Welcome <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>g 2009 edition of <strong>the</strong><br />

make us aware of any changes which have occurred<br />
<strong>in</strong> your personal and professional lives <strong>in</strong> order for<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Muehsam</strong> will assume his new duties on<br />
August 1, 2009, at which time I will return <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
office of Associate Dean and Coord<strong>in</strong>a<strong>to</strong>r of Graduate<br />
Studies. We have begun <strong>the</strong> transition <strong>to</strong> ensure<br />
that <strong>the</strong> College cont<strong>in</strong>ues its quest for excellence<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> areas of teach<strong>in</strong>g, research, and service <strong>to</strong> all<br />
stakeholders. As you will see <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> article about <strong>the</strong><br />
new Dean, <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Muehsam</strong> is return<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> his roots<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Fall 2008 and early Spr<strong>in</strong>g 2009<br />
semesters <strong>the</strong> College partnered with Profiles International<br />
(www.profiles<strong>in</strong>ternational.com), “Bud”<br />
Haney’s firm, <strong>to</strong> conduct <strong>the</strong> Texas Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Challenges<br />
Survey. The purpose of <strong>the</strong> survey was “<strong>to</strong> learn<br />
how Texas companies are ris<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> challenge of<br />
a severe economic downturn.” A comment made <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> report (which was published <strong>in</strong> March) that was<br />
very complementary of <strong>the</strong> college’s programs states,<br />
“Smart Texas companies are hir<strong>in</strong>g recent graduates<br />
who got hands-on, real-world experience through<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternships. The bank<strong>in</strong>g program at <strong>Sam</strong> Hous<strong>to</strong>n<br />
<strong>State</strong> University, for example, provides students with<br />
actual bank<strong>in</strong>g experience. Upon graduation, <strong>the</strong>se<br />
young professionals have been tested <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> real<br />
world, solv<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess problems, work<strong>in</strong>g with a<br />
cha<strong>in</strong> of command and prov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
workplace.”<br />
Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> Career Fair and end<strong>in</strong>g<br />
with <strong>the</strong> Academic Awards program, <strong>the</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>g<br />
2009 semester has been a very successful semester<br />
for <strong>the</strong> College. Even <strong>in</strong> somewhat try<strong>in</strong>g economic<br />
times <strong>the</strong> semester credit hours produced <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
college grew by 3.26 percent over <strong>the</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>g 2008<br />
