CAS Round 4 – Cranbrook vs. St Aloysius’
(home)
7s topic: That we should make outdoor
physical activities compulsory in schools
7A team (negative): Louis Shapiro, Jasper
Stockley and Tim Bassett
7B team (affirmative): Charlie Fine, Alexander
Nettleton and Ben Harvey
Our last home debate for 2012 was very
exciting! Negating the night’s topic, the 7As
attacked St Aloysius’ arguments as fiercely
as possible. Despite shredding the first
opposing speaker’s claims and putting up
strong subsequent rebuttals the debate
unfortunately went to our visitors due to
their strong model.
Jasper Stockley
The 7Bs had a successful debate. Ben Harvey
spoke about how sport prevents obesity
in students, and Alexander Nettleton
and Charlie Fine spoke about Olympic
champions – like our very own Steve
Solomon – ultimately coming from schools
that actively support compulsory sport. The
strength of these arguments ensured our
win. It was a great team effort!
Philip Arndt
8s topic: That schools should have the
right to access their students’ social media
accounts
8A team (Negative) Sam Feitelberg, Hugo
Hughes and Richard Frost.
8B team (Affirmative) Robert McNamara, Ben
Clarke and Ben Little.
4 Term 3 Week 5
From top: THOMAS MAHONY, STEPHEN CHRISTODOULOU AND CHARLIE DONALD IN BRIEFING WITH COACH,
NATHAN ADLER; SENIOR BOYS COME TO SUPPORT THE 1ST III
9s topic: That schools should have the
right to access their students’ social media
accounts
9A team (negative): Hal Crichton-Standish,
Jack Fagan and Nicholas Lamens
9B team (affirmative): Laurence Nettleton,
Sam Atkinson and Matthew Chard
Forget your petty Friday night teenage
gatherings; CAS debating is the real deal!
Fervently negating the topic, first speaker
Jack Fagan outlined the negative impacts
on invading privacy. Hal Crichton-Standish
attacked from a moral standpoint and
Nicholas Lamens surveyed the potential
personal and social damage caused by such
a policy. Despite an unfortunate loss, the 9As
fought their hardest all season and left the
battlefield better-equipped for Round 5.
Hal Crichton-Standish
10s topic: That prisoners have too many
privileges
10A team (negative): Tom Mills, Matthew
Theophile and Jake Widjaya
10B team (affirmative): Stephen
Christoloudou, Charlie Donald and Tom
Gibson
The 10As put on a fantastic debate. Going
into the debate we were keen to win.
The home advantage to us motivated us
throughout the night. The topic was a tough
one to debate but we were able to attack
the opposition’s model, where they failed to
establish what prisoner privileges actually
exist. After much battering of their case
we emerged the winners of the debate.
However, the adjudicator suggested we
need to improve the defence of our own
arguments.
Jake Widjaya
3rd III topic: That Western countries
should not deliver aid through faithbased
charities
Team (affirmative): Luke Ditchfield, Lewis
Cooksley and Josh Barry
