VZT. ¿Por qué el interés por la historia de México? Entrevista al Dr. <strong>Paul</strong> <strong>Garner</strong> (PG) Realizada por la Dra Verónica Zárate Toscano Querétaro, México, 27 de octubre de 2010 PG. Eso es una larga historia, bueno, hay varias versiones, ¿quieres la versión corta o la versión larga? VZT. La que tú quieras. PG. Yo estudiaba Lengua y Letras Hispánicas y cuando se estudia una carrera de Lenguas en <strong>Inglaterra</strong>, implica pasar un año en el extranjero. Y como yo había vivido en España, quería ir a otra parte del mundo hispanoparlante. Lo curioso es que tuve que pedir permiso a mi universidad para hacerlo. Vine a México, pasé un año en el CEPE,1 estudiaba cursos de historia de México. Hice una tesina sobre la revolución en Chihuahua, entonces ya empecé con la historia de México y, terminando la carrera, busqué una beca para un doctorado. Vacilaba entre historia de España, sobre todo siglo XX, ya que una especialidad de los británicos es la historia de la guerra civil española; hay un grupo muy nutrido de historiadores británicos. Otra opción era la versión cubana, que tuvo un impacto muy fuerte en todas las academias en el occidente. Pero opté por la Revolución Mexicana y empecé el doctorado en Historia. Mi tema fue la Revolución en Oaxaca.2 Fueron varios años, con una acumulación de intereses. VZT. ¿Y te interesaba Oaxaca por la cuestión agraria? PG. Oaxaca, en realidad, porque que estaba muy de moda en los años 70 la historia regional entre los historiadores de la Revolución. Revisé estos trabajos y buscaba un estado que no se hubiera estudiado. Además, yo conocía Oaxaca y me parecía mucho más interesante que los estados del norte, por su diversidad cultural. VZT. El lugar te atrajo y de ahí te atrajeron los problemas. PG. Sí, una problemática obviamente especial en la historiografía de la Revolución, una de las regiones más marginadas del centro que no estaba en el meollo de la Revolución, fueron para mí las más interesantes.
