A short circuit is most often an accidental 

connection between two conductive parts 

which have a different potential. 

The cause of the short circuit can be : 

-a broken driver 

-deterioration of insulation by mechanical 

wear or aging, 

- the fall-or the introduction of a driver in a 

circuit with bare energized parts. 

These consequences can be very serious 

for the facility in which it occurs, but especially 

for the person or people working 

nearby. 

Rising temperatures due to the intensity 

of short circuit is such that the metal parts 

or energized conductors and partly based 

pieces of metal are thrown causing severe 

burns. 

Another danger is the latter of ultraviolet 

emerging from this strong light present 

during the short circuit, it can damage the 

retina to lose sight. 

To avoid short circuit, the best solution 

is to work offline, or ask your training to 

work under live voltage and to equip you 

with the equipment necessary for your 

safety during this type of work. 

Arc-flash burn 

Un court-circuit est le plus souvent dû à 

une liaison accidentelle de 2 conducteurs 

présentant une différence de potentiel. 

A l’origine des courts-circuits : 

-la rupture d’un conducteur, 

-la détérioration des isolants par vieillissement 

ou usure mécanique, 

-la chute ou l’introduction d’un outil conducteur 

dans un circuit présentant des 

parties nues sous tension. 

Ces conséquences sont parfois très graves 

pour l’installation dans laquelle il survient, 

mais surtout pour la ou les personnes 

travaillant à proximité. 

L’élévation de la température due à l’intensité 

de court-circuit est telle que le métal 

des pièces ou conducteurs sous tension 

fondent partiellement et des bouts de 

métal en fusion sont projetés provoquant 

de graves brûlures. Un autre danger est 

celui des ultraviolets qui se dégagent de 

cette forte lumière présente lors du courtcircuit, 

elle peut endommager la rétine au 

point de perdre la vue. 

Pour éviter le court-circuit, la meilleure 

solution reste de travailler sur une installation 

hors tension, sinon demandez à votre 

entreprise une formation aux travaux 

sous tension et de vous équiper de tout le 

matériel nécessaire à votre sécurité lors 

de ce type de travail. 

Een kortsluiting is meestal een toevallige 

verbinding tussen twee geleidende delen 

met onderling verschillend potentieel. 

De oorzaak van kortsluiting kan zijn : 

-een gebroken geleider 

-aantasting van de isolatie door 

mechanische slijtage of veroudering, 

-de val of inbreng van een schroevendraaier 

in een circuit met naakte onder 

spanning staande delen. 

De gevolgen ervan kunnen zeer ernstig 

zijn voor de installatie waar het zich voordoet, 

maar vooral voor de persoon of personen 

die vlakbij aan het werk zijn. 

Stijgende temperaturen te wijten aan de 

intensiteit van de kortsluiting is zodanig 

dat de metalen onderdelen of geleiders 

onder spanning of zelf stukken gesmolten 

metaal worden weggeworpen, die ernstige 

brandwonden kunnen veroorzaken. 

Een ander gevaar is de ultravioletstraling, 

daar het sterke licht aanwezig tijdens de 

kortsluiting, schade aan het netvlies kan 

aanbrengen of zelf het zicht kan verliezen. 

Om kortsluiting te voorkomen, is de beste 

oplossing om afgeschakeld te werken, 

of vraag opleiding om te werken onder 

spanning, alsook uitrusting en gereedschap 

om uw veiligheid tijdens dit soort 

werk te verzekeren.

Protective insulating gloves made of natural 

latex. Anatomical design, great flexi- 

bility in different thicknesses anti-bacterial 

treatment, giving an additional protection 

of the skin and particularly important when 

wearing gloves for extended periods. 

Latex gloves offer the widest range of 

conditions for use from 500 to 36000 volts. 

Latex gloves must be used in conjunction 

with a leather overglove, these electrical 

gloves offer protection against cutting or 

tearing.

Recommendations for Use 

Always define a voltage of use to select 

the adequate class of gloves from 00 to 4 

Only wear tested and approved insulating 

gloves. 

Do not use gloves older than 1 year from 

the date of manufacture without prior testing. 

Before and after each use, conduct a visual 

control by inflating the glove with air to 

check for air leaks. 

Storage 

Gloves must be stored at ambient temperature 

(10-21°C) in their original bag, 

away from direct sunlight, ozone or heat. 

Each pair is packed in an opaque anti-UV re-usable 

reseal polybag, instructions of use are mentioned on 

the rear of this bag in 8 languages. 

Recommandations d’utilisation 

Définisser toujours la tension de travail 

pour choisir la classe adéquate de 00 à 4. 

Porter uniquement des gants isolants testés. 

Ne porté pas des gants plus vieux que 1 an 

date de production sans les avoir testés. 

Avant et après chaque utilisation,procédé 

à un contrôle visuel des gants en les gonflant 

pour vérifier les fuites d’air. 

Stockage : 

Les gants doivent être stockés à température 

ambiante (10-21°C) dans leur emballage 

d’origine, à l’abri du soleil, d’ozone 

ou de chaleur

Normatives for clothings 

IEC 61482-2 

Within the garment standard, the norm refers to fabrics that can be tested to «open arc», covered by IEC 61482-1, or «arc in a 

box» covered by IEC 61482-1-2 

The standard requires the following: 

• A single layer garment having a minimum of ATPV = 4 cal/cm2 (167.5 kJ/m²) when test to the open arc test method or Class 1 

when tested to the box test method; 

• Garments must be sewn with Inherently Flame Resistant threads; 

• When garments have a higher rating of arc protection on the front than the back, the torso, sleeves and legs must be in the same 

arc rated material the back can have a lower arc rating; 

• Garments must have no exposed external metal (any internal metal or melting parts are to be covered inside to avoid contact with 

the skin); 

• The garment label will show the lowest ATPV or Class if different panels on the garment are used; 

• The double triangle symbol will be on the label with the ATPV and/or Class underneath it; 

• Upper (ie. torso) garments only will be visually tested to the IEC Open Arc or Box test and the fastenings are to still perform after 

the arc test; 

• Additional User Information will be provided to include that no undergarments which melt under arc exposure are to be worn and 

that other PPE should be worn for full body protection (e.g. helmets and gloves). 

IEC 61482-1-1 - OPEN ARC TEST 

‘Open arc’ test method (ATPV test and garment test). This replaces IEC 61482-1:2002. The ‘Open arc’ test method is the same as 

the original North American method for measuring the Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV), as used in ASTM F1959. Materials 

or assemblies are given an ATPV value, expressed in kilojoules per square metre (kJ/m²), which can be converted into the familiar 

cal/cm². 

IEC 61482-1-2 - ARC IN A BOX TEST 

‘Box arc’ test method (Fabric classification and garment test). Published as EN 61482-1-2 in March 2007. The ‘Box arc’ test method 

is based on the original European method described in ENV 50354, with a heat transfer measurement. Materials or assemblies are 

classified as Class 1 (4 kA) or Class 2 (7 kA). 

The test is intended to simulate an accidental exposure to an electric are in a low voltage installation. 

This standard specifies testing of materials and of complete garments on a mannequin. Material tests are used to determine thermal 

insulation and corresponding risks of skin burns, whereas the garment tests are to make sure that the clothing still is operational 

after exposure. 

Both material and garment tests are carried out with a low voltage installation (400 V AC). The duration of the electric arc is 500ms 

and the electric current is respectively 4 kA for class 1 and 7 kA for class 2 protection.

What is an « Arc Flash » ? 

Arc Flash is the result of a rapid release 

of energy due to an arcing fault between 

a phase bus bar and another phase bus 

bar, neutral or a ground. During an arc 

fault the air is the conductor. 

Arc Flash can result from inserting a tool 

in the wrong place or dropping a tool into 

a circuit breaker or service area. The 

cause of the short normally burns away 

during the initial flash and the arc fault is 

then sustained by the establishment of a 

highly-conductive plasma. The plasma will 

conduct as much energy as is available 

and is only limited by the impedance of 

the arc. This massive energy discharge 

burns the bus bars, vaporizing the copper 

and thus causing an explosive volumetric 

increase, the arc blast, conservatively 

estimated, as an expansion of 40,000 to 1. 

This fiery explosion devastates everything 

in its path, creating deadly shrapnel as it 

dissipates. 

An arc flash can result in temperatures 

up to 35,000 degrees F. This is four times 

hotter than the surface of the sun. 

This can result in serious injuries ; fatal 

burns, vision (UV rays) and hearing 

injuries (due to the arc blast), or even 

worser that can give the death. 

Qu’est-ce qu’un « Arc Flash »? 

Il s’agit d’une situation où un arc électrique 

est généré du à un court circuit. Par 

définition un arc électrique est un courtcircuit 

dans l’air. 

Normalement lorsque l’on parle d’un court 

circuit on parle d’un bout d’objet conducteur 

qui fait le pont entre deux conducteurs 

sous tension; par exemple un tournevis 

échappé dans un panneau ou encore un 

ruban à tirage qui entre dans un caisson 

électrique sous tension. Il faut comprendre 

qu’à ce moment précis une quantité 

phénoménale d’énergie est libérée dans 

une période de temps très restreinte. Par 

la suite, si un arc électrique réussit à subsister, 

celui-ci vaporise littéralement le 

métal avec lequel il entre en contact. Ce 

faisant il ionise l’air ambiant qui devient 

encore plus conducteur. 

On vient ainsi de créer un effet d’emballement 

et en quelques millisecondes 

(0.001secondes) un métal passant de 

l’état solide à l’état gazeux, tel le cuivre, 

prend jusqu’à 40 000 fois son volume. On 

assiste alors à un événement d’explosion 

électrique (arc blast). 

Les températures d’un Arc Flash peuvent 

montés jusque’à 20.000°C. Ceci représente 

4 fois la température en surface du 

soleil. 

Les blessures typiquement subis lors de 

ces événements sont : brûlures externes, 

brûlures internes, lacérations, perforation 

des tympans (du à l’explosion) et bien 

d’autres blessures pouvant entrainer la 

mort.

waardoor de lucht nog meer geleidend 

wordt. 

Dit sneeuwbaleffect gaat het metaal in 

enkele miliseconden (0,001 sec) smelten 

tot een gas, zoals koper die tot 40.000 

maal meer volume inneemt. Er ontstaat 

dan een elektrische explosie, ook wel 

“Arc blast” genaamd. 

De temperaturen van een Arc flash kunnen 

oplopen tot 20.000 °C. Dit is 4 maal 

de temperatuur van het zonoppervlak. 

De gevolgen van een Arc Flash kunnen 

drastich zijn: zeer ernstige brandwonden, 

interne brandwonden, oogletsels (UV 

stralingen), gehoorletstels (door de explosie)

ASTM F1506 

Flame resistant clothing stops burning once 

the source of ignition, either a flame or an 

electric arc, is removed. Essentially, the fabric 

self-extinguishes and the secondary source of 

potential injury – clothes burning against the 

skin – is removed. All manufactured FR clothing 

passes the vertical flame test and meets the 

stringent requirements of ASTM F1506. 

ASTM F2178 method is intended for the 

determination of the arc rating of a product/ 

design, intended for use as face protection for 

workers exposed to electric arcs.
