Chairman’s Statement and Review of Operations<br />

Moving forward, with very strong support from Madza<br />

<strong>Corp</strong>oration, Japan, the future of Mazda cars in Malaysia remains<br />

bright. In order to support business growth, the Bermaz group<br />

extensively renovated its flagship headquarters in Glenmarie,<br />

Shah Alam, as well as a number of its Klang Valley and Penang<br />

branch operations. It also purchased a property in Padang Jawa,<br />

Shah Alam as its Pre-Delivery & Inspection centre in June 2008.<br />

Changan <strong>Berjaya</strong> Auto Sdn Bhd (“Changan”)<br />

Changan is the official distributor for Chana Era vehicles in<br />

Malaysia. The first two vehicles, the Era CV6, a hatchback and<br />

the Era CM8, a family-sized Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) were<br />

launched on 19 January 2009.<br />

Built on a platform of technology, value and design, the cars<br />

have been reengineered and refined for the Malaysian market<br />

with additional safety features, improved build quality and with<br />

over 40 percent local content. They are based on models from<br />

ChangAn Auto Co. Ltd, the number one carmaker in China<br />

which has presence in 45 countries.<br />

Malaysia will also be the export hub for Chana Era’s right-hand<br />

drive vehicles for ASEAN, South Africa and other right-hand<br />

drive markets through a Memorandum of Understanding signed<br />

between Changan and market representatives from Sri Lanka,<br />

Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Brunei.<br />

EDUCATION<br />

<strong>Berjaya</strong> University College Of Hospitality (“<strong>Berjaya</strong> UCH”)<br />

<strong>Berjaya</strong> UCH received its license to operate as an institution of<br />

higher learning on 14 November 2008. It is a premier university<br />

college offering courses related to hospitality, tourism and<br />

services management from foundation to postgraduate levels<br />

under four Schools, namely the School of Culinary Arts, School<br />

of Hospitality Management, School of Tourism, Arts and Culture<br />

Management, and School of Services Management.<br />

<strong>Berjaya</strong> University College of Hospitality’s library is a conducive,<br />

cosy area for study.<br />

<strong>Berjaya</strong> UCH’s cosmopolitan city campus, totaling approximately<br />

100,000 square feet, is located in <strong>Berjaya</strong> Times Square, Kuala<br />

Lumpur. Its inaugural intake of students was in January 2009,<br />

and its current student enrolment consists of 101 students,<br />

which include international students from Iran, United Kingdom,<br />

Canada, Zimbabwe, Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand.<br />

<strong>Berjaya</strong> UCH aims to foster strategic partnerships with<br />

established institutions of higher learning who are forerunners<br />

in hospitality, tourism and service management areas. As such,<br />

<strong>Berjaya</strong> UCH has signed agreements with Leeds Metropolitan<br />

University (UK), Hawaii Pacific University (USA) and William<br />

Angliss Institute (Australia) for joint research and training, staff<br />

and student exchanges, joint sponsorship of conferences and<br />

publications and other areas of mutual cooperation.<br />

<strong>Berjaya</strong> UCH signed a Memorandum of Agreement with<br />

Universitas Indonusa Esa Unggul (Esa Unggul) in Jakarta,<br />

Indonesia, to license the University Foundation Programme<br />

to Jakarta. <strong>Berjaya</strong> UCH also signed a Memorandum of<br />

Understanding with Khoi Viet Vocational School of Tourism and<br />

Hospitality to establish a formal relationship for collaboration<br />

mainly in the form of student articulation for which students<br />

will receive academic credit, with the possibility of future<br />

developments in the areas of curriculum development, franchise<br />

of academic programmes, staff-student exchanges and research<br />

opportunities.<br />

<strong>Berjaya</strong> UCH’s Centre for Graduate Studies manages<br />

various postgraduate courses offered by the four Schools in<br />

collaboration with strategic alliance education partners, while<br />

its Centre for Professional Development and Lifelong Learning,<br />

and English Language Centre provides exclusive result-oriented<br />

executive training and professional short courses to fulfill the<br />

educational needs as well as enhance the knowledge and skills<br />

of working adults.
