36 Andover | Winter 2013 The Nutcracker Photos by Michael Lutch Graham Johns ’14 and Marion Kudla ’15 soar in their lead performances in the newly imagined Nutcracker, presented in Tang Theatre in early December. Carlos Hoyt (left), associate dean of students, charms the children with his magic as Heir Drosselmeyer, and the red-coated mice threaten Clara (below), played this night by Rochelle Wilbun ’13. The cast of more than 50 featured student and Andover area dancers, faculty members and faculty children, and two principals from the Boston Ballet.
Set in colonial Andover during the Revolutionary War, this Nutcracker was choreographed and directed by dance instructor Judith Wombwell (upper right). The Arabian dance (above) featured Suzanne Wang ’13 and David McCullough ’13. The Nutcracker (right) challenges the Mouse King, played by Michaela Barczak ’15. A towering “Mother Ginger”—Associate Dean of Admission Kevin Graber (below)—with her hoop skirt full of bonbon children, and other exquisite costumes by faculty member Billy Murray combine with theatre instructor Bruce Bacon’s dynamic setting in the old Abbot barn to showcase a unique and beautifully rendered performance.
