We know that 23.5 million Americans abuse or are addicted to alcohol and
other drugs. It costs the nation $600 billion annually in lost productivity,
health and crime-related expenses. Alcoholics and addicts affect at least 4
other people. Worst of all, this disease destroys families.
In 1982, Betty Ford set out to change
the face of addiction by offering the
highest quality treatment in the most
compassionate setting. Services are
accessible to as many as possible,
especially other women facing this
disease! In her name, this challenge
continues.
As a not-for-profit that offers several
million dollars annually in financial
assistance and proudly underwrites a
unique Children’s Program and Medical
Education services, we want to answer
the question that many ask…

Changing Lives – One Patient at a time
Replenishing the Financial Assistance Fund remains the
highest priority for the Betty Ford Center Foundation.
It was Mrs. Ford’s personal mission to keep the Center
accessible to the greatest number of families. Without
this extra support, many people could not afford treatment
for addiction to alcohol and other drugs.
The Financial Assistance Fund at the Center provides
approximately $ 3 million annually in scholarships to
patients and family members. Each year, that means
that hundreds of families have access to programs of
hope and healing from the disease of addiction.
inPatient treatment
Designed for adults 18 and over seeking help for alcohol
and/or other drug addiction, the Inpatient Program provides
detoxification and primary treatment.

Pain management
The Pain Management Track serves chronic pain sufferers
who, as a consequence, have developed addictive
disease. The ultimate goal of the Pain Management
Track is to reduce patients’ chronic pain and improve
their ability to function and experience good mental
health.

The Intensive Outpatient Program is designed for individuals
18 years and older seeking primary treatment for
alcoholism and/or other drug addiction. This program
provides assessment and primary treatment services.

Designed to evaluate licensed professionals who may
have addictive disease, as well as other adults who
exhibit impaired behavior at home, work or school.

The role of an Attendant is vital to the healthcare of
patients. Attendant Services provide one-on-one care,
oversight, assistance and monitoring of a patient. This
may include providing assistance with ambulation and

Addiction is a family disease that causes suffering for
everyone who stands in its path. This program – open to
all – provides education on addiction, helps loved ones
identify issues they may have involving the disease, and

theraPeutiC afterCare
Therapeutic Aftercare is available to individuals 18 years
and older who have completed alcohol or other drug
treatment, and/or the Family Program, and feel there is
more to discover and uncover. Participants should have

continuing their recovery.

One of Mrs. Ford’s priorities at Betty Ford
Center was to meet the unique needs of
women undergoing treatment for addiction
to alcohol and other drugs. Because of her
beliefs, treatment at the Center is genderspecific,
to address the separate issues that
face women.
To honor Mrs. Ford’s vision, dedication and
ongoing efforts, the Betty Ford Legacy
Fund was established in January 2005. This
permanent and endowed fund generates
interest and investment income to provide a
perpetual source of financial assistance for
women seeking treatment at the Center.
40% of all alcoholics and addicts are women, yet women only
account for 25% of all people treated for chemical dependency!

ChiLdren’s Program
Changing Lives – One ChiLd at a time
Children are the most innocent victims to the
disease of addiction. Growing up in a home
where addiction is present, children learn to
adapt by following the “Don’t Talk,” “Don’t
Trust,” “Don’t Feel” attitude. In this way,
the problem carries on from generation to
generation.
The Betty Ford Children’s Program ad-
dresses the needs of children aged seven to
twelve who love someone who suffers from
addiction to alcohol or other drugs. Through
age-appropriate activities, children learn
that their parent’s disease is not their fault;
they are not alone; and, there is hope.
With ongoing support from donors to the
Children’s Program, we are able to bring the
program to children through schools and
community organizations. Additionally, by
offering community workshops and partnering
with like-minded organizations, the Children’s
Program raises awareness about addiction
and offers guidance to professionals
who work with children.
Because more than 90% of participants in the
program attend on scholarships, fundraising
to underwrite program operations is ongoing.
It is only because of the commitment of
our donors that we can firmly maintain our
goal that no child is ever turned away from
the program due to an inability to pay.
The national association for Children
of alcoholics reports that more than
28 million americans are children of
alcoholics or drug addicts! Children
of addicted parents are in the highest
risk group of children likely to
become alcohol and drug abusers,
due to both genetic and family
environment factors.
The goal of the Children’s Program is to in-
terrupt the generational cycle of addiction in
families – and in our communities!

One in three children in America lives in a
home where addiction to alcohol and other
drugs has a strong negative impact on his
or her development. Children growing up in
such an environment quickly develop defenses
of not talking about their situation,
expressing their feelings, or trusting those
around them.
They develop “holes
in their soul,” creating
an environment
of significantly higher
risk for perpetuating
the generational cycle
of addiction, as these
children confront adolescence
and pass into
adulthood. Conservatively stated, children
growing up in families where addiction is
present are two to three times more likely to
repeat the cycle when pressures mount.
With a generation of children who are growing
up “at risk,” the success of the Betty Ford
Children’s Program has prompted numerous
requests for services from other agencies,
professionals and programs around

the opportunity to spend five days experi-
encing what it is like to be a patient or a fam-
ily member at Betty Ford Center.
Along with extensive interaction with
patients in treatment and family members
in the Family Program, participants attend
lectures that address the medical needs of
addicted patients, recovery
skills and the
theory and philosophy of
treatment at Betty Ford
Center. They also attend
a Treatment Planning
Update (TPU) meeting to
observe the multidisciplinary
care process at the Center. Supplementing
this experience with the education
provided by Betty Ford Center physicians
and treatment experts gives participants
a comprehensive perspective on addiction
treatment and recovery, as implemented
through the 12-step model.
For professionals working with children, a
specialized education program is available.
Participants will experience a behind-thescenes
look at the Betty Ford Children’s
Program. During the four-day process, they
will more clearly understand how children
