Literacy Quiz
Commas are a frequent bugbear of students. Where
should the commas go in these sentences if they are to
make sense?
1. If a pregnant woman smokes her baby will be damaged.
2. She is a famous singer whilst her husband remains
unknown.
3. In the valley below the villages looked small.
can do is look at the following
great website - I
defy any student to come
away from this website
without having found a
book that would interest
them!
The website's called "coolreads".
It's made by 11-
16 year olds for 11-16
year olds. It lists all different
books by genre , so if
it's "sport" you're into then
you can look up all the fiction
books about "sport". If
it's "animals" then you can
look up fiction books about
"animals" and so on.
What's great about the site
though is that you can
read reviews of these
books written by 11-16
year olds. This all helps
you make a good choice.
Go on! Give it a try! You
won't be disappointed! The
site address is:
Calling all budding authors
and poets!
Always dreamed of being fa-
mous? Fancy having your
work published? Now’s
your chance to make those
dreams come true.
Due to the recent success
in the Young Writers narrative
and poetry competitions,
the English Department
have decided to create
a ‘Highcliffe Anthology’.
We need YOU! Or, more
specifically, any poems or
stories that you are particularly
proud of and wish
to be considered for publication.
The anthology aims to reflect
some of the outstanding
talent we have in
the school - from Year 7
through to Year 13.
Please submit work electronically
to hpearson@hs
Work submitted must be
your own work, and no
longer than 30 lines for poems
and 500 words for
stories.
We are looking forward to
reading your work!
On the following pages are
examples of Year 9 work
in English.
We hope you enjoy them as
much as we did.
