CAPÍTULO 7 Infraestructura para ciclistas en la Ciudad de México La existencia de infraestructura para ciclistas, en la Ciudad de México como en cualquier ciudad del mundo, es una más de las medidas tendientes al mejoramiento de la movilidad urbana en su sentido más amplio. 1. Si bien en la ciudad no hay todavía muchos ejemplos de diseños viales especiales para la bicicleta, resulta importante explicar qué tipos de infraestructura hay y cómo circular en ella. La separación física de las bicicletas y los coches lleva a una mayor percepción de seguridad, en especial en los ciclistas inexpertos. Generalmente, empero, esa percepción es falsa. Múltiples estudios establecen que si bien algunos accidentes se reducen, aumentan las colisiones con peatones y los accidentes en las intersecciones. Esto sucede porque el ciclista no puede posicionarse de manera adecuada ya que se encuentra confinada su trayectoria. Nunca olvides que en las intersecciones debes buscar siempre la posición primaria (ver capítulo 3), lo cual es imposible si la infraestructura confinada mantiene al ciclista en una posición secundaria obligada, alejada de la vista del resto de los conductores. LA INFRAESTRUCTURA CICLISTA SE PUEDE CATALOGAR EN DOS GRANDES GRUPOS: LA EXCLUSIVA PARA CICLISTAS Y LA COMPARTIDA CON OTROS VEHÍCULOS. EL REGLAMENTO DE TRÁNSITO METROPOLITANO ESTABLECE, EN EL ARTÍCULO 4°, LA DEFINICIÓN DE LAS CICLOVÍAS, LOS CICLOCARRILES, ZONAS DE TRÁNSITO LOCAL O CALMADO, Y ÁREAS DE ESPERA CICLISTA (VER CAPÍTULO 5). 98 MANUAL DEL CICLISTA DE LA CIUDAD DE MÉXICO Ningún automovilista busca accidentarse contra un ciclista. La mayoría de los accidentes en intersecciones se presentan por falta de visibilidad. • Es un error pensar que la infraestructura especial para ciclistas es una opción más segura que el uso de la calle. • No te confies por ir en un en un espacio señalizado para circulación de bicicletas. Recuerda que tu seguridad depende de ti; aplica lo aprendido en este manual y mejora tu capacidad de analizar en cada situación qué es seguro y qué resulta peligroso.
