weLCome to the CataLog
We know that 23.5 million Americans abuse or are addicted to alcohol and
other drugs. It costs the nation $600 billion annually in lost productivity,
health and crime-related expenses. Alcoholics and addicts affect at least 4
other people. Worst of all, this disease destroys families.
In 1982, Betty Ford set out to change
the face of addiction by offering the
highest quality treatment in the most
compassionate setting. Services are
accessible to as many as possible,
especially other women facing this
disease! In her name, this challenge
continues.
As a not-for-profit that offers several
million dollars annually in financial
assistance and proudly underwrites a
unique Children’s Program and Medical
Education services, we want to answer
the question that many ask…
“What can I do to help?”
The CaTalog was created to provide an
array of options to anyone who wants to
make a difference.
You want to change the face of the
campus and lend your name to one of our
permanent structures… you can!
You want to assist another family discover
the possibilities of recovery… you can!
You want to help a child grow up
empowered about the disease, or help
a medical student learn the truth about
addiction… you can!
The CaTalog is for you! Whatever the
level or purpose, we want and need your
Changing Lives – One Patient at a time
Replenishing the Financial Assistance Fund remains the
highest priority for the Betty Ford Center Foundation.
It was Mrs. Ford’s personal mission to keep the Center
accessible to the greatest number of families. Without
this extra support, many people could not afford treatment
for addiction to alcohol and other drugs.
The Financial Assistance Fund at the Center provides
approximately $ 3 million annually in scholarships to
patients and family members. Each year, that means
that hundreds of families have access to programs of
hope and healing from the disease of addiction.
work of Betty Ford Center, our first suggestion is to
consider investing in the lives of those truly seeking
help. Your donation will support those who make a
commitment to treatment and also show evidence of
the financial need to receive treatment.
Listed below are several options of how your gift can
“It is a duty to give what you can when you can, no
matter how rich or poor you may be. At least that
is true for me. I could never give back as much as
I was given but I look at it this way, lots of smaller
donations can add up. I know that the demand
for assistance must be huge right now. As someone
who was able to get treatment at Betty Ford
Center because of the Financial Assistance
Fund, I feel a responsibility to donate as much
and as often as I can. It is a pleasure and joy
to do so! The payback: I KNOW that every dollar
is being used to help save a life, and, if I can
help that in some small way, I am GRATEFUL to be
allowed to do so!”
Changing Lives – One wOman at a time
One of Mrs. Ford’s priorities at Betty Ford
Center was to meet the unique needs of
women undergoing treatment for addiction
to alcohol and other drugs. Because of her
beliefs, treatment at the Center is genderspecific,
to address the separate issues that
face women.
To honor Mrs. Ford’s vision, dedication and
ongoing efforts, the Betty Ford Legacy
Fund was established in January 2005. This
permanent and endowed fund generates
interest and investment income to provide a
perpetual source of financial assistance for
women seeking treatment at the Center.
40% of all alcoholics and addicts are women, yet women only
ChiLdren’s Program
Changing Lives – One ChiLd at a time
Children are the most innocent victims to the
disease of addiction. Growing up in a home
where addiction is present, children learn to
adapt by following the “Don’t Talk,” “Don’t
Trust,” “Don’t Feel” attitude. In this way,
the problem carries on from generation to
generation.
The Betty Ford Children’s Program ad-
dresses the needs of children aged seven to
twelve who love someone who suffers from
addiction to alcohol or other drugs. Through
age-appropriate activities, children learn
that their parent’s disease is not their fault;
they are not alone; and, there is hope.
With ongoing support from donors to the
Children’s Program, we are able to bring the
program to children through schools and
community organizations. Additionally, by
offering community workshops and partnering
with like-minded organizations, the Children’s
Program raises awareness about addiction
and offers guidance to professionals
who work with children.
Because more than 90% of participants in the
program attend on scholarships, fundraising
to underwrite program operations is ongoing.
It is only because of the commitment of
our donors that we can firmly maintain our
goal that no child is ever turned away from
the program due to an inability to pay.
The national association for Children
of alcoholics reports that more than
28 million americans are children of
alcoholics or drug addicts! Children
of addicted parents are in the highest
risk group of children likely to
become alcohol and drug abusers,
due to both genetic and family
environment factors.
The goal of the Children’s Program is to in-
terrupt the generational cycle of addiction in
families – and in our communities!
on the following page, you will find a list
of donation opportunities to support the
Children’s program. every donation makes a
difference to children and families in need.
Changing Lives – One COmmunity at a time
it is aLL about the ChiLdren
reduCing risk, buiLding resiLienCe
One in three children in America lives in a
home where addiction to alcohol and other
drugs has a strong negative impact on his
or her development. Children growing up in
such an environment quickly develop defenses
of not talking about their situation,
expressing their feelings, or trusting those
around them.
They develop “holes
in their soul,” creating
an environment
of significantly higher
risk for perpetuating
the generational cycle
of addiction, as these
children confront adolescence
and pass into
adulthood. Conservatively stated, children
growing up in families where addiction is
present are two to three times more likely to
repeat the cycle when pressures mount.
With a generation of children who are growing
up “at risk,” the success of the Betty Ford
Children’s Program has prompted numerous
requests for services from other agencies,
professionals and programs around
More than 8.3 million
children live with at least
one parent who abuses
or is addicted to alcohol
or other drugs. (National
Household Survey on Drug
Abuse [NHSDA], 2007)
the country. Our response is the creation of
the Children’s Program Training Academy
(CPTA).
Under the leadership of Jerry Moe, Vice
President and National Director of the Betty
Ford Children’s Program, the CPTA will extend
the Children’s
Program philosophy
and core benefits to
new geographic areas,
additional service
providers and
educational partners.
The number of
families and children
touched through
the program will increase.
As local agencies are trained to
serve this neglected population, the impact
of the program will grow.
The CPTA will offer a range of services: (1) A
formal Training Academy Licensing Program
for agencies; (2) Individual Consultations;
(3) Enhancement Services; and, (4) Training
The CpTa is a national training resource for:
• Agencies who wish to develop a
community and/or culturally-specific
version of the Betty Ford Children’s
Program in their own service area;
• Clinicians and other caring professionals
wanting to strengthen their skills in
serving children and families hurt by
alcoholism and other drug addiction;
• Programs already serving this
vulnerable population who want to
deepen their effectiveness and ensure
their long-term viability.
Upon acceptance to the CPTA, the amount
needed for implementation to begin is the
cost to underwrite site development. Gifts of
The purpose of this program is simply to inform
people of the use, misuse and abuse of
alcohol and related mind-altering chemicals.
Millions of Americans drink alcohol in moderation
and never get intoxicated. Perhaps
20 million persons drink too much and have
the disease of alcoholism, but deny they need
help.
