In a book I found at the Newberry Library in Chicago, written by David Atwood in 1879 (Wisconsin Historical
Collections Vol 8 1879), Paul Mooney was the second settler to make a settlement within the limits of the town of
Lemonweir. He made his location in the southeast part of the town between August 8, 1849 and the end of the
same year.
One of the stories that was handed down through the generations is: Paul Mooney came to the USA through the
Port of New York from Ireland with two of his brothers. They went separate ways and never saw each other
again. Another story was that Paul might have stopped along the way in Iowa. Who knows?

moved to Town of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin in spring, 1942. Kay, as she was known, graduated from Visitation
BVM Grade School (now called St. Mary's), Elm Grove, Wisconsin in 1951, and from St. John Cathedral HS,
Milwaukee in 1955, as did her father and sister, Mary. Kay was more outgoing as a child than her sister. Kay
had many friends, loved children, animals and birds. Kay preferred helping her mother inside the house, while
Mary would rather be outside, working in the yard. Kay, 5' 4 1/4" tall, with very thick, dark brown hair, had a
ready smile. Kay had many boyfriends, went to Proms and school dances, and still found time to babysit for
neighbors. She worked at the grocery store in Elm Grove as a checker. There she met Tom Mooney, a meat
cutter. When Kay and Tom became engaged, their boss had an engagement party for them. Kathleen Marie Bax
married Philip Thomas (Tom) Mooney on 11 Feb. 1956 at Visitation BVM Church, Elm Grove . After a trip to
Florida, they lived on W. Melvina St. in Milwaukee. Tom was born 1 July 1935 in Milwaukee, the youngest of
the five children of Erwin Paul & Emily (Netik) Mooney. In 1957, Tom took a job as a route delivery man for
Golden Gurnsey Dairy. In Nov. 1957, when his route was changed to Waukesha, Kay, Tom and infant son moved
to the Fountain Springs apartments there. Later, they bought a three bedroom ranch house on Estberg Ave. in
Waukesha, and were members of St. Mary's Church. In Jan. 1973, Kay began to babysit in her home. She could
not go out to work because their daughter, Erin, developed a serious heart condition within weeks after her birth,
and required constant care. Kay loved children, so it was easy for her to make this decision. In Dec. 1972, after
fifteen years with the Dairy, tom retired and bought part interest in a beer depot in Waukesha. Two years later, he
bought the business. Kay and Tom were separated in March 1975, and divorced in July 1977 in Waukesha. Tom
remarried, Kay did not. Kay was a dedicated mother and homemaker. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother when
her sons were scouts. She belonged to the Waukesha County Association for Retarded Citizens for many years.
As the years passed, Kay became more reticent and retreated to her home and children, she lost the spirit and
exuberance she had as a child and a young woman. She still loved her animals, had a dog and a bird, both of
which were treated as family members. The birds and squirrels came to her door for the tasty tidbits she'd always
have for them. She was a child care provider for eighteen years, and made many memorable experiences and had
a great love for "her children". Kay and Tom's daughter, Erin, was born with a hole in her heart, and is retarded
as a result of a heart attack at the age of two weeks. The hole was not detected until after the heart attack, which
caused her brain to be without oxygen for a time. She suffers from epilepsy and needs to wear hearing aids.
Kay always felt that Tom could not handle having a retarded daughter. Erin and her mother were very close; Kay
was with her 24 hours a day, to be there for the many seizures that occurred without warning. Kay told me that
Erin was born twenty years too early. By the 1980's, much progress had been made not only to detect heart
problems, but to treat them. Kay and I, her sister, were very close, talking on the phone several times daily, even
planned to buy a condo together one day. They were best of friends. Kay seemed to have had a premonition of
her death, and her great concern was Erin's welfare. Things became insurmountable to Kay, and as her will to go
forward lessened, she became more reclusive. She was a very proud woman, and true to her heritage, didn't
accept charity without repaying it in some way. Kay died in her home on 1 November 1991 at the age of fiftythree.
She was cremated, and her ashes are interred at St. Mary's Cemetery in Elm Grove, Wisconsin.
