Lions Roar On! The links between the Lions Club and Highcliffe School continue to get stronger and stronger thanks to Mr Don Crabtree Youth Development Officer for the Lions Club of Christchurch. ‘We are very fortunate that Don and the Lions Club are so committed to developing opportunities for youth’ said Deputy Headteacher Mr G Hughes. Recently, the Lions have supported the development of the School Organisers, run very successful Peace Eco-Group Green fingered students at Highcliffe The Woodland Trust is a conservation charity that offers packs of hedgerow plants to schools annually. We received some hawthorn, hazel, holly, dog rose and dogwood that will certainly make the school grounds look more ‘green’ as well as attracting some insects. S-Factor Greenies are a group of students in Years 7 – 9 and each of them did some planting along the edge of the school field with the help of Geoff the Groundsman. As you can see in the photo the students were quite excited during the activity and Poster competitions and established a junior Leo’s section which also involves students from The Grange and Twynham School. Highcliffe students have developed an excellent reputation in the competition by providing the winning entrant over the past four years. Global Warming Global warming is a growing issue. It is causing plenty of problems according to top scientists. The main cause is power stations and cars letting off carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide is then trapping and reflecting heat from the sun and the heat is then warming up the atmosphere and then melting the polar ice caps. When the polar ice caps melt it is affecting many arctic animals. For polar bears their land is melting away and it is getting First Prize Winner Sofia Constantinou and Runner Up Alex Leftwich whose entry has now gone on to represent Christchurch at district level. harder for them to catch their food (seals). Seals are often in the water and polar bears catch them when they come up for air. Now there is a vaster amount of water it is harder to catch them as they can swim further away. This then affects scavengers such as arctic foxes who feed on the remains of what the polar bears eat. Most polar bears, arctic foxes, arctic rabbits etc. die of starvation more than anything now. This will then affect us as well. It is estimated that in 2030 London could be under water and all the polar bears will be dead except for the ones in captivity.
