A highlight of Leaders’ Weekend, the<br />

inaugural induction ceremony of the<br />

Andover Alumni<br />

Andover Alumni Award of Distinction<br />

(AAAD) was held in Kemper Auditorium<br />

AwArd of distinction on Friday, November 9. The AAAD was<br />

conceived to annually recognize and<br />

honor alumni/ae of Phillips Academy or Abbot Academy<br />

who have served with distinction in their fields of endeavor.<br />

2012<br />

Opening remarks were provided by Alumni Council<br />

President Tom Beaton ’73, followed by presentation of the<br />

awards by five members of the AAAD Committee: Leslie<br />

Callahan ’68, committee chair; Susan Urie Donahue ’73;<br />

Michael Schmertzler ’70; Lee Sullivan ’68; and Alfred<br />

Blum ’62. Committee members Christopher Auguste ’76,<br />

Peter Hetzler, MD ’72, Sara Su Jones ’91, and Karen<br />

Humphries Sallick ’83 also were present. Head of School<br />

John Palfrey offered closing remarks before guests<br />

proceeded to Paresky Commons for dinner.<br />

George H.W. Bush ’42<br />

Honored for his service<br />

as a global leader<br />

On his 18th birthday—<br />

also the day of his<br />

Andover graduation—<br />

George H.W. Bush<br />

enlisted in the Navy,<br />

becoming the nation’s<br />

youngest Naval<br />

aviator in 1943. For<br />

an act of “heroism and extraordinary<br />

achievement in aerial flight,” Lt. j.g.<br />

Bush received the Distinguished Flying<br />

Cross award. He graduated from Yale<br />

in 1948.<br />

Key appointments and offices held<br />

prior to being elected president of the<br />

United States in 1988 include U.S.<br />

Ambassador to the United Nations,<br />

Chief of the U.S. Liaison Office in<br />

the People’s Republic of China, CIA<br />

director, and vice president for two<br />

terms under Ronald Reagan. As<br />

president, he oversaw the end of the<br />

Cold War, Iraq’s withdrawal from the<br />

Persian Gulf War, and the creation of<br />

the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty.<br />

He also created the Environmental<br />

Protection Agency in response to<br />

the 1989 Exxon-Valdez oil spill,<br />

initiated the Clean Air Act<br />

Amendments, and created the<br />

Americans with Disabilities Act.<br />

Bush was knighted in 1993 by Queen<br />

Elizabeth II for service to his country<br />

and the world, and was awarded the<br />

Eisenhower Medal for Leadership and<br />

Service (2003) and the Presidential<br />

Medal of Freedom (2011). In 2004, he<br />

co-created the Bush-Clinton Tsunami<br />

Relief Fund in response to the disaster<br />

in Southeast Asia.
