New York, NY- As the Senate continues debate on a comprehensive bi-partisan immigration reform bill, the House Judiciary Committee considered a draconian bill known as the “SAFE Act”, sponsored by Rep. Tray Gowdy (R-SC). The bill seeks to dramatically increase detentions and deportations and would create a brutal environment of rampant racial profiling without fixing the immigration system’s fundamental problems. Today’s markup hearing was interrupted by an outcry from dozens of immigrant rights advocates, including New York Immigration Coalition Executive Director Chung-Wha Hong, who spilled out into the hallways of the hearing room, chanting, “Shame! Shame! Shame! Stop the pain!” The bill being considered today is yet another example of an enforcement-only approach that serves no constructive purpose; it also reflects the kind of partisan division that marked the last several years in DC—and which the Senate, at least, has moved beyond. Earlier this month, the House voted (largely along party lines) to pass an amendment offered by Steve King (R-IA) that would limit prosecutorial discretion and essentially eliminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. (DACA grants temporary relief from deportation and work authorization to certain young people who came to the U.S. as children.) That amendment has little chance of passing the Senate. The following is a statement from Chung-Wha Hong, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition: “Unlike the comprehensive immigration bill being considered by the Senate, the SAFE Act focuses only on draconian enforcement measures that would criminalize millions of undocumented immigrants in the United States. We are dismayed that some members of the House Judiciary Committee would attempt to move forward with such a heavy-handed and irresponsible piece of legislation, one that stands in very stark contrast to the bipartisan
