Welcome to the Spring 2009 edition of the
COBA Pride. It is always a pleasure and an honor to
share with our constituencies the accomplishments
and changes that have occurred in the College of
Business Administration, its faculty, its students,
and its alumni since the last edition of the Pride.
It is our hope that as you read this edition of the
Pride the close relationship that exists between the
College and all of our constituencies is enhanced
and strengthened. We encourage you, as always, to
make us aware of any changes which have occurred
in your personal and professional lives in order for
us to make that information available to others,
particularly those individuals with whom you may
have lost contact.
Following a national search, Provost Payne
has selected Dr. Mitchell Muehsam as the permanent
dean of the College of Business Administration.
Dr. Muehsam will assume his new duties on
August 1, 2009, at which time I will return to the
office of Associate Dean and Coordinator of Graduate
Studies. We have begun the transition to ensure
that the College continues its quest for excellence
in the areas of teaching, research, and service to all
stakeholders. As you will see in the article about the
new Dean, Dr. Muehsam is returning to his roots
in the College of Business Administration where
he served as a faculty member in the Department
of Economics and International Business and also
as Associate Dean for eight years. I know that all of
you will welcome Dr. Muehsam back to the College
and support him as you have his predecessors.
During the Fall 2008 and early Spring 2009
semesters the College partnered with Profiles International
(www.profilesinternational.com), “Bud”
Haney’s firm, to conduct the Texas Business Challenges
Survey. The purpose of the survey was “to learn
how Texas companies are rising to the challenge of
a severe economic downturn.” A comment made in
the report (which was published in March) that was
very complementary of the college’s programs states,
“Smart Texas companies are hiring recent graduates
who got hands-on, real-world experience through
internships. The banking program at Sam Houston
State University, for example, provides students with
actual banking experience. Upon graduation, these
young professionals have been tested in the real
world, solving business problems, working with a
chain of command and proving themselves in the
workplace.”
Beginning with the Career Fair and ending
with the Academic Awards program, the Spring
2009 semester has been a very successful semester
for the College. Even in somewhat trying economic
times the semester credit hours produced in the
college grew by 3.26 percent over the Spring 2008
semester. In February the annual Career Fair attracted
49 companies seeking our graduates for

Muehsam to Take
the Helm in COBA
After a six year absence from the College
of Business Administration, Dr. Mitchell Muehsam
will return to COBA as dean, beginning
August 1, 2009. Following the dean search by a
committee that included SHSU administrators,
faculty and a representative from the business
world, Dr. Muehsam was chosen to lead the
College of Business Administration.
Dr. Muehsam joined the SHSU Department
of Economics and Business Analysis in
1989 after receiving his PhD in statistics from
Texas A&M University. In 1995, he was asked
to serve as Associate Dean and Coordinator of
Graduate Studies for COBA, and remained in
that position until 2003, when he assumed the
duties of Associate Vice President for Academic
Affairs and Dean of Graduate Studies at Sam
Houston State University.
Possessing exceptional classroom skills,
Dr. Muehsam is also well known for his energy
and enthusiasm for Sam Houston State University.
He has great vision for the advancement
and continued academic success of the College
of Business Administration and will build upon
the foundation started by previous deans, Dr.
B. K. Marks, Dr. James Gilmore and Dr. R.
Dean Lewis. The faculty and staff welcome Dr.
Mitchell Muehsam back to the College of Business
Administration.

Honored at Beta Gamma

College of Business Administration alumni, Charlie Amato and Gary
Dudley, received the Beta Gamma Sigma Entrepreneurship Medallion for
2009. Beta Gamma Sigma is the international honor society for colleges of
business accredited by AASCB International. The Entrepreneurship Medallion
is awarded to outstanding individuals who combine innovative business
achievement with service to humanity. Mr. Amato and Mr. Dudley were two
of only five recipients of this award in 2009.
The SHSU James E. Gilmore Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma nominated
Mr. Amato and Mr. Dudley for this award. Dr. Leroy Ashorn, president of the
chapter, presided at the spring induction ceremony. Dr. George Stevens, Dean
of Kent State College of Business Administration and Graduate School of
Management and President of Beta Gamma Sigma, presented the medallions
at the ceremony that was held on March 24 in the Lowman Student Center
Ballroom. Chapter honorees were Joseph “Bud” Haney and Jill Vaughan.
Mr. Amato and Mr. Dudley co-founded Southwest Business Corporation
(SWBC) in 1976. SWBC provides a wide range of insurance, mortgage
and investment services to financial institutions, businesses and families. The
company employs 1,200 employees and earns more than $1 billion per year in
premiums and loans.
Mr. Dudley serves on the SHSU College of Business Administration
Advisory Board. Mr. Amato is a former Advisory Board member. Both men
were inducted into the SHSU College of Business Hall of Honor in 2006 and
the San Antonio Business Hall of Fame, also in 2006. The Sam Houston State
University Alumni Association named Mr. Amato and Mr. Dudley Distinguished
Alumni in 2001 and 2004, respectively. Mr. Amato has been named
one of the “Most Influential San Antonians” and “Humanitarian of the Year”
by the Arthritis Foundation. Governor Rick Perry appointed Mr. Amato to
the Board of Regents of the Texas State University System. Mr. Dudley serves
on the President’s Council at Sam Houston State University.

the spring semester 2009.
Hired by Dean Jean Neal,
Dr. Hawkins began his
teaching career at SHSU
in 1966 as an instructor in
the Department of Business
Administration. He
received his BBA and MBA
from Texas A&M University
in 1965 and 1966,
respectively, and completed his doctorate of business administration from
Texas Tech University in 1974. Dr. Hawkins was promoted to full professor
in 1977.
When Dr. Rita B. Huff, chair of the Department of Accounting, passed
away suddenly in 1982, Dr. Hawkins stepped in to take over her duties and
became the acting chair for the department until 1983 when he was named
chair. It was during this time that Dr. Hawkins and three other professors
founded MicroMash, a computerized, interactive software program to prepare
students for the Certified Public Accountant Examination. It became
an important and widely used study tool for persons preparing to sit for the
Uniform CPA exam.
In 1986, desiring to return to full-time teaching, Dr. Hawkins stepped
down as chair. Already having the designation of Certified Public Accountant,
Dr. Hawkins obtained the designations of Certified Internal Auditor and
Certified Management Accountant. During his years at SHSU, he served on
numerous committees such as the Graduate Council, Curriculum Committee,
and the Faculty Tenure Committee, to name a few.
As a founding member of the Department of Accounting, it will be hard
to imagine COBA without Dr. Ennis Hawkins. We wish him many relaxing
years with his wife, Kay, their three sons, and five grandchildren.
Dr. Victor E. Sower Retires — December 2008
One of the College of Business Administration’s most respected and
influential professors, Dr. Victor Sower, professor of management, retired from
Sam Houston State at the end of the Fall 2008 semester. It would be difficult
to find another person who has contributed more to the College of Business
Administration and Sam Houston State University than Dr. Sower.
Dr. Sower is one of only two SHSU professors to receive all three of
the University’s excellence awards. He was awarded the Excellence in Teaching
Award in 1996, the Excellence in Research Award in 2001, and the Excellence
in Service Award in 2008. In addition to these awards, in 2005, Dr. Sower won
the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation Piper Professor Award, an honor that is
bestowed annually to only fifteen professors in the state of Texas for superior
teaching at the college level.
Dr. Sower began his career with Sam Houston State University and
the College of Business Administration in 1990, when he joined the faculty as
an assistant professor of management for the Department of Management &
Marketing. During his years at SHSU, Dr. Sower produced a seemingly endless
list of publications, books, manuals and presentations. He served on countless
committees, both at the University
and College level. Dr. Sower
was instrumental in developing
and funding the Technolog y
Management Laboratory where
students assemble and test robotics
for a variety of capabilities and
uses. Dr. Sower served as Faculty
Advisor to the Professional Management/Marketing
Association,
Alpha Kappa Psi National Business
Fraternity, and the MBA
Students’ Association.
He will be missed by those
who have had the pleasure of working with him and learning from him. All
members of COBA wish him and his wife Judy wonderful retirement years
enjoying their children and grandchildren.

Mary Alice Debney (’42) is enjoying her eight great
grandchildren and states “we octogenarians are aging
gracefully as health issues are the main topic of conversation.
Life is good! Blessings are legion!”
C. F. Kuykendall (BBA’47 & MBA ’51) and Ruth
Kuykendall (MBA’51) are proud of daughter, Melinda,
who teaches at Hudson Pep Elementary in Longview.
Granddaughter, Katie, is a senior at Trinity School of Texas
in Longview. After retirement as assistant superintendent
of Pine Tree ISD, C.F. and Ruth moved to Tatum. C.F.
enjoys his good health, loves working in his garden, playing
bridge, and is a member of the Lions Club. He is still
a member of the Board of Directors of the East Texas
Professional Credit Union and on the board of the Tax
Appraisal District of Rusk County.
Essie Warren Pearson (’55) is very happy and proud
as her grandson, Jace Jackson, will be enrolling at SHSU
this fall on a football scholarship. Essie’s late husband, Joe
Pearson (’55) was a member of the Bearkat baseball team
and signed a contract with the Chicago Cubs.
Benedict F. Urbish (’55) and wife, Mary Rita, celebrated
their 50th wedding anniversary on August 23,
2008, with Mass and renewal of vows at St. Vincent de Paul
Catholic Church in Denver. Attending were their three
daughters, Florence Sebern and husband, Scott of Denver,
Mary Carol Liddle of Schuylkill Haven, PA, and Celeste
Orr and husband, Dan, of Zanesville, OH. Five granddaughters
and two grandsons were also in attendance.
La Verne Kubesch Lippman (’57) retired in 1996 and
started caring for her husband of 52 years after he suffered
a major stroke. La Verne completed Brazosport College in
1986 with the degree of Associate of Applied Science and
became a legal secretary. She also obtained her Certified
Professional Secretary rating in 1989. La Verne is blessed
with four children and their spouses, five grandchildren
and another one on the way in September. She recently
competed in the Surfside Half Marathon and Houston
Half Marathon, coming in first and second, respectively,
in her age group.
W. Marcus Stephenson (’58) and wife Lila are finding
many opportunities to be involved in SHSU alumni
activities. They encourage all exes to find and participate
in the events that will bring them back in contact with old
friends from their college days. “It is a lot of fun and will
enrich your memories of those days that meant so very
much to our days on campus. Please consider it and you
will enjoy the relationships.”
J. T. Verwold (’58) attended the SHSU Golden Circle
2008 Luncheon in October. The class of 1958 was given
special recognition and J. T. states “it was nice to visit with
some of my classmates.”
Orlando “Lanny” Adelman (’60) retired as secretary/
treasurer and vice president of administration from Colorado
Western Insurance Company in 2004. He enjoys
photography, travel, bowling, camping, x-country skiing,
and snowshoeing. Orlando is currently a nature/wildlife
photographer with the trade name of “Photography by
Orlando.”
Larry E. Gardner (’61) reports that his granddaughter,
Tiffany Stone, is a junior at SHSU, majoring in interdisciplinary
studies with a minor in early childhood through
6th grade education. He and wife, Dianne, are very proud
of her as she is a 3-year member and now captain of the

All-Girl Cheer Squad at Sam. They have enjoyed attending
football games where Tiffany has cheered for the
Bearkats.
Leroy Zapalac (’61) is still employed with Citizens State
Bank in Sealy as CEO/President. He and his wife, Susie,
enjoy traveling and an occasional round of golf. They live
in a great community with the amenities of a small town
that is next to a much larger city … Houston.
Mike Ferguson, Jr. (’62) majored in Accounting,
became a Certified Public Accountant in 1971, and completed
the Governor’s Executive Development Program
at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the
University of Texas in Austin. He and his wife, Garland,
have three children, five grandchildren, and two great
grandchildren. Mike writes that his career path started
with the State Auditor’s Office in Austin, where he worked
for over 22 years. The last 13 of those years were spent
as Audit Manager over audits of institutions of higher
education. Before retirement he served for nine years as
Vice President of Finance & Administration at a state
medical school. After Mike retired from the state, he and
Garland served with the Southern Baptist International
Mission Board for one year and performed audits of all
the mission activity in the Middle East and North Africa
mission field. Upon his return to the states, the Texas
State University System recruited Mike to be the interim
VP for Finance and Operations at Lamar University and
when Dr. Simmons was selected as President of Lamar
University, Mike was asked to continue serving in that
position. Mike and Garland plan to return to Huntsville
after retiring from Lamar.
George (’60) & Marla Jean “Jennie” (Pearson)
Sanders (’59), wrote from Montgomery, AL that they
will always remember their days at Sam Houston State
Teachers College, as it was called in the early 1960’s.
George recalled that he entered the School of Business
after his hopes were dashed when he was denied acceptance
to the military because of a problem with his right
leg. After graduation he entered the field of insurance
and spent the next 40 years in that industry, starting out
as an accounting supervisor and being promoted to vice
president, secretary, and treasurer. The last ten years of his
career were with Landmark Life Insurance Company in
Brownwood where he was the secretary/treasurer, CFO
and member of the board of directors. Since his retirement
in 2002, George has served as a Sunday school teacher, past
president of the Kiwanis Club, past commander of the
Sons of Confederate Veterans, home owners association
and deacon at the Eastmont Baptist Church.
Charles G. Raines (’64) is a retired American Airlines
pilot, living in California.
E. Wheeler Coe, Jr. (’64) started a real estate business
right after graduation. He is presently doing business as
Wheeler Coe Realtors in Tomball. Wheeler is involved
in local politics, having served as a councilman and the
mayor of Tomball.
Ronny Carroll (’65), president and owner of Ronny Carroll
Homes, is very proud to announce that his company
was named one of the Greater Houston Area’s 25 largest
homebuilding companies for 2008 by The Houston Business
Journal. Ronny is a member of the COBA Advisory
Council and serves on the board of directors of the Sam
Houston State Alumni Association.
George Steven Andres (’65) writes from San Antonio
that after graduation he and wife Pat returned to Victoria
where he worked in the oilfield for 18 years. In 1983, Steve
went into the ministry, graduating from seminary in 1985.
Until 2000, he was a pastor in Post Falls, Idaho, at which
time he went into public evangelism. Steve and Pat have
had many wonderful experiences from Louisiana to Washington
State. They spend much time working on their web
site: www.AndresUSA.com. Steve says they often reflect
on the times, experiences and people they were involved
with at Sam Houston State. Steve’s grandmother, Gwen
Naylor, also graduated from Sam Houston in the 1910s,
when it was Sam Houston Normal School.
Martin Shoquist (’65) and wife Sarah live in The
Woodlands. Martin is a vice president with UBS Financial
Services. He enjoys seeing his Alpha Tau Omega brothers
each year at their annual reunion in April. Martin says “Life
is good and best wishes to all Bearkats.”
Charlie Bresenhan (’68) was a member of Delta Sigma
Pi while attending SHSU. He retired from the purchasing
department of Saudi Aramco where he worked primarily
in Houston but did spend some time in Arabia as well as
the Saudi Aramco office in Hague. Charlie now lives in
Houston where he grew up.
David W. Earle (’69), LPC, is coauthor of Extreme
Excellence, which is to be published this spring. He is also
the coauthor of Leadership, Helping Others to Succeed
and is on the faculty of the University of Phoenix.
Jan Jackson (’70) recently celebrated 35 years as broker/
owner of Jan Jackson Group Realtors in Spring. Top agents
and friends are traveling to the Atlantis Resort, Bahamas,
in April to mark the milestone.
Don Price (’71) continues to work at Hillcrest Ford/
Lincoln/Mercury in Huntsville, where they have added
the ‘Hyundai’ line to the dealership. His wife, P.J., enjoys
being an Avon representative.
Charlie Paradoski (’72) is a professional saltwater
fishing guide, a tournament fisherman, and has enjoyed
his work for 35 years. He was recently featured on the
TV show “One More Cast” with Shaw Grisby and Shallow
Water Angling.
Dr. Susan S. Lenamon (’73) has been elected the first
president of the Pearland Old Townsite Business Coalition
for a two year term. The coalition is charged with the
revitalization of the old townsite which was founded in
1894. Lenamon is a third generation and lifelong resident
of Pearland.
Ernie Koy (’73) retired after 35 years of banking in Bellville.
He worked for First Savings Association of Brenham,
Austin County State Bank, First State Bank of Texas and
Wells Fargo Bank.
Linda Bookout (’73) received her Executive Program
MBA from UT-San Antonio in 2002. She is the directortrading
for Valero Supply & Trading, Valero Energy
Corporation. Linda is involved in the Master’s Leadership
Program for San Antonio. This program prepares individuals
to sit on the board of a non-profit or governmental
agency and encourages community involvement.
Stephen (’75) and Miriam (’76) Cihal live in Victoria
where Steve practices law and Miriam teaches third
grade. Son Zack graduated from the University of Texas
Medical School Plan II in 2006; daughter Mary Jane also
graduated from UT in ’06 with degrees in journalism
and advertising. Daughter Hanna plans to graduate this
year from UT after studying one year at the University of
Sydney in Australia.
Pat Propes (’76) and wife Tricia have relocated to the
Bryan/College Station area and are the owners of Propes
Realty Group, LLC. They have been active in the real
estate business for the past three years and are associated
with Keller Williams Brazos Valley in College Station.
Bob Cummins (’77) is president of FastTrac Transportation.
His company was awarded the “Inc 5000 Fastest
Growing Private Companies” in America award and
was rated 29th in transportation and 39th in the Houston
Metro Area by Inc Magazine. The Houston Business Journal
“Fast 100” growing companies rated FastTrac #40 in
the Houston market for all private companies. FastTrac
Transportation has averaged over 50% growth for the last
six years and Bob is proud to say it is still growing.
Sarah (Dixon) Bremner (’78) is married with two
children, ages 18 and 15, and lives in LaQuinta, CA. She
works for Marriott as an accountant. After receiving her
BBA with a teaching certification, she taught business for
several years at Houston High School in Spring Branch.
Sarah was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

Van (’79) and Renae (’80) Parham live in Colleyville.
Van has practiced general dentistry for 25 years in Irving.
Van and Renae have two sons, the oldest one having graduated
with a BS degree in zoology/biomedical science. He
plans to attend graduate school at SHSU studying Forensic
Science. Their youngest son is a freshman at University
of Oklahoma. Renae plans to attend the SHSU Zeta Tau
Alpha 50 th Reunion in April.
Cynthia Collins Williams (’80) shared with us that
she and husband Michael celebrated their 27th wedding
anniversary on March 20. Their oldest daughter, Cortnie,
graduated from SHSU’s College of Education and is a
special education teacher at Clark Intermediate School
in Spring. Their youngest daughter, Michelle, is a junior
honor roll student at Carl Wunsche Senior High School,
a career academy in Spring. She is following the Career
Pathway of Secondary Education. Michelle is a star volleyball
player for Westfield and wants to be a secondary
coach. Cynthia and Michael are proud parents.
Curtis L. Edwards (’81) is an IT support technician at
South Eastern Institute, Dallas campus. He is a member
of the Student Advisor Council at South Eastern and in
his free time runs a computer repair business.
Charles W. Jones III (’81) attended the 2009 Dallas
Military Ball in April where the Chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff was the guest speaker. He also attended
the SHSU Alumni Service Awards Luncheon and Ceremony
on April 24 where he gave the invocation. Charles
is a member of the SHSU Alumni Association Board of
Directors and the COBA Advisory Council. He and
wife Lena have established two annual scholarships—the
Thelma Jean Barnes Townley Scholarship in Theatre
& Arts, in honor of his mother, and a Men’s Lacrosse
scholarship.
Kenneth Ross (’81) and wife Debra have five children-
Kenneth Ross II, Kendra, Kendal, Antoine and Anthony.
Kenneth has been an agent with State Farm for 23 years
and received many awards such as Lone Star Leader,
Millionaire Traveler, Century Club member in Life &
Health Insurance, and Select Agent for State Farm. He
was appointed by Governor Perry to be on the board of
directors for ABTPA in 2008. Kenneth currently serves
on the board of directors for the SHSU Alumni Association.
He writes that he had the pleasure of seeing old
classmates Leonard Williams, Andrew Simpson, and
Anna Bell Lopez recently at a wedding.

Association on March 1, 2009, along with Willie Nelson,
Guy Clark and Michael Martin Murphy. This honor was
well deserved after writing such hits as “He Walked on Water”
performed by Randy Travis, “Walk on Faith” by Mike
Reid, “Life’s a Dance” by John Michael Montgomery, and
“Where the Blacktop Ends” by Keith Urban, just to name a
few of the great songs he has written. Allen graduated
with a marketing degree but always had a love for songwriting
and we are very glad he pursued his love since he
has given us a long list of wonderful songs to enjoy. Allen
currently resides in Tennessee with his wife, Lori, and

their three children on a small farm with three horses,
two burros, one Texas Longhorn steer, five goats, one

Karen E. Smith (’83) continues to teach in the Career
& Technology department at Splendora High School and
has been with Splendora ISD for 24 years. She teaches
Business Computer Information Systems 1 & 2, Business
Management, and is the FBLA Advisor and the Microsoft
Office Specialist Test Administrator.
Mark Beedlow (’84) has led the Dallas Regional Business
Center of Wachovia to two consecutive nominations
for the Chairman’s Cup which is the highest honor of
2009. Mark, along with his office staff, was runner up for

the 2008 President’s Cup and he was given one of two
Wachovia Dealer Services Leadership Awards which is the
highest award an individual can receive in the company.
Mark lettered in football under Coach Ron Randleman.
He and his wife Jennifer have a son, Matt, and a daughter,
Samantha.
David Zuniga (’86) is married to Huntsville native,
Rebecca Garcia, and has been retired from IRS/CID
since 2007. David spent 20 years as a special agent posted
in Beaumont, Laredo, New Orleans and Brunswick, GA.
While at the Brunswick duty station, David worked at the
Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and traveled
to Europe, Asia, Africa, Central and South America
teaching financial investigative techniques. David currently
owns the Stardust Room Restaurant and Bar in
Huntsville. He is the board treasurer for the Huntsville
Downtown Business Alliance. Wife Rebecca is employed

Juan A. Enriquez (’86) writes that after living in
Seattle, he has now relocated to Bloomington, IL with
State Farm Insurance. Juan has been with State Farm for
21 years and has traveled extensively in the US. He has a 15
year old son and frequently comes to Houston to visit his
mother. Juan hopes to retire in 15 years even though he has
enjoyed many career opportunities and accomplishments.
He stays in touch with fellow Bearkat Eric Mestayer,
who worked with Juan at STRUTZ as a bartender during
their college years.
Barbara Frazier (’87) is still teaching web design and
computer applications to students at Magnolia High
School. This is Barbara’s 15th year and she is still enjoying
teenagers tremendously.
Steve Tierney (’87) recently became the new men’s and
women’s golf coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College.
In addition, Steve has been the head women’s basketball
coach at WVWC for the past six seasons.
Janelle Sumner (’88) writes that she completed her
MBA at University of Dallas in 2004. She currently
works at Blue Cross/Blue Shield as an Employee Relations
Consultant and has held this position for the last
four years. She loves traveling and last year went to Spain,
France, Italy, and then to Hawaii for Christmas. Janelle
has three grown children. Her daughter graduated from
SHSU with a degree in Criminal Justice and her youngest
son recently left the Marines after six years and a tour in
Afghanistan.
Rick (BBA ’94, MBA ’96) and Ramona (BA ’91,
MBA ’96) Michael write from Kingwood that Rick
has recently switched jobs from Wachovia to Skill Soft
and is excited about his new opportunity. Ramona is
PTA president and still a full-time stay-at-home mom.
She is considering running for the school board. Rick
and Ramona express their sadness due to the loss of their
beloved uncle, Ted E. Michael, who faithfully served
SHSU as Director of Human Resources for many years.

Monty Clark (’90) formed and created a new civil
engineering firm in Temple in 2008. The name of the firm

Tonia N. Cox (’91) informed us that after being laid off
by Hope for the Heart last May, she has been blessed with
two jobs. In December, she was hired as a tax professional
by H&R Block. In February, she began employment as an
accounting supervisor for USA Compression Partners,
LLC. She is excited and feels very blessed to hold these
positions.
Susan Trobaugh Mueller (’91) worked for Waste
Management for 13 years in hazardous waste as “national
account representative”. She is presently working in the
same field for Ely Environmental, LLC . Susan, a divorced
mom, enjoys being able to work from home since she has
three active children, ages 17, 11, and 9. Her children are
active in soccer, cheerleading and gymnastics. “Children
are costly and I thank my parents for my business degree
from SHSU.” Susan is engaged to Ed Savisky, father of
one son.
Ed Bounds (’92) states that he feels very blessed to have
been a successful entrepreneur for the past 18 years with
three separate businesses. Currently he and his wife Tonya
own an internet business-The Superior Home Business
Consultants/Executive Income Online. They have three

Calvin D. Bonner (’95) resides in Plano where he
works for Oncor Electric Delivery in financial planning

David Stodghill (’97) and his wife Rosmarily have been
married for eight years and have a four year old daughter
named Sofia. They live in Stafford. David currently works
for Worley Parsons, an engineering company where he
has worked for 2 ½ years in Project Controls. He has been
in the industry for 11 years. David and his family enjoy
going to the YMCA, the park, the zoo, shopping and

Chris Sower (MBA’99) and Linh Nguyen (MBA’08)
co-authored a paper with Dr. Vic Sower that was presented
at the 94th Annual International Supply Management
Conference in Charlotte, NC on May 4th. The paper
was entitled “Getting Industry-Specific Cost Models to

Michelle Siers Seaman (’03) is Controller for Pivotal
Cimarron Hills, LP and is married to Christopher Charles
Seaman, the varsity baseball coach for Georgetown High.
They have two sons, Tyler and Reese.
Paul Simon (’03) is an account manager with Monitor
Medical and covers a very large area that includes
Huntsville. He also works full-time with Texas Supreme
Mortgage as a loan officer, assisting clients with refinancing
and new home loans.
Shannon Sosa (’03) was promoted to Senior Human
Resources Generalist after receiving certification as a Professional
in Human Resources (PHR) last fall. Her fiancé,
Phillip Parker, now works for STP Nuclear Operating
Company and they plan to be married on June 13.
William Aguilar (’04) has been married to Gracie
for nine years and they have two children, Hailey (4) and
Gavin (2). William is employed by BTI/Wild Well, a
subsidiary of Superior Energy Services, as an accounting
manager, a position he has held since early 2008. William
and Gracie are involved in their church, Fellowship of the
Woodlands, and have seen many fellow Bearkats there.

Brent Stephenson (’04) completed his MBA at Nichols
College in Massachusetts, graduating Summa Cum
Laude. Brent is currently a financial analyst for the City
of Tyler.
Joshua Trantham (’04) serves as the Houston Branch
manager in the Wells Fargo Reverse Mortgage division
after four years in the industry. He lives in Conroe with
his wife, Erin, and their three sons.
Scot Barziza (’04) has recently worked for the United
States Small Business Administration and the Census
Bureau.
Jessica Warren (’04) passed the CPA Exam in September
2008 and obtained her license in November.

Christina Windham (’04) was promoted to the position
of Contract Accountant for Process Solutions, Veolia
Water North America in Houston. Christina continues
to be the lead accountant for client billings and Accounts
Receivable management but will now be more involved in
the budgeting and forecasting processes.
Andrew Ferguson (’05) began pursuing a PhD in
sociology at Texas A&M University, College Station, in
2007. Having completed his course work, he is now 50%
complete and is focused on preliminary examinations and
dissertation research. Andrew’s major area of concentration
is economic sociology with a particular focus on the
social relations of production. His dissertation research
will explore the use of team building ideology by managers
as a mechanism of social control. After completing his
PhD, Andrew plans to pursue a tenure-track position in
either a department of management or sociology.

Cory Bunyard (’06) passed the CPA Exam. He also

David Sterling (’06) is currently pursuing a graduate
degree in aeronautical science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University specializing in aviation/aerospace
safety. For the past two years, he has been working at
the Johnson Space Center, providing risk management
support for NASA’s transition and retirement of the
Space Shuttle Program. While attending Embry-Riddle,
David also received his private pilot license with singleengine
land, multi-engine land, and instrument airplane
privileges. His short term goal is to finish the requirements
for the commercial pilot endorsement, so that he can
further enhance his career opportunities in the aviation/
aerospace industry.
Robert B. Callahan (MBA ’06) just can’t stop going
to school. After completing his MBA at SHSU, Robert
entered the Master of Science program in Finance at
SHSU and also entered the Bush School of Government
and Public Service, finishing a graduate certificate in Advanced
International Affairs at Texas A&M University.
He plans to finish the MS in Finance in 2010. “I love taking
classes even at the age of 51. Don’t ever stop learning —
words to grow by.”
Katie Loh (’07) married Morris Chang in May 2008.
Katie is currently working at Pet Smart and continues
to work on her master’s degree at Texas State University
in San Marcos. Morris works at an IC Design company
based in Austin.
Jennifer Stafford (’07) has been with The Shaw Group
(Energy and Chemicals division) for one year as a Financial
Analyst.
Ahmed M. Ebeid (MBA ’07) is a Capital Expenditure
& Engineering Projects manager for Holcim, the second
largest cement producing company in the world. In
2008, Ahmed completed the certification for Portfolio
& Program Management to complement his Project
Management Professional license. He and his family
have relocated to St. Louis as he is in charge of managing
the largest one-line cement plant in the world in Sainte
Genevieve, MO.
Eric M. Aldape (’08) holds a management position
at Pappasito’s Mexican Restaurant on I-45 North in
Houston.
Cody Ault (’08) was recently promoted to a management
position with the logistics/reselling company that he
has worked for since his graduation. Cody has consistently
been one of the top 5 performers for the company based
on productivity. He and his fiancée, Rachel, will be getting
married in October. They are in the process of buying a
house so “life is busy.”
Wade Pate (’08) has joined the Advanced Development
Program (ADP) at Ingersoll Rand. The program
is a two-year executive training program that consists of
two one-year rotations. Wade is doing his first rotation in
Mocksville, NC as an operations ADP. He worked six
months as a production scheduler for cast iron manufacturing
and is now working on inventory control. Wade has

facing our nation.” Within the next four months, Wade
will be taking his second assignment within the program
at an unknown location. Wade talks with fellow Bearkat
Ryan Griffin often and says Ryan is doing well in San
Antonio.
Peter Solana (’08) has joined the Army and is in basic
training at Ft. Jackson, SC. He will begin officer training
at Ft. Benning, GA in April 2009.
Joseph Thornhill (’08) is pursuing a career in elder care
management and is currently enrolled in the University of
Florida Gerontology Certification Program while working
as an Administrator in Training at an assisted living
facility in The Woodlands.
James Venuti (’08) is working as a staff accountant for
Asset Plus Corporation, a nation wide property management
company specializing in student housing. He also has
started a custom stationery business with his wife. They
provide custom invitations and other paper products.

Chris and Jackie Brossman Ashorn (BS ’05) welcomed
their first child, Kolbi Elizabeth, into the world
on April 15, 2009. Proud grandparents are Dr. Leroy

and Jackie are currently working on their MBA degrees
at SHSU. Dr. Ashorn has been serving COBA as Interim
Dean since October 2008 and has been with the College

their third child, Samuel Dawson Harris, born on March
26, 2009. Brad, Katie and family live in Allentown, PA.
Andrew Robinson (BBA’01, MBA’03) and Shani
Nance Robinson (BBA’01, MBA’03) proudly announced
the birth of their second son, Tayton Reginald
Robinson, born on March 23. Shani was a Lecturer in the
Department of Accounting from fall 2004 to the end of
the spring semester 2007. She is now working on her PhD
in Accounting at the University of North Texas.

Society for Human Resource
Management Approves SHSU Program
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Association recently announced that
the Sam Houston State University BBA in Human Resource Management degree fully aligns with the
recommended requirements for HR Degree programs as outlined in the SHRM Curriculum. By meeting
the rigorous standards set by SHRM, within a business context, students majoring in Human Resource
Management at SHSU are better prepared to practice HR in a variety of sectors such as for-profit, nonprofit,
government, or private organizations.
Having met SHRM’s high standards, a link to the Sam Houston State Human Resource Management
program has been added to the association’s website. The Department of Management/Marketing faculty
is to be commended for the exceptional curriculum planning that earned this national recognition.
Dr. Pamela Zelbst, assistant professor in
the Department of Management & Marketing, was
the lead author on the paper which won the Best
Paper Award in the Technology, Innovation, and
Operations Management track at the recent meeting
of the Southwest Academy of Management in
Oklahoma City. The paper entitled “An Improved
Cluster Concentration Typology for Examining
the Fit Between Organization Needs and Cluster
Concentration Characteristics in Location Decision
Making” was co-authored with Dr. Vic Sower,

retired professor of management from SHSU, and
Dr. Greg Frazier of UTA. Reviewers for this paper
stated that this research was a stellar effort and
“one of the most unique papers presented with the
potential to start a useful dialog in the academic
community interested in this subject.”
Dr. Vic Sower, recently retired professor
of management, received the 2008-2009 Distinguished
Service Award for the Southwest Academy
of Management (SWAM) at their recent conference
in Oklahoma City. Dr. Sower has served

Friday, April 24, College of Business faculty
and staff welcomed family, friends and alumni to
the annual COBA Awards Ceremony where 82
scholarships were awarded, totaling $149,100 in
scholarship funds for fall 2009 and spring 2010
semesters. Dr. Kathy Hill, professor of general
business, presided over the ceremony with Dr. Leroy
Ashorn recognizing special guests and faculty.
Several donors were on hand to present the
recipients with their scholarships. In attendance
were Randy Pollard and TSUS Regent Tricia
Pollard. Randy presented the Randy Pollard Scholarships
in Memory and Honor of Elwood Parkhill.
Mona Barragan presented the Mona Erica Barragan
Ethics Scholarship and Roland Hendricks,
representing the The Dow Chemical Company
presented six Dow Chemical SHSU Alumni Scholarships
and the Texas Dow Employees Credit Union
Scholarship in Honor of Board Member Roland
Hendricks. The American Bank Scholarship was
presented by John Hendricks and COBA retiree
Dr. Vic Sower presented the Ed & Daphne Sower
Memorial Scholarship, in honor of his parents. John
Hardy and son, Joel, presented the Edward James
Crawford Scholarship, the J. N. & Vennie Crawford
Scholarships, and the Rayford Lacey Hardy & Margie
Crawford Hardy Scholarship. Mrs. Jean Neal
presented the Jean D. Neal Scholarship, established
in honor of her late father-in-law.

“The Economic
Report”
Imagine our surprise and great pleasure
when we were approached by the producers
of The Economic Report, hosted by Greg
Gumbel and aired on FoxNews, to be the
subject of an upcoming episode as part of
the show’s Business Education for a Global
Economy series on Making the Right Choice in
a Management or MBA Program. Video taping
was done in April and we were informed
that the piece will air sometime this summer.

Dr. Joseph Kavanaugh, associate professor
of management, was named the “Educator of the
Year” by the Southwest Case Research Association.
The announcement was made at the Federation of
Business Disciplines meeting in Oklahoma City
in February.

some were not currently hiring, they respect
our school and its graduates enough to want to
maintain a relationship with us. In March, two
of our own, Regent Charlie Amato and Gary
Dudley were honored by Beta Gamma Sigma,
the premier national business honor society, as
winners of the national Entrepreneurship Medallion.
There were only five medallions awarded
nation-wide. Additionally, College alumni Jill
Vaughan and “Bud” Haney were recognized as
James E. Gilmore Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma
Chapter Honorees. Also during March video was
shot on campus and at The University Center
in The Woodlands that is being used in a news
story to be broadcast as part of The Economic
Report sometime during the summer. In April
the College held its annual awards program
during which 82 scholarships totaling $149,100

were awarded to some of the best students in the
College. Also during April, the PGA of America
conducted a very successful review of the PGA
Golf Management program calling it a “model
program.” All during the semester our faculty
continued their excellent work in research by
publishing numerous articles in professional and
business journals and making many presentations
at professional meetings – it is with this research
that they are able to bring the most current and
relevant material to the classroom.
Again on behalf of the entire college, I
want to thank each and every one of you for your
continued support which is so vital to our continued
success in the development of the future
leaders of the business community, the region,
the state, and the nation. It is only with the assistance
of you, our loyal alumni and friends, that
we will be able to continue to achieve our mission
of excellence and to grow to better serve all of our

Premier PGA
Golf Management
Program
On Wednesday, April 22 and Thursday,
April 23 a team from the PGA of America came to
Sam Houston State University to review the PGA
Golf Management program. The team began their
evaluation with a breakfast meeting with Dean
Leroy Ashorn, President Gaertner and other top
university administrators. The team met with
faculty throughout the university who instruct the
PGA Golf Management-specific courses. The team
continued their visit with a lunch meeting with
twelve current PGA Golf Management students.
In addition, the team visited Raven Nest Golf Club
and evaluated the policies and procedures in place
in both the golf shop and maintenance areas and
spent time in the state-of-the art Mike McIver Golf
Training Center. The team also visited the PGA
Golf Management Golf Club Design and Repair
Lab located in the College of Business Administration.
Throughout the day the team also met with
the PGA Golf Management staff to review the
self-study prepared by Director Richard Ballinger
prior to the Evaluation Visit.
On the final day of the Evaluation visit
the team met with Dean Leroy Ashorn, Richard
Ballinger and other University administrators to
conduct an exit interview. The team stated that
Sam Houston State University has the model PGA
Golf Management program in the country. The
team was extremely impressed with the support
and knowledge that the university administration
displayed during the visit. The PGA also
mentioned the engaging nature of the faculty
and the willingness and enthusiasm shown in the
classroom. The team made special mention of the
quality of the operation at Raven Nest Golf Club
and the Mike McIver Golf Training Center. Sam
Houston State University boasts one of the best
Playing Ability Test pass rates in the country
and has record keeping and office administration
second to none. The self-study that was submitted
to the PGA of America was also deemed to be the
“best that they had ever seen.” The team continued
their praise by mentioning the quality of students
enrolled in the program. When questioned about
their favorite part of the PGA Golf Management
program the students unanimously stated that it
is the staff.

Department of General Business & Finance Hosts International Conference
“This was one of the best conferences I’ve attended. Very well done.” This
anonymous testimonial exemplifies the enthusiastic reactions of 90 participants
at SHSU’s First Annual General Business Conference. The conference was held
on the university’s campus, April 17-18, 2009. Fifteen tracks in the business
disciplines featured speakers from the United States, the United Kingdom,
Lebanon, Pakistan, Taiwan, Tunisia, and Malaysia.
The conference succeeded in meeting three primary objectives. First,
over $10,000 was raised for General Business and Finance student scholarships.
Second, the top papers in finance, business communication, business law,
taxation, technology, information systems, human resource management, and
investments will be published in Allied Academies journals. Third, academicians
and students were provided an opportunity to share intellectual contributions
across the business disciplines through presentations.
Phil Wedemeyer, a partner in Grant Thornton LLP, gave the keynote
address. He discussed the major elements of the current global financial crisis
and where these events may lead in terms of regulation, accounting standards,

and governance. Audience members listened closely to his predictions about the
accounting profession and business education.
Conference sessions highlighted research in business communication,
business law, tax issues, equity markets, dividends and stock price behavior, the
impact of the current credit crisis on banks, financial reporting issues, organizational
behavior, marketing and management, information technology, and
globalization. In addition, student papers explored international business and
financial topics. Many papers were cross-disciplinary, underscoring the value of
collaboration among the business disciplines.
Visitors noted the convenient location of the campus and its hotel. Despite
rainy conditions, they appreciated the beautiful buildings and grounds, especially
historic Austin Hall, where Friday evening’s banquet was held.
The SHSU Department of General Business and Finance hosted the
conference. Conference events were underwritten by the SHSU College of
Business Administration, Cengage Publishing, and McGraw-Hill.

represented as distinguished alumni, Advisory Council
members, faculty and staff joined in the celebration of
General Sam Houston’s birthday on Tuesday, March 3, at
the Bob Bullock Museum in Austin. Governor and Mrs.
Rick Perry were the special guests and Dr. James Gaertner,
President of SHSU, presented First Lady Anita Perry with
a donation to help with the restoration of the Governor’s
mansion that was destroyed by fire. In attendance were
COBA Advisory Council members Ronny Carroll, Bud
Haney and wife Joan, Charles “Chuck” Jones, former
Speaker of the House, Gib Lewis and Tommy and Mary
Ann Metcalf. Also enjoying the festivities were Texas State
University System Regent Trisha Pollard and husband
Randy, former dean of COBA, Dr. R. Dean Lewis and
wife Betty, Dr. Philip Morris, Chair of the Department
of Accounting and Carol Shaw, Assistant to the Dean of
COBA. General Sam Houston himself would have been
very pleased with the event and all the alumni who came
to celebrate his birthday.
