply <strong>and</strong> relate to each
other.” This “integrative wholeness” is a feature in healthcare
that NYCC has been striving to achieve. Since last year’s President’s
Message, “At NYCC, We’re ‘Walking Our Talk,’” the College has
continued to demonstrate its leadership, most notably in the area
of integration. The benefits have been felt across the board –
resulting in better preparation of NYCC students <strong>and</strong> positive
changes within the chiropractic profession.
Integrative Relationships
NYCC continues to reach out to a diverse cross-section of
the population. Student interns at the Depew Health Center
have begun to provide chiropractic services to students at the
State University of New York at Buffalo (UB). A similar arrangement
has been established between the Levittown Health
Center <strong>and</strong> the State University of New York at Farmingdale.
Additional opportunities for our students include: the Seneca Falls
Integrative Health Center, the National Naval Medical Center in
Bethesda, Md., the United States Marine Base at Camp LeJeune,
N.C., the Monroe Community Hospital in Rochester, N.Y., <strong>and</strong>
the Hartford Medical Group in Connecticut.
Opportunities for our Students
These unique experiences offer valuable opportunities to student
interns for developing health goals based on patients’ needs.
Undoubtedly, UB’s students will present health concerns that differ
from those of chronically ill patients at Monroe Community
Hospital. As NYCC prepares its students to work collaboratively
with medical students, hospital staff, <strong>and</strong> other healthcare professionals,
they may, in turn, encourage these professionals to
NYCC recently entered into a partnership with A.T. Still University’s School of
Health Sciences, enabling NYCC’s alumni <strong>and</strong> friends to earn master’s degrees in
Public Health (MPH), Healthcare Administration (MHA) or Geriatrics (GHM).
The programs are 100 percent online, are accredited by the North Central Association
of Colleges <strong>and</strong> Schools, <strong>and</strong> accepted by the Missouri Coordinating Board of Higher
Education. J. Clay McDonald, D.C., J.D., NYCC’s Dean of Academic Affairs,
said, “The programs spare the student the expense of travel <strong>and</strong> inconvenience of the
traditional classroom setting, yet maintain both A.T. Still’s <strong>and</strong> NYCC’s reputations for
collaborate with chiropractors.
Integrating the Curriculum

gramming on campus. This September, I had the pleasure of
welcoming the second class of acupuncture <strong>and</strong> acupuncture
<strong>and</strong> Oriental medicine students – some of whom are enrolled in
the chiropractic program concurrently. We anticipate that the
first class of acupuncture students will soon be working side-byside
with our chiropractic students.
Changing Others by our Example
Through these integrative efforts, we have played our part in
changing the chiropractic profession. As colleagues <strong>and</strong> patients
witness our presence in such formerly unexpected places as hospitals,
we are decreasingly being classified as “neck <strong>and</strong> back”
doctors <strong>and</strong> instead as practitioners who treat a broad spectrum
of health conditions. Healthcare throughout the disciplines improves
as practitioners change the way they conduct their respective
practices <strong>and</strong> integrate chiropractic’s principles <strong>and</strong> valuable
aspects. Practitioners may exp<strong>and</strong> their treatment plans,
moving away from treating symptoms <strong>and</strong> adopting a more holistic
approach to healing.
Who benefits from NYCC’s efforts at integration? Our students,
our profession, healthcare generally <strong>and</strong>, most importantly,
patients. At NYCC, we are listening <strong>and</strong> leading the way. As
Einstein once put it, “Example isn’t another way to teach, it is the
only way to teach”.
