Use <strong>DOLI</strong>s family of Goodrich Flexometers!<br />

The Goodrich Flexometer originally was designed as a<br />

manual tester controlled by an oper<strong>at</strong>or <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> micrometer<br />

screw to keep <strong>the</strong> balance beam in balance. Since 1986,<br />

<strong>DOLI</strong> is autom<strong>at</strong>ing Flexometers. In <strong>the</strong> beginning, our<br />

main goals in autom<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> system were: to have an<br />

autom<strong>at</strong>ic control for <strong>the</strong> displacement and to get <strong>the</strong><br />

oper<strong>at</strong>or off <strong>the</strong> micrometer screw. At th<strong>at</strong> time, we added<br />

a pneum<strong>at</strong>ically driven puncture needle to measure <strong>the</strong><br />

centre temper<strong>at</strong>ure <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> test. With <strong>the</strong> fully<br />

autom<strong>at</strong>ed version (handling of 10 samples), <strong>the</strong><br />

measurement of all results had an absolutely equal timing.<br />

This improved <strong>the</strong> quality of <strong>the</strong> results tremendously.<br />

Standard Flexometer: Fully autom<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

with 20 sample silo.<br />

In 2001 and 2002, <strong>the</strong> complete electronics of <strong>the</strong><br />

system has been redesigned. Now, <strong>the</strong> balance<br />

beam is controlled by an LVDT with a closed loop<br />

controller and <strong>the</strong> PC is connected with serial<br />

links, only. All st<strong>at</strong>ions, such as height<br />

measurement (before <strong>the</strong> test and after <strong>the</strong><br />

cooling time) as well as <strong>the</strong> cooling st<strong>at</strong>ions are<br />

served autom<strong>at</strong>ically. Of course, pre-he<strong>at</strong>ing and<br />

test area inside <strong>the</strong> temper<strong>at</strong>ure chamber are<br />

served by <strong>the</strong> handlingarm, also.<br />

Ultim<strong>at</strong>e Flexometer: Fully Autom<strong>at</strong>ed with 56 samples,<br />

storages and all extensions, including newly designed<br />

17.8mm Ø and 30mm Ø sample loading device.<br />

Next thought was, why not having viscoelastic properties,<br />

also? We applied strain gauges to <strong>the</strong> lower shaft of <strong>the</strong><br />

lower holder and <strong>the</strong> load could be measured. The result of<br />

<strong>the</strong> measurement, however, was not only load. It also<br />

showed an oscill<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> beam of balance. For us, this<br />

was <strong>the</strong> reason not to measure viscoelastic properties with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Standard Flexometer.<br />

Standard Flexometer offers a constant strain.<br />

The question arose, why not use a new<br />

direction - a new drive? The idea was born to<br />

install a powerful linear motor. A long series of<br />

tests showed, th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> maximum points with<br />

6.35mm stroke and 2MPa <strong>at</strong> 30Hz could be<br />

easily reached (standard test is 4.45mm stroke<br />

1MPa <strong>at</strong> 30Hz). The load cell is in <strong>the</strong> load line<br />

with <strong>the</strong> sample and we have no oscill<strong>at</strong>ion of<br />

mechanical parts.<br />

Of course, <strong>the</strong> “Ultim<strong>at</strong>e Flexometer” has all <strong>the</strong><br />

fe<strong>at</strong>ures of a Standard Flexometer. However,<br />

<strong>the</strong> big advantage is, th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> load and stroke<br />

change can be done by a finger tip on <strong>the</strong> PC<br />

keyboard.<br />

The load- and <strong>the</strong> stroke change were <strong>the</strong> only problem<br />

we came across while autom<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> system. It would<br />

have been <strong>the</strong> most easiest way to change <strong>the</strong> eccentric<br />

drive into a hydraulic drive. By doing so, we would have<br />

obtained a stress controlled Flexometer and not just a<br />

strain controlled Flexometer. But considering <strong>the</strong><br />

environmental conditions of a hydraulic drive, this was<br />

not <strong>the</strong> improvement we had in mind.<br />

Ultim<strong>at</strong>e Flexometer: Sample storage, height measurement st<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

and handlingarm.<br />

In addition, customers were interested in: higher amounts of samples (let us test over <strong>the</strong> weekend),<br />

longer cooling times (1,2 ...5 hrs.), measuring <strong>the</strong> height after <strong>the</strong> test, a stress controlled system and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r curve forms as sinusoidal curves. Even <strong>the</strong> different sample size, which is on <strong>the</strong> market, is no<br />

problem for <strong>the</strong> “Ultim<strong>at</strong>e Flexometer”. Absolutely all parameters for each sample, including <strong>the</strong><br />

different sample diameter (available as an option), can be changed. The instrument works as a<br />

constant strain Flexometer and as a constant stress Flexometer.<br />

Ultim<strong>at</strong>e Flexometer offers constant strain test<br />

and individual curve form test.<br />

Today, <strong>the</strong> “Ultim<strong>at</strong>e Flexometer” is available with all <strong>the</strong><br />

results a Standard Flexometer can offer. Fur<strong>the</strong>ron, it works<br />

as a constant strain Flexometer as well as a constant stress<br />

Flexometer. In <strong>the</strong> near future, viscoelastic properties and<br />

different curve forms will be available, bearing <strong>the</strong> advantage,<br />

th<strong>at</strong> all samples can be handled absolutely in <strong>the</strong> same way<br />

and with <strong>the</strong> same timing.<br />

Sample d<strong>at</strong>a handling can ei<strong>the</strong>r be done <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Flexometer<br />

PC or <strong>the</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a can be delivered by a network. The results will<br />

be sent back to a network or a LIMS after <strong>the</strong> test.<br />

Our new Flexometer Family offers: <strong>the</strong> “Standard Flexometer”<br />

as a manual or fully autom<strong>at</strong>ed version (up to 20 samples)<br />

and <strong>the</strong> “Ultim<strong>at</strong>e Flexometer” as a manual or fully autom<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

version (11 to 56 samples). Here, manual means, th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

oper<strong>at</strong>or has to load one sample by hand only, all o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

controls and results are performed autom<strong>at</strong>ically and<br />

un<strong>at</strong>tended.

The Flexometer software <strong>DOLI</strong>Flex is able to communic<strong>at</strong>e with all common LIMSystems. It offers a complete<br />

Flexometer oper<strong>at</strong>ion and sample management.<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>ron, <strong>the</strong> new program fe<strong>at</strong>ure “Calibr<strong>at</strong>ion” enables <strong>the</strong> test of reference samples for each test sequence<br />

or in regular intervals. A comparison of <strong>the</strong> results of those reference samples will allow st<strong>at</strong>ements about <strong>the</strong><br />

steadyness in testing behaviour of <strong>the</strong> Flexometer even over large periods of time. Having defined limits for<br />

<strong>the</strong> reference tests, charts will show, when <strong>the</strong> results run out of <strong>the</strong> wanted specific<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />

All <strong>DOLI</strong> Compression Flexometers do meet <strong>the</strong> standards ASTM D623; BS 903, part A50; DIN 53533, part 3;<br />

ISO 4666-3.<br />

With <strong>the</strong> “Ultim<strong>at</strong>e Flexometer”, it is also possible to work according to JIS K-6265 and <strong>the</strong> future standard<br />

ISO4666-4.<br />
