PLEASE READ THIS!!
I have received several complaints from music reviewers and radio hosts about high number of
e-mails and CDs they are receiving that have nothing to do with the style of music that their
publication or radio show promotes. PLEASE DO NOT SEND OUT MASS MAILINGS to the sites
listed in this book telling them about your new release, latest invention, upcoming shows etc.
Instead of sending your e-mails and CDs out to everyone on the planet, take the time to read through The
Indie Bible to find out who is actually looking for your specific style of music. RULE #!: Don’t try and
convert anyone! Respect that fact that different people have different tastes in music.
Put yourself in the position of a Magazine Editor. Let’s say for example you are the Editor of a magazine
that covers Folk Music. How irritating would it be continually getting blasted with e-mails from artists in
Metal and Punk bands asking you to review their CD? How would you feel each day as you grab the
truckload of CDs from your PO Box, when you find that about 1 in 30 are actually Folk CDs? You’re going
to feel irritated and frustrated.
Note that there are 50 articles in this edition. You will not find in ANY of the 50 articles a Radio Host or
Magazine Editor saying that a good way for an artist to make initial contact is by sending out mass
e-mailings. They all say the same thing, which is “take the time to do some research, and THEN contact
the various services personally”.
Remember, these are human beings you’re dealing with. The recipient of your personalized e-mail or
promo package will respect the time you have put in to find out about them and most often will get back to
you quickly. On the other hand, a mass mailing is an insult to him/her and your e-mail will be deleted
immediately and your CD chucked into the garbage from three point land.
The extra time you put in to do a bit of research and to personalize your initial contact will pay off for you
in a BIG way in the end!
career. If you feel that you made a worthwhile investment by purchasing The Indie Bible, please tell your
friends about it.
