Saugerties, New York –
With the exception of a little rain,
one could not have asked for
much better weather for this year’s
NEDA Fall Festival, held September
13-18 at the HITS-on-the-Hudson
show grounds. It may have been a bit
chilly for riders, but it was perfect
weather for horses – and it was dry.
The Fall Festival features multiple
competitions – a breed show, the
U.S. Dressage Federation Region 8
Championships and two international
competitions, the CDI and the CPEDI
performance competitions. This year’s
big winner in the CDI competition was
a western invader who made her way
north from New Jersey after competing
in the National Dressage Championships
the week before. Adrienne Lyle, longtime
working student of Olympian
Debbie McDonald won the popular
CDI Grand Prix Freestyle at NEDA
with her partner Wizard and a score of
74.925. The 26-year-old rider, who is
based in Idaho, faltered a bit in
Friday’s CDI Grand Prix but learned
from her mistakes and came back
strong.
The NEDA CDI was the first East
Coast CDI competition for Lyle and
Wizard, a 12-year-old Oldenburg
gelding owned by Peggy Thomas. “It’s
a whole new experience being here
competing against all these people –
some of the best competitors we have
– and being able to put faces to names
I just read about,” Lyle said. “The
volume of horses is a lot bigger than
what we’re used to out West.”
After NEDA, Lyle and Wizard
made their way south to Dressage at
Devon before heading back West.
They are aiming to qualify for the
Selection Trials next spring that will
pick the U.S. Dressage Team for the
London Olympics next summer. Their
freestyle win at the NEDA CDI put
them ahead of such leading international
competitors as Catherine
Haddad Staller, who was on a trip
back to the U.S. from her base in
Ijust returned from NEDA Fall
Festival at Saugerties – volunteering,
not competing. This year for the
first time the Para Equestrian national
championships were held in conjunction
with the fall show. Now that is a
lot to manage, five overlapping shows
running: Breed championships, Open
dressage show, USDF Region 8 championships,
FEI CDI competition, and
CPEDI National championships.
Whew! Beth Jenkins managed the
additional challenges of the Para
Equestrian discipline with aplomb. It
was exciting (and humbling) to be able
to watch top Para Equestrian competitors
from all across the country compete
in Saugerties, and the competition
was fierce. The competitors were
enthusiastic and every bit as driven
and disciplined in their riding as any
of other competitors at the show. A
good influence on the show as a whole
and an honor for NEDA to host this
national event.
Our army of volunteers personalized
the experience of riding at such a
large and competitive show, offering
encouragement and solace as appropriate
from whatever their vantage
point. Our volunteers are all horse
lovers and dressage enthusiasts, but
they have other lives as varied as you
can imagine. For example, my roommate,
whom I had not met previously,
is an undersea defense systems engineer
for the Navy and has been scribing
at the NEDA Fall Show for 12
years. The variety of their backgrounds
was surely matched by the
competitors who remained unfailingly
courteous and grateful for the volunteer
participation. I served as a gate
President’s Message
Notes from Saugerties
 BY KATHERINE MCHUGH, NEDA PRESIDENT
steward for the Third Level Region 8
Championships Class for Adult
Amateurs, and nearly every one of
them thanked me for volunteering, as
they left the arena!
And then there is the generosity of
the dressage community. Lisa Curry
Mair, a Third Level Championship
rider and accomplished folk art painter
(http://www.currymairdesigns.com) who
lives near the Green Mountain Horse
Association in Vermont, created an
original artwork depicting the GMHA
grounds, turned it into a poster and
sold the poster with all the proceeds to
benefit the GMHA Flood Recovery
effort. No New England dressage competitor’s
dance card is complete without
a trip to this beautiful venue, with
children and dogs taking advantage of
the clear cold stream running right
through the grounds, surrounded by
the green hills of Vermont. That
stream turned into a raging torrent
during Tropical Storm Irene’s visit to
Vermont and rerouted itself, taking out
large portions of the grounds, not to
mention cross-country jumps, stall
doors and mats, pedestrian bridges,
portapotties and anything else in its
path. Insurance does not cover any of
the damage. All September events
were cancelled - the first event not
cancelled will be the fall dressage
show October 1-2. Lisa’s efforts raised
over $1,600 for GMHA. If you didn’t
get one of her charming posters there,
you can see and purchase it online at
http://www.gmhainc.org/irenedamage.h
tml, where you may also make a direct
donation.
Claudia Tarlov, longtime NEDA
member and dressage trainer, learned
of the plight of many Vermont farmers
who lost pasture land, buildings, livestock
and their entire winter hay supply
to Irene. She offered to fill her
trailer with hay donated by competitors
at the Fall Show and drive the hay
to Vermont for distribution. Her story
and amazing results are detailed in an
article elsewhere in this issue of the
Tip. Thank you to all who have made
a difference for horse owners and
lovers in Vermont. Z
Congratulations to
McHugh on Her USDF
NEDA Members would like to
send out a huge CONGRATU-
her goal of earning USDF Silver
earn her medal, she WON her PSG
USA Team Achieves First at CPEDI3*
Saugerties, NY - September 18, 2011
Intensity, impulsion, power are three words that defined
Sunday's Para-Equestrian Individual Test competition at
the 2011 NEDA Fall Festival of Dressage. Sunday was the
last day of the CPEDI 3* and it was the championship day
for the 2011 USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National
Championship. After Saturday's
Freestyle only a tenth of a point
separated Jonathan Wentz and Dale
Dedrick for the National
Championship. Following an exceptional
day of tests Wentz earned the
scores he needed to earn the
national championship. Only .308
behind Wentz was Dale Dedrick
and Bonifatius who garnered the highest score of the day
from Judge E, Anne Prain of France, a 75%. Dedrick's percentage
secured the reserve championship accolade. In the
well this weekend and it is very
exciting to see so many new horses.
The growth that is happening is
CPEDI3* Team competition Para-Equestrians from USA,
Canada, Ireland, Mexico, and Bermuda competed in Grades
Ia-IV under judges Anne Prain of France, Kjell Myhre of
Norway, and Carlos Lopes of Portugal. The USA achieved
the top ranking with team members Jonathan Wentz, Mary
Jordan, Wendy Fryke, and Rebecca Hart.
Hart was the third place finisher
in the 2011 USEF Para-
Equestrian Dressage National
Championships in addition to supporting
the USA Team competition.
After three days of tests Hart was
delighted with Lord Ludger. She
noted, "I was really happy with
LoLu; this was his first major competition where he had to
be on it three days in a row. He handled the pressure and
he even stepped up to the plate for me."
The judges’ cards from Saturday gave the Para-
Equestrians big goals for Sunday. Hart explained, "They
want to see power, energy, and moving forward. I was there
a few times and LoLu said, ‘too much.’ There were a few
little bobbles on my test today that I would have loved to
fix. When we were coming into an extension I asked for a
little too much and he was like, ‘oh, canter’ and I said ‘no,
trot,’ and he came right back to me. I also got a little over
driving at the walk and I needed to settle because the walk
was already big enough."
Keeping a consistent pace while creating impulsion
was important in Wentz's rides on both horses during the
Individual Tests. Wentz acknowledged, "Yesterday I did
well on Gabe (NTEC Jabriel) but we went really fast and
got a little wild. That type of ride was not a good foundation
to build on to attain our final goal, the Olympics. Today
we worked on keeping a slower pace while riding a more
precise test and keeping his head up. We lost some points
but it was a good foundation ride to build on."
Wentz continued, "Both horses today were wonderful
and their extensions were beautiful. Richter was giving it Jonathan Wentz and Richter Scale.
all today and I could tell he was tired. I had to work hard to keep him nice and forward but I couldn't get too pushy
NEDA Fall Festival
because there is a fine line between going forward and
keeping him supple."
Jonathan Wentz earned the national championship followed
by Dale Dedrick in reserve and Rebecca Hart taking
home the third place ribbon. Wentz added more accolades
earning the fourth place with NTEC Jabriel and Wendy
Fryke followed for fifth place. In the sixth position was
Mary Jordan. As a Grade IV rider Jordan also represented
the USA team.
Jordan had an exciting week overall, the owner of
Sebastian, Deecie Denison, gave Jordan the opportunity to
ride this horse just one week before the CPEDI3*. Jordan
had a short week to qualify to ride at the CPEDI3*. Jordan
noted, "I brought him home on Friday, I rode Saturday, had
bladder surgery on Monday, rode Wednesday, and brought
Sebastian to Saugerties on Thursday. With only my fourth
ride on this horse we received our qualifying score. Both of
my horses didn't put a foot wrong all weekend."
Jordan was looking forward to the Team competition
when she was chosen for the U.S.A. Team this week. She
smiled, "I was thrilled to be selected to ride on the team. It
really motivated me to earn good scores for the team. This
weekend has been a great team experience and a wonderful
team building opportunity."
For Team Canada this weekend's competition was also
about growth. Chef d'Equipe Elizabeth Quigg noted, "This
weekend was good exposure for those riders who are coming
up through our ranks. We brought some less experienced
horse and rider combinations to really test them on
the international scene. This CPEDI also gave everyone a
chance to have the team experience. It is really important
to get these riders and horses into an environment that is
unfamiliar." After this weekend Team Canada is planning
to travel to Florida to compete at the Jim Brandon
Equestrian Center and then onto Del Mar, CA for the 2012
Dressage Affaire
Para-Equestrian competitors have an exciting year to
look forward to. In January, the first CPEDI3* in
Wellington, FL will occur. Many Para-Equestrians will be
traveling to either Florida, Mexico, California, or even
Portugal to gain more experience in the international show
scene before the 2012 the London Paralympics.
The 2011 NEDA Fall Festival of Dressage and the
2011 USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National
Championship would not have been possible without the
support of sponsors, volunteers, the NEDA horse show
managers, USEF, equestrians, and family members. The
USPEA would like to thank NEDA for providing a beautiful
facility and for hosting the Para-Equestrians at a spectacular
horse show. Z
NEDA is Pleased to Announce the Volunteer Winners
from the NEDA Fall Festival
For the past few years Leslie de Grandmaison, of Salt
Box Farm in Auburn, NH, has been donating Volunteer
Gift Certificates to be given to individuals who volunteer at
the NEDA Spring Show, THE Farm Schooling Shows and
the NEDA Fall Festival. Each winner receives a $25
Dover Saddlery Gift Certificate, thanks to Leslie.
Norman Levine – Head Steward
Now, that’s a big job! Norman was
on grounds from Monday, helping on
grounds crew, thru Sunday afternoon,
coordinating and training Stewards for
the Breed and Performance Shows.
Thank you, Norman!
Helen van der Voort – Jack of all Trades
Helen was a wonderful, energetic
volunteer for 5 days this year. She
helped on the Grounds Crew Tuesday
morning, then scored for the Breed
Show on Tuesday afternoon and all day
Wednesday, scribed for the Dressage
Show on Thursday and Friday, and for
the ParaEquestrian CPEDI on
Saturday. Thank you, Helen!
Paula Adelson – A most willing and
reliable scribe
Paula worked the show from
Tuesday thru Saturday as scribe for the
Breed Show, the Performance Show
and the CPEDI. Paula’s last assignment
was to be on stand by at 7:45
Saturday morning just in case a scribe
was late. Thankfully, all Saturday
scribes were in place and accounted
for at 8:00 AM and Paula was on the
road and on her way to meet other
commitments. Thank you, Paula!
Polly Ingham – Twice as much fun
Polly had so much fun volunteering
for two days in 2010 that she
signed up to scribe four days this year.
Polly scribed for the Perfomance show
on Th, F and S, and for the CPEDI on
Sunday. Thank you, Polly!
NEDA would like to thank Leslie for supporting NEDA
and for recognizing the dedication and generosity of all the
NEDA Volunteers. The NEDA Fall Festival is a success
year after year because of the experience and the commitment
of our fantastic volunteer team.
This year’s Fall Festival Volunteer Winners are:
Fall Festival. She helps announce the
Breed Show (T, W and Th AM) and was
the CDI/CPEDI Jog Announcer
Thursday afternoon/evening. That was
a very long day. For many years now,
on Friday, Sandra is NEDA’s Ring 1
Steward for the CDI. On Saturday
mornings, Sandra is usually on standby,
just in case, a steward is late or
missing. This year, Sandra agreed to
stay longer and worked the entire
Saturday morning shift as Ring 1
Steward for the CPEDI. Thank you,
Sandra!
Nelsie Vincze – A Newcomer to the Team
The 2011 NEDA Fall Festival was
Nelsie’s first opportunity to volunteer
for NEDA and she had so much fun
that she is already looking forward to
volunteering at the 2012 NEDA Spring
Show. Nelsie jumped into the dressage
show fray, Saturday afternoon, as “On
deck” Steward for Rings 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Being an “On deck” steward for four
rings is a lot of information to process
and it requires a lot of interaction with
others. Nelsie was excellent at both.
Thank you, Nelsie!
Micah Andrews – Two are generally,
but not always, better than one
Luckily we matched Micah up with
Nelsie as “On deck” stewards on
Saturday afternoon. The two very
capable young women learned to do
the job together. Micah was so confident
that by Sunday she was covering
“on deck” by herself. What a way to
grow! Thank you, Micah.
I would like to take this opportunity
to thank every single Fall Festival volunteer.
The show cannot happen without
dedicated individuals who are willing
to be outside in the rain, cold and
hot sun so the competitors can have a
fair and fun event. Thank you to all
who made the show a success! Z
The Yin and Yang of It
Arthur Kottas-Heldenberg Comes to New England
Hurricane Irene brought more to New England than high
winds and massive rainfall. Preceding it by a day,
Arthur Kottas-Heldenburg arrived at Kenridge Farm in
Kensington, NH, for a 4 day clinic on Friday, August 26th.
Both events were not anticipated by much time, but Herr
Kottas was, unlike Irene, fortuitous. Despite the ominous
forecasts, the clinic was uninterrupted by the weather, and
Herr Kottas, or Arthur, as he was quick to encourage participants
to call him, was the far more potent force. Irene was
downgraded to a mere storm by a master of dressage, and a
brilliant teacher.
Irene Greenberg organized the
clinic in exemplary fashion, having
been informed by a dressage friend in
Canada that Arthur had 2 days free,
and possibly 4, after a clinic in
Toronto. With very little time at her
disposal, she contacted as many people
as possible, utilizing Facebook
and the NEDA website. The results
were excellent; the clinic was filled
with a combination of dressage professionals
and individual riders, and
Arthur was able to show his talent in
instructing a varied group of riders, and demonstrating the training
protocol with a heterogeneous group of horses.
It was immediately evident that Arthur has an inner core
of classical dressage principles with which he would teach
and train, applying to each rider and horse. He exemplified
the commitment to the concept that these principles should
be applied at the very beginning of a horse’s training to make
it easier for the horse to advance to the higher levels of collection
while retaining the suppleness and elasticity of the
basic gaits that we see, or hope to see, in young horses. He
consistently urged the riders and auditors to consider the
“why” as well as the “how” of training: to lengthen the stride
of the gait, the back must be relaxed and the movement
should swing through it; to allow this to happen, the rider
should lighten the seat and allow the horse to stretch its
topline. Without a relaxed back that can swing, the engagement
cannot develop. Without the engagement, collection
becomes a shortening of the gait without a lowering of the
croup. Without the raising of the forehand, the lowering of
the croup is not possible without tension, which destroys the
gait. Yin and yang. The horse should be ridden with a positive
encouragement to contract the inside muscles of his body,
i The New England Dressage Association j
 BY ALEXANDRA DANE
He exemplified the commitment to
the concept that these principles should
be applied at the very beginning of a
horse’s training to make it easier for the
horse to advance to the higher levels of
collection while retaining the suppleness
and elasticity of the basic gaits that we
see, or hope to see, in young horses.
so that movements such as shoulder-in and half-pass are not
initiated by an inside rein. To do so requires that the rider
allow the stretching and relaxation of the outside muscles of
the horse’s body: yin and yang. Most important of all, judging
by the earnest and heartfelt emphasis Arthur repeatedly
placed on it: the horse provokes a rider’s reaction, just as a
rider provokes the horse’s reaction – yin and yang. To ignore
this principle is to ignore classical dressage training.
Through all the intense teaching and focus on educating
the riders while improving the horses, Arthur retained and
demonstrated a whimsical sense of humor and an empathy for
his riders and horses. While I
was not able to be present at all
sessions, the reaction that I heard
was positive and very enthusiastic.
Arthur demonstrated in-hand
work on Saturday evening; I regret
that I yielded to my husband’s
heartfelt pleas that I not venture
out, and did not attend. Still,
Arthur worked several horses in
hand on all days of the clinic, so
that I have a feeling for what his
work sets out to accomplish.
What makes him a master is his ability to sense that the horse
is within a stride or two of giving the correct response, and
then praising him AS he is doing so; a training aid that is
more than effective, it is a game-changer.
Arthur Kottas-Heldenberg will be returning for clinics at
Kenridge Farm. He enjoyed working with the participants,
and found New England a hospitable and welcoming venue.
We are grateful that we will have the opportunity to have him
available in the future. The information will be posted on the
NEDA website, and you can contact Irene at irene.e.greenberg@gmail.com.
Help Bring the Green Mountain Horse Association
Back from Hurricane Irene
It all started when Hurricane
Irene blew in on August 28th.
My horses were happily munching
on hay in their stalls in our
cozy 200 year old Weathersfield,
Vermont barn. The power didn’t
even go out at our house. Yes. It
was a lot of rain. But the wind
didn’t blow and our place stayed
relatively dry, so we thought all
was good.
Monday morning we awoke to
news of massive flooding statewide.
I checked my email and
Facebook. Horrifying pictures
were coming in. Bridges were washed out. Houses, barns and
fields were swept away. One of the most devastating videos,
for me, was the clip my friend, Garry, posted showing his
drive past the Green Mountain Horse Association in South
Woodstock on Sunday afternoon. That quiet little brook
which I’ve crossed so many times to get from the Dust Bowl
to the Walker Ring had jumped its banks and the water was
at least waist deep all the way from the Dust Bowl to “D”
Barn. The barns, parking areas, bridges, cross country fences
and vehicles were submerged or floating all along Route 106,
all the way to the Upwey Barn.
By Wednesday the shock of the whole thing had settled
in. Now what? I am a painter. When I have to work things
Hurricane Irene took it’s toll on the GMHA grounds.
out in my head, answers
come in pictures. GMHA
was calling to me. I spent
the next three days creating
a painting of the way
GMHA should be. I
painted sunny skies,
grassy fields, horses
doing dressage, cross
country, jumping and
driving.
Then it occurred to
me that maybe this painting
could help GMHA.
The company that does
GMHA’s printing offered to print it as a poster for the cost
of the paper. Beth Jenkins offered to let me sell them at the
NEDA Fall Festival as a Fundraiser. My mother volunteered
to help out at the show, since she knew I’d be
focused on riding my tests. GMHA gave us their display
wall. Everyone has been on board with this project from
the get-go.
We sold posters on Saturday and Sunday and raised
more than $1600 to go towards GMHA’s Flood Recovery
Fund. Now the posters are available on GMHA’s website at
http://www.gmhainc.org/irenedamage.html . They are $40
and every penny goes directly to rebuilding GMHA’s buildings
and grounds. I will be at the Pasta Dinner and Auction
Brookside Stable of Vermont Suffers Severe
Damage from Hurricane Irene
To those of you who don’t know me, my name is Ann
Brown from Brookside Stables in Wilmington, Vermont.
Our farm has been owned and operated by three generations
on land that has been in the family for over 100 years. Our
main goal is to provide solid instruction for youth from the
very start of their horse career and to assist the everyday
rider with practical common sense horsemanship, to create a
better partnership with their horse. My daughter Melissa
Elliot, Shelby Lawrence (ShelbyLoo’s Ponies), and I together
have 21 horses here on our property and currently offer lessons,
training, and boarding year round.
Like many others in Vermont, August 28th was a day we
will never forget. We are in a low-lying area and though our
barn has never before flooded, we had between 3-6 feet of
water rise into our various buildings within an hour of the
first trickle. When we realized the possible extent of what
could be happening, we immediately started moving our
horses to evacuate. With only a 3-horse trailer and water
waist deep, we knew trailering to a
nearby farm was not nearly quick
enough. So several of us started taking
two each in hand and running them up
the road to safety. Amazingly, a neighboring
farm had an empty horse barn
with 12 standing stalls we could fill.
With six others already trailered elsewhere,
we had three left with no choice
but to place them in the trailer up the
hill from the barn while the water continued
to rise. I have never appreciated
the generosity and patience of every
single one of our animals more than that Sunday. We lost hay,
bedding, and all of our pasture fencing. We have soaked gritty
tack and equipment in piles. But every single one of our
animals is safe and sound. We are incredibly thankful that
the flooding came on during the day, and have to actively
stop saying ‘what if, what if’. I still can’t walk into my indoor
ring without feeling the tears coming back. We had 7 horses
temporarily stabled there during the storm and every time I
see the 6 ft water mark I stress over what they would have
went through if we were not able to get them out.
And then we have had angels appearing. We cannot give
enough thanks to the volunteers who have shown up in
droves to pitch in to get us back on our feet. Whether it is a
strong back to help us clean, tractors to help scrape the
sludge off the field, or donations of hay, such as the incredi-
ble and generous load of hay that Claudia from Turtle Hollow
Dressage brought down for us this week. Prior to the flood,
we had a large amount of grazing space with all of our horses
on fulltime grass. With the amount of contaminates floating
through our fields they are off limits until at least spring, putting
us far far over our estimated hay
usage for the year. When Claudia, who
has no ties to our barn, called to say
she was organizing a hay drive at the
dressage show, we were blown away by
the generosity. To anyone who pitched
“Help Vermont” Hay Drive Collects Bales
for Hurricane Victims at the NEDA Fall Festival
Chris, my son, and I greatly enjoyed
our time working with NEDA. I am
happy that Chris was able to put his
concerns of the Vermont Floods into
action, and we thank NEDA for the
opportunity to do that.
As you may have known, Chris
was in Vermont the Friday after Irene
hit Vermont. He drove past a horse
farm that was throwing out their hay,
putting their mud-caked blankets in
the sun to dry. When he read a notice
about this farm being in a state of great
difficulty, he called me to ask me what
we could do. I was leaving the next
morning on a flight to check our
Florida farm where we train in winter,
and told him I could not get hay there
immediately but would see what I
could do while away. After he contacted
me, I was thinking of my assignment
at NEDA FF where I was to steward.
I thought how lucky we were to
have come through Irene with a few
trees down, some fence repair and
power outages, and still be able to do
what we love at the Fall Festival and
how the Fall Festival dodged this bullet,
thought of the times it didn’t. At
this point I connected the number of
lucky people coming to NEDA FF, a
bale of hay each, and ideas came
together by the time I left for Orlando.
I contacted the Vermont Horse
Council and VT-Can, an animal support
non-profit that Kathy McHugh
recommended. The Vermont Horse
Council asked that the hay go to the
same farm Chris had passed, which
was known to be in great need, and
other horse farms could come to share
whatever we brought if needed. Thanks
to a very helpful show management
team and fast NEDA footwork by
BY CLAUDIA TARLOV, REPRINTED EMAIL TO FALL FESTIVAL COORDINATOR, BETH JENKINGS
email, we got permission to place my
trailer somewhere at the show to take
hay bale collections. Our theme was
“Buddy, can you spare a bale?” I did
what I could through Bulletin Boards,
emails, Facebook, and had to wait to
see what evolved. By the time we left
Colchester for Saugerties on Friday,
September 16, we had five bales in the
trailer. On Saturday Chris waited by
the trailer to accept hay. By Saturday
night, we had 34 bales. I sat with Chris
at dinner and thought, ‘I hope we can
fill half the trailer to give these people
a boost for a few weeks’. What happened
on Sunday was completely sur-
There was a house lying
on its side, like a tossed
Monopoly token. Cloth, paper
and other trash were hanging
in branches high up, brought
there by floodwater.
prising. While I stewarded, Chris continued
to take donations and stacked
them in my trailer. On my first break I
called him and the number had grown
to 50+. At lunch we had 86 bales and
some shavings and a bag of apples. I
returned to Arena 1 to finish stewarding
until 2:30 and when done there
headed back to the trailer to help wrap
up the hay effort. I arrived to a trailer
nearly full with 150 bales. People were
coming from everywhere with a bale
here, four there. The HITS suppliers
came by with two bales that someone
must have purchased and sent over.
The show farrier and several competitors
gave me dollars to send to the
Vermont Horse Council. As I was getting
ready to hook up the trailer, peo-
ple were riding by from their tests and
awards ceremonies and telling us to
come get another few bales at different
barns, which we continued to do until
4:30. The last bale was thrown in the
bed of the truck as we left the showgrounds,
and we were on the road for
VT with between 170 and 180 bales of
hay! We were at maximum capacity!
As we passed through Bennington
to Route 9, which leads to Wilmington,
our destination, the situation became
more obvious. Trees in the small river
that winds along 9 were ripped out by
the roots and stacked horizontally by
flood waters. A large bonfire with people
standing around it got our attention.
What they were burning were the
remains of the rear of their house.
Another house lost one of its floors, two
stories down to one. Getting closer to
Wilmington the damage was surreal:
many heating oil tanks lying on the
side of the river, wash outs that took
out the shoulders of the road and sometimes
the lane we were in which had
been quickly repaired. There was a
house lying on its side, like a tossed
Monopoly token. Cloth, paper and
other trash were hanging in branches
high up, brought there by floodwater.
The quaint Main Street businesses
were sadly damaged. One restaurant
was lit but empty, its owner sitting on
the front steps. The old breakfast
restaurant, Dot’s, a town favorite for 50
years had the foundation washed out
from under it, and will not reopen. A
handmade sign was tacked to the door,
We (heart) Dot’s. An iron handrail was
bent into a 90 degree angle by the
force of the water. All the buildings at
the main intersection sustained a com-
plete loss of the first floor, and most
likely the rest as well, as ‘condemned’
signs were on all the buildings, mostly
historic buildings. As we turned north
in the middle of the town, we saw boulders
in the middle of paddocks, corn
and hayfields, newly deposited by the
rushing water. Fields still had standing
water two weeks later. Between the
center of town and the farm we delivered
to just a few miles north, a woman
was swept from her car, one of the
casualties of the storm and a monument
was erected where she was lost.
This was a town that was so damaged,
and yet the signs of rebuilding have
already begun.
We arrived at Brookside Stables to
a group of four people, led by owner
Ann Brown, overwhelmed and grateful
by the size of the load. They were
incredibly thankful to the Show for letting
this come together, and showed us
their barn. The farm is a nice family
farm where the owners breed
i A Tip of the Hat j
The Brookside Stable tackroom covered
in a thick layer of stinky mud.
Some of their barn items
were washed away and
blankets were covered in
mud, as the receding flood
water left inches of silt on
everything. They lost their
fencing, including posts that
were pulled from the ground
by the rushing water.
Hafflingers and many young riders get
their start in all disciplines. It is the
type of place that many first learn to
ride. The horses were beautifully kept
and obviously part of their family. They
showed us pictures of the flood, which
filled their buildings in some places six
feet deep within a half hour of the first
sign of a problem. They had little time
to evacuate, and led their horses out
with water thigh-high. Some of their
barn items were washed away and blankets
were covered in mud, as the receding
flood water left inches of silt on
everything. They lost their fencing,
including posts that were pulled from
the ground by the rushing water. Ann
said that even if they were able to
replace fencing, they could not use the
fields for a while, since the water was
full of sewage, oil, chemicals and junk
that she would not expose the horses to.
She said she wondered how she could
continue doing what she has dreamt of
in her farm, and then people came forward
to help, including the NEDAsponsored
Hay Drive. She said knowing
that she had this encouragement made
her believe she could continue.
We left a bit tired, but glad we
could do something. When I got home,
my students heard about the results
and are now starting up a second drive
for hay, barn articles and grain to
deliver as soon as we can return. Ann
and other farm owners are in for a long
difficult winter.
Thanks for all you did to give us
the support to do this. I can tell it
meant a great deal to Chris too, as he
loves the area and was very concerned
for those he has met in the
Wilmington/Dover area. Cash donations
can continue through the Vermont
Horse Council website, who told me
last night that a surge of out-of-state
donations had come in which they
believe was from the NEDA FF publicity.
They wanted to use NEDA’s support
as an example to other organizations. It
was a very rewarding project! Z
