A journey through Hempel’s world
Hempel was founded in 1915 by J. C. Hempel, who introduced
his idea for ready-made marine paint with vision, great
enthusiasm and enterprise. Today, more than 90 years later,
the company has grown to become the largest independent
supplier of marine and protective coatings in the world.
Hempel‘s greatest asset, our thousands of employees, are
spread over five continents. They work according to our
’one company’ principle, which means that we break down
geographical boundaries without jeopardising close contact
with our valued customers. Our employees work together to
provide our customers in more than 80 countries with great
service and fast delivery of high quality paint.
Hempel has 20 factories; including a new production facility
in Poland, which is Hempel’s largest in Europe, 49 sales offices,
2 main and 6 regional Research & Development centres;
including a newly expanded R&D centre in Barcelona,
and more than 150 stock points strategically located around
the world.

Protective
Hempel is a leading supplier of high-quality paints to heavy industry.
Drawing on decades of experience from the marine segment,
Hempel offers anticorrosive coatings for virtually any type of
steel structure. Our coatings deliver proven, long-term effectiveness,
protecting components in even the most challenging
environments, including offshore oil and gas structures
and the insides of chemical tanks. Hempel paints can be
used in both alkaline and acid environments.
In just a few days, we can supply the right product in a standard
shade (including RAL, NCS and BS) for your industry and
project, even for smaller tasks.
Hempel customers are all over the world, so our products
meet global specifications and our assortment is available
wherever you are.
Anticorrosion protection
for power plants
Hempel provided two structural steel coating systems – one for
inside and another for external surfaces – for the new Trianel
combined-cycle power plant at Hamm-Uentrop in Germany.
Siemens Power Generation was the contractor, and the environmentally
friendly 850 MW plant is owned by 27 regional
and municipal energy providers from Germany, the Netherlands
and Austria.
More than 50.000 litres of Hempel coatings went into the
project.
The three-coat external system began with the primer;
HEMPEL’s GALVOSIL 15702 or HEMPADUR ZINC 17360
followed by the high-solid, high-build epoxy; HEMPADUR
MASTIC 45880. The final coat was the semi-gloss acrylic
polyurethane HEMPATHANE TOPCOAT 55210, chosen for its
good colour and gloss retention.
Connecting Buda and Pest – with shine and anticorrosion
Hempel provides shine and corrosion protection for Budapest’s
new Megyeri Bridge across the Danube. With its cablestayed
span of 300 meters, this bridge is the longest of its
kind in Hungary.
Built by Hídépítő Zrt. and Közgép Zrt. for the National Infrastructure
Development Corporation, the bridge’s 200.000
square metres required 221.000 litres of paint. Price was the
customer’s main consideration in choosing the three-layer
system. Experience was also a factor, as this combination
had already been used for another new bridge near Budapest.
The coating system meets the ISO 12944 standard.
The primer is HEMPEL’S REACOR 2K EP ZN 250DE, an
epoxy containing zinc dust. The second layer is the epoxy
HEMPEL’S REACOR 2K EP EG 257DE. It contains micaceous
iron oxide, which is increasingly popular in coating systems
for its environmental and protective qualities.
Hempel’s HEMPATHANE 87480 is the topcoat. This polyurethane-acrylic
paint (approved by Germany’s Federal Highway
Research Institute) weathers exceptionally well while retaining
its gloss and colour.

The main steel construction elements inside the buildings
were fully coated in the fabricating shop, but the tanks,
pipes, boiler casings and other equipment were initially protected
using just the primers mentioned above (HEMPEL’s
GALVOSIL 15702 or HEMPADUR ZINC 17360). After assembly,
the hard and tough epoxy topcoat HEMPADUR 45143
was applied. This paint was also chosen for its rapid application
properties. The same coating system was used for the
shop-painted components.
The boiler casings had been subcontracted to the Israeli firm
Brand Industries Ltd. Hempel Cyprus provided the zinc silicate
primer HEMPEL’s GALVOSIL 15702 for that project.

As Hempel’s core business segment, our marine paints cover newbuildings and
maintenance, both onboard and in drydock.
Fouling control products
Hempel offers a complete range of fouling control products
based on two main technologies – antifouling and fouling
release. Our comprehensive antifouling product range offers
great flexibility in specifications to meet the unique
needs of today’s customers. The highly innovative fouling release
product range offers exceptional fuel-saving potential
without the use of biocides.
Ballast tank coatings
Hempel has a complete range of ballast tank coatings, all of
which meet the latest performance criteria while delivering
optimum performance and protection for ships’ vital parts.
Our ballast tank coatings combine a strong track record with
innovative technology, such as patented fibre reinforcement.
Tank coatings
Hempel tank coatings meet the specific demands unique to
each type of cargo being transported. Our broad product assortment
offers the ultimate protection for the widest array
of liquid cargoes.
Cargo hold coatings
Hempel offers a complete range of coatings for cargo holds
that provide outstanding corrosion protection as well as excellent
wear and impact resistance.

Shop primers
Hempel’s shop primers have been developed to help newbuilding
yards achieve optimum production flow by combining
superior corrosion protection with excellent cutting and
welding properties.
Hempel offers a wide range of advanced
corrosion protection solutions using
epoxy technology.

Container
Hempel has grown over the last 35 years to become
the world’s leading supplier of container coatings,
both for new containers and for the renovation of older
units. Our worldwide organisation, expertise, product
range and communication are highly valued by leasing
companies, ship owners, container factories and other
end users.
Protective coatings account for around seven percent
of a containter’s total cost, and a container’s life can
be extended considerably with the right coating system.
Therefore, it is extremely important for every end
user to choose the right coating supplier. The coating
must both protect the container against rust and fulfil
the container owner’s decorative requirements.
GENSTAR, one of the world’s biggest container
leasing companies, requested waterborne
products for its containers. Hempel supplied
HEMUDUR ZINC 18560, HEMUDUR 18500
and HEMUCRYL 58030 for an application in
India that was exposed to severe conditions.
GENSTAR was impressed with the gloss of the
topcoat, as well as the coating performance.
It performed on a par with, or better than,
a comparable solvent-borne system.
Inspection of the containers after seven years
proved the long-lasting protection offered by
Hempel’s waterborne products. The overall
appearance was still very good and the high
gloss was largely preserved.

Hempel supplies all types of coatings, varnishes and boat care products for use in building and maintaining sailing and motor
boats.
The Hempel yacht product range
Primers
Our range of primers provide an exceptional sealing layer with high water resistance and superior adhesion properties on
many surfaces, including wood, steel, plywood, aluminium, fibreglass and ferrocement. The primers provide excellent protection
above and below the waterline.
Antifouling
We have a complete range of effective and environmentally friendly antifouling products for all boat and water types. We also
meet many different requirements, from the ultimate in year-round protection with good headway through the water to lowercost
alternatives that still provide good fouling protection.
Top Coats
Both Hempel’s single-pack enamel and two-pack polyurethane top coats offer a beautiful finish in high-density, clear colours.
They are easy to use and offer high gloss, colour fastness and durability.
Varnishes
All of Hempel’s varnishes contain an effective UV filter. Some are one-component, full-bodied varnishes with high gloss that
are easy to apply, dry fast and retain their lustre for many years. Others are two-component varnishes that are impact-resistant
with an extended durability and high gloss. All of our varnishes resist salt water and sunlight, and some even resist cleaning
agents and strong liquids such as alcohol.
Boat Care
All boats require maintenance, even during the sailing season, to ensure their good appearance and durability. The amount
of care required depends on the environment in which the individual boat is used or moored. Hempel has a full range of boat
care products to fit the needs of every discerning boat owner.
The environment is everyone’s business
Quality and the environment are the two factors of paramount
importance in Hempel’s product development. All
antifouling products are produced in factories with environmental
certification in accordance with ISO 14001.
Superyachts
Hempel’s ProSystem products – ProFiller, ProBuild and ProFinish – are part of the special range of products
supplied to professional boatyards, newbuilding and repair yards for superyacht projects.

Miro Museum
Miro Foundation, Barcelona
The simple form, colours and interior design are intended
make it easier for visitors to move through the museum
and view the works on exhibit. With the use of indirect
natural light this results in a unique environment.
Hempel supplied the protective paint for the floors and
devoted particular attention to the traditional features of
Catalan architecture. The interior colours create the perfect
setting for the Miro Foundation’s collection of 14.000
works of art (paintings, tapestries, sculptures, drawings
and pottery).

Decorative
Hempel is active in providing decorative paints in certain
markets of Europe, the Middle East and China. Our comprehensive
range of products include high-quality emulsions
and enamels that, together with a wide range of various
texture paints, offer users a broad palette from which to
choose. The product range also includes primers, sealants
and fillers, so customers can use a complete Hempel system
to best achieve the intended creative outcome. To complement
the core assortment of decorative paints, Hempel offers
a number of special-effects paints to create distinctive
surfaces such as velvet or marble.
Our decorative paints are known and preferred by many
building owners, architects and contractors. We have a comprehensive
range of products for outdoor and indoor use, including
paints for floors and steel structures.
Our paints are also developed for various climatic conditions,
including low temperatures, high humidity and wet locations,
as well as polluted environments.

Since 1948, the purpose of the Hempel Foundation has
been to support cultural, humanitarian, scientific and other
objectives for a common good and as a contribution to the
Hempel business.
We call our humanitarian causes for our Good Corporate
Citizen programmes. The aim of these programmes is to help
provide long-term economic, educational or social support to
people in local Hempel communities worldwide.
The Hempel Foundation supports major programmes and
projects, such as providing long-term relief for the tsunami
victims in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, or earthquake victims in
Chengdu, China.
In 2009, we began to provide long-term support to the
victims of the 12 May 2008 earthquake in Chengdu in the
Sichuan province of China. In the project, we are helping 10
orphaned children to get a new start in life. On each project,
we ask the children to paint their dreams for the future.
