1 NED KELLY: Brass Cash Box, engraved "Ann Jones, Glenrowan Inn, GLENROWAN, 1876".
The Glenrowan Inn was established by Mrs Ann Jones. She paid £6 for a block of land, which had a
small slab hut built on it. A £100 mortgage allowed her to erect a weatherboard building lined with
hessian and paper and ceilings of calico, furnish it, and have enough money to start the business.
On Sunday 27th June 1880, just after midnight, Ned Kelly took over her Hotel so that it could be
used to house the Gang's hostages. By 3:30 am the following day, her hotel was nothing but ashes,
having been burnt down by the police, to try and flush the last of the Kelly Gang out of hiding.
Provenance: The Cash Box was recovered 6 days after the fire by a farm worker from Greta,
and about 1890 was given to the Great Grand-mother of Mrs H.Wilson of Taggerty, and has
Ron Clarke lights the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony
of the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games
(APL/Allsport)
Ron Clarke – Some biographical notes
Ron Clarke enjoyed one of the most illustrious careers in world long distance running. Having broken the World Junior
Mile and Two Mile records in 1955, he was chosen to carry the Olympic Torch around the M.C.G. the next year to open
the Melbourne Olympics. Clarke ceased competing in the following year (1957) in order to complete his accountancy
qualifications.
He married Helen in 1959 and did not return to competition until 1962. He set his first world record the following
year in Melbourne, when on December 18 th , 1963, watched by fewer than 30 specatators, he broke the Six Miles and
10,000 metres records in one race.
In a span of eight years on the international circuit he broke 18 official world records and, for a period of seven years
from 1965 to 1972, held every world record from the 2 miles to the one hour run. No athlete, in history, has matched
this feat. He also improved the record times for the two main distances, the 5,000 and 10,000 metres, by greater margins
than had ever been achieved before, or since. In 1965, in a period of six weeks, Clarke broke 11 world records in 16 races
in 8 countries.
Clarke competed in two Olympics, Tokyo in 1964 and Mexico City, the altitude-affected Games in 1968. At the Tokyo
Games he was ninth in the 5,000m, won the bronze in the 10,000m and came 8 th in the marathon. Four years later, in the
rarified atmosphere of Mexico City, he ran courageously to finish a spent sixth in the 10,000m collapsing, near death, at the
end of the race and running a creditable fifth in the 5,000m. Ron Clarke also represented Australia in the Commonwealth
Games, at Perth in 1962, Kingston in 1966 and Edinburgh in 1970, where, although gold eluded him, he won four silver medals.
Lot COLLECTIBLES Estimate
In 1965 Ron Clarke was voted “BBC International Sportsman of the Year”, “World Sportsman of the Year” by the
International Association of Sports Writers, “Australian Sportsman of the Year” and “Athlete of the Year” by the
prestigious “Track & Field News” (USA) and “World Sports” (UK). The French Academy of Sport selected him as their
“World Sportsman of the Year” in 1966. Clarke equalled Paavo Nurmi’s record of seventeen world records in 1967-68
and later became a successful businessman and sports commentator. After spending 13 years in London he returned to
Australia where he was instrumental in the development of the Couran Cove Resort and The Runaway Bay Sports
Super Centre.
In 2001, Helen and Ron Clarke relocated to Melbourne where they have established the recently launched CEPA Trust,
one of the world’s most innovative philanthropic organisations, of which Ron is President.
The CEPA Trust – The Council for the Encouragement of Philanthropy in Australia
CEPA is a non-profit charitable trust whose mission is to encourage philanthropy (donations to charity) in Australia. It’s
mission is to encourage philanthropy in Australia and to mobilise citizens – corporate and private – “to make this a better,
fairer and more decent world in which we all help others to help themselves.”
The Trust is operated by an extremely small staff – Ron Clarke, plus two assistants and is controlled by an Advisory
Council of prominent Australians. No donations are used for administration costs, which are covered by private sponsorship.
For the purpose of allocating funds to suitable organisations, the members of the Council will make selections from a list of
charities researched and evaluated by CEPA’s expert consultants. Only contributors and Council members can recommend
causes or projects for the research team to consider. No unsolicited approaches from charities will be considered. If hearing
about CEPA’s activities motivates individuals or organisations to donate directly to a cause they already know about, then
CEPA supports and encourages this outcome.
Research shows that Australian corporate philanthropy has declined steadily in recent years and that individual donations
to charity are generally much lower than in similar foreign countries. For example, the average American citizen gives
4 times what their Australian counterpart donates to charity. CEPA has been designed to facilitate and stimulate every
level of giving in Australia.
CEPA brochures explaining how the Trust works and how to donate, are on display in 898 of the major Australia Post outlets.
You can use the form in the brochure to make a donation at the Post Office itself or the donation can be sent directly to CEPA.
