Having competed in the first event in 2008 I offered to put together teams for the D.H.O for this year’s competition
which was held in Mürren between March 13th and 15th.
Remembering that the first competition had some serious racers
taking part, I believed if we drew on some of our ex-racers
for the Junior Teams and if we ‘oldies’ could stay fit and have
a little race training, we might stand a chance of putting the
D.H.O on top where it should be! I had enormous fun putting
the teams together and it took me back to all those happy years
when my children were involved with Racing and Training
under the expert guidance of Ingie.
Some of the older generation had a couple of day’s race training
on the Lauberhorn ace course under the expert (if not amused)
guidance of Christian Bühler of the Wengen Ski School. It’s
all very well going straight and as fast as you can as in the
Macmillan Cup Race but going through gates is a whole new
story! It certainly focused the mind and made us all understand
a little more about ‘attacking the course’ and ‘inspecting’ before
a race! We finally had the following five teams:
D.H.O 1: Men (under 45):
Leo Flindall, Webb Seymour, Chris Hoyle, Marcus Zumbühl.
D.H.O 2: Men (under 45):
Karl Ungar, Dan Crouch, Mark Gassmann, Johnny Moore.
D.H.O Women (under 45):
Vicky Tampin, Grace McCutcheon, Mary Day, Alexandra Moore.
D.H.O Women (over 45):
Sally Ireland, Maureen Fanshaw, Sheridan Killwick, Liz Moore.
D.H.O Men (over 45):
Richard Hackett, Richard Gassmann, Martin West and
John Pailthorpe.
Race Results:
D.H.O women under 45:
1st of 4 teams (noting that two of the teams joined together)
D.H.O Men 2:
2nd of 9 teams
D.H.O Men 1:
7th overall
D.H.O Ladies over 45:
2nd of 4 teams
D.H.O Men over 45:
6th of 7 teams

org.uk and you will also note how close the D.H.O 2 under
45 team were to being 1st! All the young in our teams had not
raced for several years but some excellent training stood them
in good stead.
There was also a fiercely competitive ‘Fun Parallel Slalom’
which carried no team points but was nevertheless taken quite
seriously! The D.H.O 2 boys were just pipped at the post by the
Lauterbrunnen young men for first place!
Kandahar once again did a superb job organising and running
the races on Winteregg in Mürren. We had marvellous weather,
a very friendly competition and a lot of fun. We hope this race
will continue in the same manner for many years to come.
