Abstract Introduction The determination of the working length (WL) and its maintenance during cleaning and shaping procedures is a key factor for successful endodontic treatment. This determines, how far into the canal the instruments are advanced and worked while limiting the depth to which the canal filling may be placed 1 . The literature suggests two valid positions for terminating the apical extent of endodontic instrumentation and obturation at the cementodentinal junction (CDJ) 1, 2 or at the apical foramen 4 . However, in most cases (50ñ98% of all roots) it is well known that the anatomical apex may or may not coincide with the apical foramen. A mean distance of 0.5ñ ENDODONTICS AND ORAL RADIOLOGY The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the utility of Raypex5 electronic apex locator (EAL) in determining the root canal length (RCL) in comparison to conventional radiography and radiovisiography (RVG). Forty single rooted anterior teeth were selected for the study. Diagnostic images were obtained with conventional radiograph and RVG and RCL was calculated for both the images. Following access opening, actual root canal length (ARCL) was determined. Electronic RCL was determined by using Raypex5 EAL. Position of file on conventional radiography and RVG with respect to the RCL obtained through Raypex5 EAL was done. The results indicated that the Raypex5 was 90% accuracy in locating the apical foramen in comparison to conventional radiography and RVG which were 72.5% and 85% respectively. It was concluded from this study that electronic method proved to be more accurate than conventional radiography and RVG in determining RCL. Traditionally, conventional radiography has been a popular tool employed in WL determination. However, computed radiovisiography (RVG) has been developed that generates images by means of an X-ray sensor instead of conventional film. But both techniques are only able to provide reliable information on the location of the radiographic apex 2 . The use of electronic apex locators (EALs) in WL determination is in its revolutionary phase. Everyday claims of so called newer generations of apex locators are being published in the literature.
