Por los campos de lava
“Economy vs
Nature” collection
The seventh book in the series, Por los campos de lava.
Relatos de una expedición científica a Lanzarote y a las Isletas
canarias. Descripción e historia geológica (1907-1908) [Along
the lava fields. Tales of a scientific expedition to the Canary
Isles. Description and geological history (1907-1908)], by
Eduardo Hernández-Pacheco, was published in 2002.
Eduardo Hernández-Pacheco (1872-1965) took his degree in
science from the Faculty of Science of the Central University
of Madrid. In 1907 he was recruited by the National Museum
of Natural Science in Madrid, where he participated actively in
the Spanish Royal Society of Natural History and held the
position of Head Division Officer of Geology and
Palaeontology. Pedro Laín Entralgo included him in the
“Generation of ‘98” for his interest in exploring the
peculiarities of Spanish wildlife.
geológica (1907-1908) [Along the lava fields. Tales of a
scientific expedition to the Canary Isles. Description and
geological history (1907-1908)], reproduces the full original
text – unpublished to date – that Eduardo Hernández-Pacheco
wrote in Madrid on his return from a geological campaign to
Lanzarote in 1907.
The FCM created this collection in 2002 to bring two
apparently widely divergent disciplines, economics and
nature science, into closer harmony. The first book
published under this series was Situación diferencial de los
recursos naturales españoles [Differential status of Spanish
natural resources], co-edited by José Manuel Naredo and
Fernando Parra.
The purpose of the collection entails a dual approach: to draw
attention, firstly, to relevant reflections made by authors who
sought this connection long ago but whose writings, not duly
valued by the contemporary scientific community, went published
and have, therefore, been inaccessible up to now to readers
interested in these subjects; and secondly, to publish recent
works whose cross-disciplinary nature likewise aims to overcome
the conventional divorce between developments in economics on
the one hand and nature science on the other, and to formulate
operational methodologies in keeping with this objective.
