Golden West Chapter
Receives Its’ Constitution
By Mike Welch, PLA Public Relations
I was honored to have the opportunity
to present the newest PLA Chapter,
Golden West Chapter, on Saturday, 17
March 2001, their constitution into the
PLA organization. Although I had not previously
known any of the chapter members
due to me being on the East Coast my whole
Loadmaster life, we were all connected together
by being Loadmasters. I had a
chance to meet some great people who
have had tours of duty with 14th, 15th or
53rd at Norton AFB, and some from March
ARB.
The officers are:
President - Walt Byrns
Vice President - Joe Ward
Secretary - Tom Neyman
Treasurer - Cecil Clark
PLA Member # 1000
Robert Mark Stamm, 176 Operations
Group Stan/Eval LM at
Elmendorf AFB, AK has been awarded
a FREE LIFE MEMBERSHIP for being
the PLA’s 1,000th member. He was also
given a PLA patch and pin as memento
of this PLA milestone.
Stamm is a member of (our
newest) the Denali (Alaska) Chapter, recently
organized primarily by the efforts
of Mark Sprenger.
The 1,000th PLA membership
application came in a batch of twentysome
applications all with same date.
The 1,000th member had to be chosen
by asking PLA President Emeritus, Bill
Cannon to draw one of the names out
of a hat. Continued on page 5
A Party
By Duke Warner
So There I Was in Italy with my C-
5 crew enjoying some post-mission cocktails.
We had been putting down the Liquid
Courage (Beer) for quite awhile when we
decided it was time to find some food. So
we are walking down these streets in some
Italian town and every restaurant we stopped
at is so crowded that there is a 30 minute
wait (or we were to obnoxious and they didn’t
want to deal with us). In the quest for food
at every place we stopped we couldn’t get
food .
We were walking down the road
when we heard this music and a lot of people
laughing and having a good time. So we followed
the sound and came to this bridge
going over a small creek leading to a very
secluded park. We walked over the bridge
and saw a man standing at a podium. We
asked him how much to get in and he said,
” It’s free and we are excepting donations.”
So we all throw in a 1,000 Lira each, he slaps
a sticker on our chest (which we can’t read
because it’s in Italian) as we go over to join
the celebration. The food and wine are excellent
and very cheap! We ate, partied and
danced for a few hours and headed home.
As we were walking out my buddy
Big Jim, noticed he did not get a sticker so
we had to wait for him to run back across
the bridge and get one. We walked back to
the hotel laughing about the good times we
just had. As we walked in the young woman
who had checked us in was still working and
had this very confused yet amused look on
her face.
When she spoke up and said ”You
are Americans right? Did you know the red
and white sticker on your chest says you
support the Italian Communist Party?”
We said, “No, my god!”
The Moral of the story is; What a
great job we have! How many of your friends
have partied with the Commies?
Aerial Port Patches Project
I’m writing with the hopes of securing
your assistance in an Aerial Port
project here at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio.
We are in the process of forming the world’s
largest Aerial Port patch collection, which
when completed will be presented to the Air
Force Museum at a future date.
As of this time we have collected
over 140 Aerial Port Squadron/Military Airlift
Support Squadron patches for the project.
Many of these are units are no longer active.
However, our collection is not complete.
With your help maybe we can wrap up this
project and bring some notoriety to an often
overlooked organization.
We need the following for the collection:
1) Anything from 10th - 24th, 26th - 32nd,
34th, 36th - 43rd, 45th, 47th - 49th, 51st,
54th, 58th, 64th, 70th, 74th, 75th, 77th,
79th - 80th, 82nd - 84th, 89th, 91st - 92nd,
96th - 99th
2) Anything in the 100 - 200 range
3) 314th APS
4) Anything in the 900 or higher range
On the MAPS side we need anything not
listed below:
1)1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 16th, 25th,
29th, 31st, 39th, 40th, 41st, 42nd, 53rd,
73rd, 76th, 80th, 91st, 133rd, 179th.
I too serve in an aerial port squadron
and have been immersed in this project
for some 12 months and have gained a
greater appreciation for the impact aerial
porters have had on the global mobility mission
for decades. Now it’s time to share that
appreciation with others. If you are inclined
to support our effort please forward the
item(s) to the address below.
Your assistance is sincerely appreciated,
Captain Kirk..
Apparently the loadmaster on a USAF C-130 was invited to take the engineer’s
seat for awhile. He started jabbering away, not realizing that he was transmitting on
Uniform instead of over the ICS.
LM: “Hey, this is great! I see why you engineers like this seat so much — you can
see everything from here! This is just like the starship Enterprise! All ahead, Mr.
Sulu, warp factor ten!”
Followed shortly afterward by:
ATC: “You wanna get back on intercom, Captain Kirk? You’re transmitting on my
frequency!”
Cows might fly..
Crew members of a Russian
cargo plane steal a cow to supplement
their wages. They put the cow in their
freighter and fly off home over the sea of
Japan.
The cow objects to lack of bovine
class on Vodkaprop Airways and
lashes out. The quick-thinking crew, sensing
danger to the aircraft, open the rear
door and kick the cow out.
Down at sea-level, Japanese authorities
imprison the rescued crew of a
sunken fishing trawler, unable to believe
their story that boat has been bombed
out of the water by a flying cow...
Handling a Civilian 747 Freighter
By Herman Reede
After working as an operations officer
for nine years with KLM (a Dutch airline
) I’ve had the opportunity to create a
loadmaster unit for our brand-new freighter
operation. Two years ago KLM converted two
25 year old Boeing 747-400 Combination
Passenger and Freighter (‘combi’) aircraft
into so-called Special Freighters. While purpose
built 747F freighters are nose/side
loaders, Special Freighters are converted
passenger aircraft and the maindeck can
only be loaded through a side door. (But it
measures 134” X 120” -- roughly the size of
the aft cargo door on a C-130 or C-141,
ed.) The conversion has been done by
Boeing in Wichita , Kansas.
Loadmasters are only needed on
stations which are new to the freighter network
or if any odd-size cargo has to be
loaded like helicopters and for special charter
destinations. On regular outstations KLM
has it’s own staff; if the regular staff is not
available a loadmaster will be put on the flight
as well.
When doing charter flights I start
preparing a day before
the actual flight.
Cargo agents have to
be instructed on the
pallets configurations
because there are
weight, height and
shape restrictions, as
well as certain positions
we have to consider
when carrying
certain dangerous
goods. We can carry
30 pallets (88” X 125”
and 118” high -slightly
larger than
military 463L pallets,
ed.) on the maindeck
and another 9
pallets (limited to
61” high) in the
lower holds. Maximum
payload is
about 236,000
lbs).
Three
hours before flight
I start preparing
the loading instruction
and arrange all
other paperwork
like flight plans, NOTAC, weather, ATC info ,
crew information, GENDECs, make performance
calculations. Furthermore I check
items like catering, water supply, toilet service,
fuel quantity,
cleaning and the
availability of a
pushback tractor and
towbar. Then I go to
the aircraft to do the
actual loading.
In flight the loadmaster
performs a
maindeck check and
does some preparation
for the next leg
and also takes care of
food and drinks for the
cockpit crew and possible
passengers. We
operate mainly to
North America, the
Middle and far East, Europe and Africa. After
arrival it’s time to disengage the door
slides , open the passenger and cargo door
and instruct groundcrew after which the
offloading starts. The loadmaster is also responsible
for safe offloading, avoiding damage
to aircraft and cargo, personal safety
for the loaders. One of the major tasks is to
avoid tailtipping since we don’t work with
tailstands. Believe it or not, tailtipping is a
serious risk, specially during offloading a
747.
After offloading, most of the time I
go to the crew hotel (after flying one of the
longer legs), however, if there’s some more
flying to do we will fly back home right away
or fly double or triple stretches. It also happens
that the airline is positioning us to a
certain station with a regular passenger flight
to allow us to do some planning and instruction
before the freighter is coming through.
In my off days I also work for a second carrier
on flights within Europe.
I’ll tell you more in a later edition of
The Loader. Comments are welcomed via
An EP-3 Story
This from an Admiral who spent
some time at a barbecue talking to several
members of the EP-3 crew. “They’re
great young kids—impressive individuals
when you meet them.”
Best line of their experience:
You may remember that early in their detainment
on Hainan Island the DATT (US
Army 1-star) visited them in an open forum
with the Chinese present—consequently,
they were very limited in what they
could say. As he finished, the DATT asked
if there were any questions. An E-3 raised
his hand, stood up in the back of the group
and asked:
“What is the per diem rate here
in China?”
“You gotta love those EP-3
guys—they never lose focus” said the Admiral.

PLA Member #1000
Robert Mark Stamm, born in 1952, was raised and educated in Kansas. He
has a BA in Psychology from Wichita State University which he earned while working
for the Kansas Air National Guard in Fighter aircraft maintenance. In 1978, he moved
to Greeley, CO to train as a Certified Flight Instructor for general aviation. Then, in
1982, he moved to Anchorage, AK where he joined the Alaska Air National Guard.
Stamm is married to Jeanie Koehn, of Limon, CO and has two daughters.
Stamm described his loadmaster career in Alaska this way: “The training
was a bit unconventional. Basic Loadmaster course was in St. Paul, Minnesota at the
Minnesota ANG Base. From there Flight Training was with 36th Tactical Airlift Squadron
at McChord AFB, Washington. ‘Bullet’ Bob de Haas and Larry Lange taught me
well! “
“Currently I have 200 hrs. in the E model Herc and 5500 hrs in the C-130H
model. I became an ILM in ‘87 and Flight Evaluator in ‘93. My flying squadron is the
144th Airlift Sq. and I’m the 176 Operations Group Stan/Eval LM.
Taste of Home Chef
Dee Ann Lindsey The Carroll News
FromThe Carroll News, Carroll County, VA
March 14, 2001
DeWhitt Sizemore; retired US Air
Force Master Sergeant, former VFW commander,
Carroll County native (and PLA
Life Member, ed.). Chef?
One of Sizemore’s greatest pleasures
is cooking. And it is his ability in the
culinary arts that has led Taste of Home;
the magazine “edited by 1000 cooks”, to
feature him in their series on men who love
to cook, in the June-July, 2001 edition.
Sizemore became interested in
cooking out of necessity, rather than for the
sheer joy. When he, a brother and his father
lived in the family home, just over the
hill from where he now lives in Carroll, VA.
“It was just the three of us and we
had to cook to survive. As the youngest, I
usually had cleanup duty,” recalled
Sizemore.
However his turn to cook came
soon enough and it is something he has continued
to do all his life.
“I kept cooking and canning for my
family. Then my wife went to a Taste of
Home cooking school. She decided to take
me. I’ve been cooking for her ever since.
She’s often said it was the best investment
she ever made in sending me to the cooking
class,” said Sizemore with a laugh.
A family friend, Ida Mae Alderman
of Galax, VA nominated him for the magazine.
The recipes he intends to submit
are: Salmon Sour Cream Puffs, Shrimp Creole
and Pumpkin Cheese Cake.
The retired Air Force Master Sergeant
moved back to Carroll in 1979. In addition
to cooking, Sizemore enjoys woodworking
— His hands made the wood trim
of his home, along with many pieces of furniture
— gardening and golf and is active
in the VFW Moose Lodge.

gala event in Long Beach, especially the eight retired Loadmasters in attendance.
General Cassidy commended the Boeing Company on its superior aircraft –
the C-17 – and how well it is operating in the AMC world today. He reminisced on how
the Boeing and USAF Loadmasters and US Army personnel made sure the money part
of the aircraft – the cargo compartment – was the way they wanted it to ensure the C-17
became the Airlifter of the Future. During development he remembers many frantic
phone calls in the middle of the night concerning the deletion of some necessary systems
for the cargo compartment the Loadmasters required and he considered this a
lifesaver for the Airlifter of the Future.
The evening was capped off with Mike Welch presenting some needed C-17
Loadmaster Appreciation
Picnic At McChord AFB
Hosted and paid for by Bill Cannon.
After 6 months of careful planning
the 2nd of June arrived as a drizzly overcast
day. This would be the day of Bill Cannons
tribute to his many Loadmaster friends
in the world. It was decided that a little bit
of very typical Northwest weather would not
be a deterrent to the Master Plan.
The events kicked off at 10 AM with
people arriving from as far away as Missouri
—Larry Chitty. A total of 200 People showed
up and made this a day to remember for
everyone. Live music was provided by Jim
Kettermen and his All Star Band. The food
was catered from “WARTHOG BARBQUE”.
The menu consisted of delicious pork ribs
and chicken with corn bread and all the trimmings.
Many volunteers worked very hard
to bring this together. Thanks to Mrs. Cannon,
Lillian Cannon, and Dan Watson for the
great job in the kitchen. Deserts were the
greatest and provided by Loadmasters and
their wives. Thanks to Norm Keppler and the
many people who arrived as early as 8 AM
to set-up for the Picnic. Thanks to everyone
for coming out and enjoying a great day at
Holiday Park. It was a great day of Friendship.
Most thanks of all goes to Bill Cannon
for footing the cost of the get together.
Thank You Bill Cannon. We will never forget.
You are indeed a true friend of all Loadmasters.
Special Item: It was voted upon
Mid-Atlantic Chapter
Pope AFB, NC
The last quarter has been a busy
one in the Mid-Atlantic Chapter. We were
preparing for and then executing our 3rd
Annual Golf tournament. It was a great success.
We raised over $1,100 for our chapter.
We also gave prizes away to thirteen
teams. In the raffle after the tournament we
gave away a weekend trip to Myrtle Beach
and a gold putter (won by our VP). Many
thanks to our numerous sponsors.
Our next meeting is scheduled for
28 June at 1630 in the Pope AFB Enlisted
Annex. We are in the process of planning
our Chapter picnic. We will break tradition
and have it in August , so that our loadmasters
can come before they deploy for their
AEF rotation.
Members of the Golden West Chapter are anxiously awaiting their trip to visit the
C-17, “Globemaster lll” at the Boeing Plant in Long Beach CA. The trip planned for July
21st is being coordinated with Mike Welch, Public Relations Officer, of the PLA.
Walt Byrns and Joe Ward recently visited March ARB and talked to the Commander
and Chief L/M of the 730th about membership in the Golden West Chapter and
the PLA and their planned trip to Boeing. Chief Thompson displayed a memo board in the
L/M Section that has PLA and Golden West Chapter activities.
Two members of the chapter are worthy of accolades for their continuing
blood donations through the San Bernardino and Riverside Blood Bank, Jack D.
Gregory, recently surpassed the 24 gallon mark with his apheresis donations, Joe
Ward will donate his 40th pint or 5 gal’s of whole blood in June. Joe’s donations are
currently shared with the VFW and American Legion.
Joe says that donations can be made to most organizations that have a participation
of 35 members or more. He also reports that the Blood Bank has recently extended
the upper age limit for senior blood donors from 70 to 75 years of age, those turning 76,
will need a permission slip from their physician.
Five new members were added to the Golden West Chapter during April and
May: James Flowers, Jack D. Gregory, Craig S. Johnson, Duke Sanders and Ed Silbermann.
Walt Byrns, Chapter President
We are in the planning phases of our 3rd annual chapter
picnic. It is currently scheduled to be held at the Solano Park near
Winters CA. We have reserved a picnic pad for the 25th of August.
If you’re in the area, please stop by for a day of family fun.
The chapter is sponsoring a PLA booth at the Travis Air
Expo on the 16th and 17th of June 2001. What a great opportunity
for us to tell what we are about and increase our exposure to the
hundreds of loadmaster that are in our community. We hope to
increase our national membership and encourage more participation
in our local chapter. We will be having brochures and applications
available that will tell them what we are all about and how they
can belong.
RC Jones and Mike Druding continue to support our local
chapter as executive committee members and outstanding participating
in chapter activities. Joe Adams that has taken over the
museum display and has done an outstanding job of tracking down
pictures and getting them displayed.
Other members of our chapter that routinely support our
monthly meetings and offer inputs are highly appreciated. We need
the support of all members to keep our association going and on
the right track.
Our monthly meetings are scheduled the first Tuesday of
every month at the Delta Breeze Club (NCO Club), on Travis AFB,
at 1900 hrs.
Nortwest Chapter
McChord AFB, WA
The Northwest Chapter is doing very well. We have about
136 members and growing. We have several projects pending: On
Memorial Day we will visit local cemeteries and place US Flags
upon the final resting places of our departed Loadmaster friends.
The McChord AFB open house will be 16th and 17th of
June. We will have a PLA Display set up in one of the open hangers.
Our main function at these shows is to recruit new members.
We are also in the Planning/Approval Stages of establishing
a Loadmaster Memorial at the McChord Memorial Grove.
The plan is to build a medium size gazebo with the floor made of
bricks engraved with the names of our fallen. This is part of “Remembering
Our Own”. The Gazebo will also honor the Air Force’s
two Enlisted Medal of Honor Recipients John Levitow and William
Pittsenbarger.
We will need help with the actual building of the gazebo
as well as dollar donations. Local Chapter members have already
pledged a generous amount but more will be needed.
Another project that we are working on is the GATHER-
ING OF LOADS 2002. We have the deal pretty well set with a Motel
in the McChord area. We need input from our members to
come up with ideas that will make this the best Gathering yet.
The Northwest Chapter Meets at 9 AM on the 2nd Saturday
of each month. The meetings have been interesting and productive.
Denali Chapter
Anchorage, AK
Summer greetings to all
loadmasters from the members of
the PLA’s newest chapter. Denali,
meaning “The Great One”
seemed appropriate for a chapter
name and we think it is a great
place to be a loadmaster. We
jumped from a handful of members
to about sixty by my count
now and it looks like we have
some room to grow. We are looking
at ways to thaw igloos in the
winter and track loaders down on
the rivers in the summer so we
have enough members to keep
the chapter going.
We held our elections over
at Kulis ANG base where the
PLA’s 1,000th member, Mark
Stamm, was elected as our vicepresident.
You can read up on
Mark in another article (see page 1) here in The Loader. Made for a pretty neat way to kick off the chapter by presenting Mark with the
1,000th member certificate and gave us all a good reason to enjoy a toast or two.
Arrangements were made for Mark Lewis, West Coast V.P., to come up to Anchorage and present us with our charter. As luck
would have it, Mark Lewis, Dan “Howdy” Hay (we let flight engineers
come play with us on occasion), and I had time to do some
deep-sea fishing out in Seward’s Resurrection Bay. We had great
weather, calm seas, and were hardly bothered at all by the very
few fish that came by to impale themselves on our hooks. Saturday
night Dave Bivens hosted a loadmaster, promotion, and charter
presentation cookout at his house and Mark Lewis did us the
honor of presenting the Denali Chapter its charter into the PLA.
Thanks for coming up Mark,it was a great pleasure having you
here and you did a super job.
Congratulations are in order for all new TSgt and MSgt Loadmasters.
It was a pretty good promotion cycle for the loads up
here and we have a fair share of smiling faces. Our five new TSgt
selects are Dave Bivens, Jeff Begley, Jinx Bell, Jerry Rotton, and
Dave Walker. Our two MSgt selects are Greg Naatz and Jerome
Thomas. Again, congratulations to all new selects.
The weekend of June 23rd will be the Alaskan loadmaster
campout up at Montana creek. Dave Chitwood has ten acres of
dirt up that way and has volunteered to make it a parking lot for
loaders that weekend. Free grub Saturday night compliments of
the 517 AS loadmaster section and Montana Creek is going to be
overflowing with king salmon. At least its banks will be full of loaders
attempting to pull their kings outta the creek and onto the barbecue.
We are hoping to make this an annual event so mark it on
your calendars and bring the four-wheel drive. Dave’s place is a
few miles back in the woods.
Thanks to everyone who helped get the Denali Chapter off
the ground. I especially want to thank Walt Baade and Shem Miller
for all their support in helping us getting started off on the right foot.
Fellas, I really appreciate that, Thanks!
Scholarship “Names”
A PLA national committee has been formed for the purpose of selecting names of our two annual scholarships. It is our policy
to name each scholarship after a deceased loadmaster. This committee will evaluate all names submitted from individual chapters and
individuals not assigned to a particular chapter. Each name must be submitted no later than the 1 st of January annually. PLA members
assigned to a particular chapter should submit their nomination to that chapter. Members that are not presently assigned to chapters
may submit a name directly to our national headquarters address.
Each chapter will evaluate names submitted and provide one (1) primary name
and one (1) alternate name. Names submitted must have a relative or next of kin for the
purpose of obtaining authorization for use. Additionally, an address and phone number
must be included for confirmation purposes. The selected name will only be used once if
selected.
The nominee names must contain a letter describing why the deceased person
should be selected over others with a biography of the deceased. There will be no requirements
in the selection process for the demise of the person, i.e. combat, aircraft accident,
natural etc.
The national committee will evaluate the packages and the two names selected
for the two scholarships will be forwarded to our scholarship Committee for inclusion on
the scholarship certificates.
Picnic continued from page 6
A collection was taken to get
the Memorial underway. More money
will be needed and all members worldwide
can help us with this project. A
small donation made out to The Northwest
Chapter of the PLA would be appreciated.
Send to: PO Box 4351
