El viaje a la ciudad / The trip to the city
hondonadas, valles, aire puro, firmamento despejado y horizontes
abiertos.
Descending on a wide, smooth road, with “fondas” and restaurants on both
sides, the landscape offers a view surrounded by mountains, hollows, valleys,
fresh air, a clear sky and open horizons. The traveler begins to descend toward
the municipality of San Jeronimo which emerges in the distance as a white light
from the surrounding vegetation and shortly it vanishes on the side. The typical
warm weather from this zone is more noticeable now.
The trip starts with the mild weather of the city of Medellin and from the “Terminal
del Norte” (the North Bus Terminal), which offers several alternatives for public
trasportation. The trip continues on the way up the “Carretera al Mar” (the
“roadway to the sea”) passing through the highly populated neighborhood of
Robledo and the San Cristóbal subdivision, soon reaching the “Fernando Gómez
Martínez Tunnel”, 4.6 km/2.9 mi long. This is the longest and most modern
tunnel in Latin America. It was awarded the 2007 National Engineering Prize.
A little further away, the natural geographical triangle, which is formed by the
Tonusco and Cauca rivers, framing the town of Antioquia, can be seen next to the
foothill of the Cerro de Buriticá.
A few kilometers away, following the course of the “Aurra” river which flows
along until it merges into the Cauca River, you arrive at the entry of the town
of Sopetrán, on the right. Soon after, you reach The Cauca River along with
the 308-meter-long fixed bridge made of concrete and metal, which was built
by an engineer, named, Juan de Dios Higuita, and inaugurated in 1962. There
you can see, the merging of the Tonusco River into the Cauca, and nearby, the
bridge crossing over the Tonusco, which was inaugurated in 1974 opening
the passage towards Anzá and the deparment’s southeast.
The bridge crossing over the Cauca river connects Sopetran and Santa Fe de
Antioquia. The area has been called “El Paso Real” since long ago.
Entrada a la ciudad / Entrance to the city
destacan hoteles, hosterías, estaderos, haciendas y casa fincas bordeadas
A short way leads to the town’s urban focal point. Hotels, hostels, inns,
haciendas and farms surrounded by trees that spread their branches and
create a visual illusion of a prolonged sequence of arches, are all seen along
the road. Even a variety of fruit trees can be admired such as: Mango trees,
orange trees, coconut palms and breadfruit trees.
The Puente de la Acequia del Llano is found near the
city. It has a colonial structure and was originally without
whitewashed stucco.
[[
Its construction was ordered by Judge/Governor Juan Antonio Mon y
Velarde y Cienfuegos (1785-1788) in the old road of “Paso Real” over the
“Gualí” River, a derivation of the Tonusco River. In 2003, the H. municipal
council declared it “cultural heritage of the city”.
The short steep slope ends in a “fork”. To the left, is 9th Street which
ventures to the downtown area through the neighborhood of Santa Lucia.
To the right, is the road to the Carretera al Mar, that leads you to the bus
terminal and the Plaza de Mercado Cubierta.
venido a llamársele únicamente San Jerónimo.
time went on, its name was shortened to San Jerónimo. On
December 31st, 1757, it was given the category of “Partido” (an
Later on in the second half of the XX century, the country houses
occupied the surroundings of the urban area. Tourism has
