Evaluation of a Gmelina arborea clonal test in Siquirres, Limón

In this thesis work it will be presented the results of an evaluation of a melina clonal test,
established in june 2010 in Florida, Siquirres, Limón, Costa Rica (property of Bienes J y J del
Atlántico S.A.), by ASIREA, a NGO and active member of GENFORES (tree improvement
cooperative of Costa Rica). The study comprehends the evaluation of 25 melina clones at 18
months of age, based on quantitative as well as qualitative traits. After the usage of SELEGEN
software for quantitative genetics analysis, it was determined that in commercial volume,
clone 58 was the best ranked, meanwhile, clone 20 was positioned in the second worst
position, over the control entrie (improved seed donated by CATIE). In the qualitative trait
analysis, best ranked clone was 12 and clone 26 as the second worst, again, followed by the
same control test seed produced in a seed orchard in CATIE, as the worst ranked material.
