Use DOLIs family of Goodrich Flexometers!
The Goodrich Flexometer originally was designed as a
manual tester controlled by an operator at the micrometer
screw to keep the balance beam in balance. Since 1986,
DOLI is automating Flexometers. In the beginning, our
main goals in automating the system were: to have an
automatic control for the displacement and to get the
operator off the micrometer screw. At that time, we added
a pneumatically driven puncture needle to measure the
centre temperature at the end of the test. With the fully
automated version (handling of 10 samples), the
measurement of all results had an absolutely equal timing.
This improved the quality of the results tremendously.
Standard Flexometer: Fully automated
with 20 sample silo.
In 2001 and 2002, the complete electronics of the
system has been redesigned. Now, the balance
beam is controlled by an LVDT with a closed loop
controller and the PC is connected with serial
links, only. All stations, such as height
measurement (before the test and after the
cooling time) as well as the cooling stations are
served automatically. Of course, pre-heating and
test area inside the temperature chamber are
served by the handlingarm, also.
Ultimate Flexometer: Fully Automated with 56 samples,
storages and all extensions, including newly designed
17.8mm Ø and 30mm Ø sample loading device.
Next thought was, why not having viscoelastic properties,
also? We applied strain gauges to the lower shaft of the
lower holder and the load could be measured. The result of
the measurement, however, was not only load. It also
showed an oscillation at the beam of balance. For us, this
was the reason not to measure viscoelastic properties with
the Standard Flexometer.
Standard Flexometer Test
Constant Strain Test
stress
strain
Standard Flexometer offers a constant strain.
The question arose, why not use a new
direction - a new drive? The idea was born to
install a powerful linear motor. A long series of
tests showed, that the maximum points with
6.35mm stroke and 2MPa at 30Hz could be
easily reached (standard test is 4.45mm stroke
1MPa at 30Hz). The load cell is in the load line
with the sample and we have no oscillation of
mechanical parts.
Of course, the “Ultimate Flexometer” has all the
features of a Standard Flexometer. However,
the big advantage is, that the load and stroke
change can be done by a finger tip on the PC
keyboard.
The load- and the stroke change were the only problem
we came across while automating the system. It would
have been the most easiest way to change the eccentric
drive into a hydraulic drive. By doing so, we would have
obtained a stress controlled Flexometer and not just a
strain controlled Flexometer. But considering the
environmental conditions of a hydraulic drive, this was
not the improvement we had in mind.
Ultimate Flexometer: Sample storage, height measurement station
and handlingarm.
In addition, customers were interested in: higher amounts of samples (let us test over the weekend),
longer cooling times (1,2 ...5 hrs.), measuring the height after the test, a stress controlled system and
other curve forms as sinusoidal curves. Even the different sample size, which is on the market, is no
problem for the “Ultimate Flexometer”. Absolutely all parameters for each sample, including the
different sample diameter (available as an option), can be changed. The instrument works as a
constant strain Flexometer and as a constant stress Flexometer.
Ultimate Flexometer offers constant strain test
and individual curve form test.
Today, the “Ultimate Flexometer” is available with all the
results a Standard Flexometer can offer. Furtheron, it works
as a constant strain Flexometer as well as a constant stress
Flexometer. In the near future, viscoelastic properties and
different curve forms will be available, bearing the advantage,
that all samples can be handled absolutely in the same way
and with the same timing.
Sample data handling can either be done at the Flexometer
PC or the data can be delivered by a network. The results will
be sent back to a network or a LIMS after the test.
Our new Flexometer Family offers: the “Standard Flexometer”
as a manual or fully automated version (up to 20 samples)
and the “Ultimate Flexometer” as a manual or fully automated
version (11 to 56 samples). Here, manual means, that the
operator has to load one sample by hand only, all other
controls and results are performed automatically and
unattended.

The Flexometer software DOLIFlex is able to communicate with all common LIMSystems. It offers a complete
Flexometer operation and sample management.
Furtheron, the new program feature “Calibration” enables the test of reference samples for each test sequence
or in regular intervals. A comparison of the results of those reference samples will allow statements about the
steadyness in testing behaviour of the Flexometer even over large periods of time. Having defined limits for
the reference tests, charts will show, when the results run out of the wanted specifications.
All DOLI Compression Flexometers do meet the standards ASTM D623; BS 903, part A50; DIN 53533, part 3;
ISO 4666-3.
With the “Ultimate Flexometer”, it is also possible to work according to JIS K-6265 and the future standard
ISO4666-4.
