TIPS FOR USING THE INDIE BIBLE
HOW THE LISTINGS ARE SORTED
a) TYPE OF SERVICE (Publication, Radio Station, CD Vendor etc.)
b) Genre of Music
c) Geographic Location
The listings are set up this way so that you can quickly find a specific service in a specific area for a
specific style of music. ie: Finding a Hip Hop magazine in England that will REVIEW your music.
HOW THE VARIOUS STYLES OF RESOURCES ARE SORTED
1. If a publication welcomes submissions from MANY genres, that publication will be listed in the
Mainstream section. Publications in the Mainstream section welcome a wide variety of genres, but
usually nothing too extreme. Common genres in this section are Pop, Rock, Indie Rock etc.
2. There is an unavoidable amount of Genre Overflow from section to section. For instance, if you are in a
Punk band, you will not only find sites that will review your music in the Punk Section, but you will also
find several sites that welcome your style of music in the Metal and Goth Sections.
Most publications review more than one style of music. The sites listed in The Indie Bible are placed in
their respective sections based on the musical style that publication lists as their preference. For instance,
if a publication states that they welcome Folk, Blues and Jazz music, that publication would be listed in
the Folk Music section, because "Folk" was the first genre mentioned.
3. Quiz: Where would you find the listing of a magazine that reviews the music of Christian Women New
Age artists that live in the Chicago area? Would you find it in the
a. Christian Music section?
b. New Age Music section?
c. Women in Music section?
d. The Local Music section under “Chicago”?
The answer is “d”, the Local Music section. I’m using this example to point out that the LOCAL MUSIC
SECTION OVERRIDES all other characteristics of any given resource. If it is a resource that provides a
service for a specific area (country, city, town, state, province) then that resource is listed in the Local
Music section (ie: a resource for Country Music bands based in Montana). The Indie Bible is arranged this
way so that you can quickly look at the listings in your area to find out what kind of help is available for
you locally. Please make sure to check out the Local Music section for your area (or those places that you
will be passing through during your tour). You will be surprised at how many resources there are in your
community that are willing to help you out.
4. The majority of the stations listed in the Mainstream Radio section are College, University and
Community stations that have a weekly show catering to EVERY style of music, both mild and extreme
(Country, Pop, Hip Hop, Death Metal, Goth, Classical etc.), so make sure that you CHECK THEM ALL!

Before you start contacting the various resources listed in The Indie Bible, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND
that you read the articles in SECTION 7 to better understand how to submit your music for review, radio
airplay etc. These articles are written by industry professionals who have a wealth of experience. They
know what works, what doesn’t work – and why. Reading the articles in SECTION 7 will save you an
ENORMOUS amount of time and money and will help your career to move in a positive direction. In other
words, you won’t have to make the same mistakes that I and many others have made while trying to
survive in the music business. Please take the time to read these articles. You will be glad that you did!
